Ready, Set, GO!

Tuesday, June 14, 2011

Alrightie, then! It's 4 freakin' thirty in the a.m. and we're leaving for the hospital in about 15 minutes. My blood pressure pills are stuck somewhere between my mouth & stomach ("take with a sip of water" hah!), I've had my 2nd shower with surgical scrub with no lotion allowed after and my skin is shriveling as we speak. I have a small headache--equal parts sleep deprivation and caffiene withdrawl. Guess I'm ready!

I'm not sure when I'll be able to be personally in touch as they don't want any valuables like laptop or cell phone at the hospital. I will, of course, ask Thomas to smuggle them in anyway. If he calls you with an update, feel free to pass the news to anyone who's interested. I think he'll burn out on calling pretty quickly. He's way more stressed than I am.

Thanks to everyone for being SO supportive the last 6 months. I'll be back...

Getting Ready

Friday, June 10, 2011

Whew! Today was my last day at work before surgery. I have remote access so will do paperwork from home Friday & Monday to save 2 days of leave, but won't be back to real live work until AUGUST! Lots of well-wishes from co-workers. Enough that it made it difficult to get all my tasks done in the time I had left. As problems go, not a bad one to have.

I got my hair cut--told her to cut my bangs a bit short as it would be a while before I could come back. She misunderstood & cut about 3" off the bottom too. Oh well, now I don't have to worry about whether I'm too old for a ponytail :-) After that we went to the Sears Outlet store & plunked down a grand for a new fridge to be delivered Monday. I'm just happy that will be taken care of before surgery, although would have been better to have it in before company comes tomorrow. Until Monday all we have is a 2 cubic foot fridge that is destined for my office when I go back.

Tomorrow is work from home then daughter's college graduation (version 1) in the afternoon. Saturday we are chauffering my brother & sis-in-law to graduation (version 2). I'm not going to that one as there is no way I could tolerate the crowds going in, sitting in Husky Stadium for 4 hours, then the crowds out. So we're going to drop them off & go find something else to do for 4 hours, then retrieve them plus the graduate, meet her twin at work & all go out for dinner. At which I plan to completely ignore calories and sodium content. I'm going to get whatever sounds good--I know after surgery nothing will be appealing for a while. And all the while marvel at the concept that someone I gave birth to (yesterday, wasn't it?) is a college graduate!

P.S. No, I'm not nervous about surgery. I am, however, increasingly intolerant of my damned hip the closer I get to the big day.

Wow, best of luck and remember to relax - I know me, when I work from home I'm very productive... but sounds like you need rest. Congrats on your daughters graduation - have a good time, but remember to relax!

Not enough hours in the day

Thursday, June 02, 2011

I had great intentions of tracking all my food again, posting on the boards, etc. I have lost 2 lbs since breaking the plateau so am obviously doing something right, but haven't had time to Spark much.

Getting ready for my hip replacement is becoming time consuming and life keeps throwing extra stuff at me. I'm trying to get things in order at work but today learned I have to do something like 28 patient assessments, double what I had last month with less than 1/2 the time. Trying to get my last 2 MS clients squared away so can close their files before I go to hospital but doctors & others are being slow to respond with things I need to finish. I have an hour drive to the anemia clinic weekly & have to fit in visits to primary doc, dentist, etc.

Worst of all, my poor daughter is on DAY 8 of a migraine! She's a high school Junior/college Freshman & they did a demonstration in class of inducing the mammalian dive reflex. The idea was to hold their breath while putting face into very cold water. (This slows heart rate & raises blood pressure.) They told kids not to do it if they had heart problems but failed to mention that it commonly causes headache. And because it's a college program, no notice to parents. Also no response to my complaint, other than to tell my daughter she "should have listened to her body" better.

Poor kid has never had a migraine before but there's a strong family history. If I'd known I probably would have told her to pass. Anyway, once the migraine started it refused to stop. She's been to the doctor 3 times & has had muscle relaxers, Imitrex, narcotics and a CAT scan so far. She's currently on Percocet to keep the pain tolerable while we wait to see if Elavil will control the migraine. Oh, did I mention it's finals week?

She's better today (pain 5 out of 10 when pain meds wear off instead of 8-9 when it started). But of course I'll worry until she's all better. And because I'll be in the hospital, will have to trust my ex to follow up on this. He SUCKS at anything medical. Really. I could tell you stories.

Anyway, it's almost midnight. I need to get up early to drive daughter to school (she's a trooper) so bed would probably be a good idea about now... Back at it tomorrow...

Hope the daughter gets rid of the migraine. The only time I have ever had UTIs was during finals weeks. Definitely high pressure time.

Good luck on the hip replacement too.

The migraine may be hanging on because of the stress level your daughter is under--finals week in college is ALWAYS a headache, though not usually literally!...

You may want to consider something a little out of the ordinary, like acupuncture or meditation techniques to try and control the pain. I use meditation regularly for my fibromyalgia issues (a chronic pain disease) and though I've been slacking off a bit, I'm renewing my efforts as I too am going through some additional horrendous medical scheduling issues right now. (hand surgery, ischemia problem, had surgery a week ago last Monday... blah blah blah! LOL)

I totally get it! LOL

You will make it through all this though, you know that. Just post when you can, and know that SP is here waiting whenever you need it--as are your team mates...

Kathy emoticonfor you AND your daughter... emoticon

Pepsi Bad!

Monday, May 30, 2011

Last time I drank Pepsi I craved carbs for 3 days & swore never to drink it again. Saturday hubby & I went to see the Lipizzaner Stallions & I decided to treat myself to: a Pepsi. It was large, cold, and I drank most of it. And once again, craving carbs.

So, experiment replicated and confirmed. No more Pepsi for me. Really. I mean it this time!

Got to spend Sunday with Daughter #1, which rarely happens as she's so busy. Very nice. Youngest daughter is under the weather, brining universe into balance...

Nope. When it comes to Pepsi I have no self control and need to just stay away. Oddly, I can drink ginger ale (love the new green tea ginger ale) or other soda and not crave it the next day. I've been a Pepsi-holic since my 20's & everytime I "just have one" it ends up out of control. Starting to wonder if they put the same addictive stuff in it that is supposed to be added to cigarettes to get you hooked!

I think that once in a while is ok, don't you? I was craving pop last night too, after eating Chinese food (salty I guess), so I had a ginger ale, and it was amazing.
