Words of Wisdom from Wade Kinsella

Friday, February 01, 2013

Hello my fellow Sparkers,

I recently discovered the joy of the "Hart of Dixie" and have a bit of a cougar crush on Wade. Actually, I love all the characters and all their flaws. In season 2, episode 3 - "If it makes you happy", what Wade delivers a spiel about happiness really hit home for me. In ONE MINUTE, he says volumes. To the writer of Wade's character, I can only say WOW and THANKS!

I am GUILTY of "always looking over your (my) shoulder wondering what life should be, instead of taking it for what it is" and thereby wasting the PRESENT analyzing the past.

And, my life "doesn't match up with the picture in your (my) head about what your (my) life should be" aka who I AM is not who I think I should be and/or want to be. Waa, waa, waa....poor me? NOT. Who I am I have chosen to be through the CHOICES I've made. My CHOICES make me who I am.

"You wanna be happy doc (insert Julie), CHANGE YOUR LIFE or CHANGE YOUR PICTURE."

"Be HONEST about what makes you HAPPY", because "Who doesn't wanna be happy?"

Stop beating myself up about the choices I've made, but resolve to make BETTER choices. I can only aspire to be the BEST version of me.

Here's a youtube link with the "happiness spiel" I'm talkin' about (2:35) ~

Enjoy and be SPARKTACULAR one CHOICE at a time!

How to survive a 6 day POWER OUTAGE in style ;o)

Sunday, July 08, 2012

Dear Sparkies,

I'm back! Our power went out Friday, June 29th and was recently restored on Thursday, July 5th. Oh, what a relief it is! ;o) Below is my POWER OUTAGE story.

The POWER OUTAGE was a trip and all I can say is..."I'll get by with a little help from my friends"...do you know this song? My neighbors are amazing! We suffered through together and even managed to have FUN. The night of the event, Friday (6/29) evening, we gathered 3 doors down for drinks and merriment after surveying the wreckage left by the derecho - now there's a new one for you! It took down MANY trees in our well-established (circa 1920s) wooded urban neighborhood including a HUGE ASH in my immediate neighbor's yard. Thankfully, their wonderful tree house was spared.

Saturday, my friend let us take advantage of their RV "The Chateau" which is parked for the summer at an RV campground. Not only does their RV have A/C, the campground has a beautiful POOL. Day #1 of the 2012 POWER OUTAGE, we were feeling no pain at The Chateau. We had our most perishable items in coolers and were hanging out poolside.

Sunday it was Dads to the rescue. My neighbor's Dad drove up from Cincinnati, Ohio to bring her a generator and my Dad brought us a generator too. My Dad's the best Boy Scout ever - ALWAYS PREPARED! Thank goodness!

Well, the generator worked great at first. We used it to power our frig, basement freezer and some fans, but as the week wore on, it decided to sputter, cough and backfire completely stressing my husband out. Not good. Stress + HEAT = one cranky husband. That and losing the man -vs- machine battle. Yep, on the 4th of July, we totally succumbed to the POWER OUTAGE. We turned off the generator and COMPLETELY unloaded the frig and freezer - mind you this is after we were feeling confident and had just restocked the frig. Aack! Fortunately, my hubby's co-worker and friend had just bought an upright freezer and invited us to house our frozen (slightly thawed) items at his house. Our refrigerator items were swiftly stashed in coolers until our neighbors offered to plug in their extra basement frig into their generator. I'm tellin' ya great people live on my street! In addition to storing our perishables, they also invited us to stay in their newly finished basement. We spent two nights at their house.

On the 4th, most of our neighbors' power was restored. Not ours. :o( It was okay though because they offered us the use of their generator. Thursday, through good fan/blind management, I was able to keep our house a balmy 85 while it was 103 outside. I have a picture to prove it.

Don't under estimate the value of extension cords! Things to be grateful for during a SUMMER (multiple days in the 90s-100+) POWER OUTAGE - ICE (a precious commodity), SHADE, GAS STOVE, GAS GRILL, RUNNING WATER, SPRINKLERS, SQUIRT GUNS, WATER BALLOONS, HAND-HELD MISTERS, FLASHLIGHTS with GOOD BATTERIES, a good 'ole RADIO, CELL PHONES, the A/C in your car...what else? AIR MATTRESSES for sleeping on the 1st floor of a two story house. FINISHED BASEMENTS (we don't have one, but our neighbors do). GATORADE. JAR CANDLES (I keep one in every room of the house). Our block even managed a 4th of the July Potluck and backyard Pyrofest. ;o)

Thursday, HOPE turned into POSSIBILITY as chainsaws were heard and bucket trucks were seen over the fence (the BIG ASH fell in our neighbor's yard). Chainsaws were music to my ears and men wearing hard hats with reflective vests from KY were looking downright sexy! ;o) By 5:11pm, we were reconnected to the grid. At 6:04pm, the A/C was ON! Oh HAPPY DAY!

And, that my friends is how I survived the POWER OUTAGE. Did I mention I'm a CAMPER? :o) Camping at home is pretty luxurious. :o)

Stay COOL and don't take that A/C for granted or your neighbors!

Best wishes to all,
Julie :o)

This power outage is crazy. In 2012 we can't get power back within a few days? We went without power for 24 hours and it sucked, but I can't IMAGINE 7 days. Glad you had a 'fallback' plan.

Wow.....you handled that all with such a great attitude. I would have been MISERABLE. Plus, it is great to hear that wonderful, caring people do still exist out there.

That's great.(Not that you lost power, but that you found so many ways to deal with the inconvenience). So many people just thought it was the end of the world. They tend to forget what it's like to "rough it" or how did people survive in the "old days". Glad to hear you made the best of it. emoticon. Stay cool and enjoy your Sunday!!

A Perfect Day :o)

Saturday, June 02, 2012

Hello Sparkies,

Today was a perfect day! I reconnected with my family and my bicycle. My son and I rode to a local diner for breakfast and took the scenic route home and were lucky enough to see a fox (in the city)! Next, my family went strawberry picking. Yum! And, finally, we pedaled 7+ miles at a local metropark. This may not seem like much but when you factor in fierce headwinds and a 5 yr old. It was an awesome family outing!

I'm a happy nature girl, mom and Sparker! I know I'm going to sleep well tonight after all the fresh air and exercise. Yippee! My BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT of the day was TURNING OFF THE TV and setting my family FREE! This Mom's taking a stand on "screen time" this summer. I'll not have my kids sitting in front of the TV and the computer this summer. No way, no how! I also need to set some rules for myself as well. Too often, time flies as I sit in front of my laptop.

Sweet dreams Sparkies!

Yours truly,
Julie :o)

Indygirl's words of wisdom: (Indyisms) Quotes by Beth Donovan

Don't wait to be thin to act thin. Life is happening now, not 10 pounds from now. ~Indygirl

D.A.S. Dress the part. Act the part. Suck it up. ~Indygirl (my first mantra)

Aim for better every day, never perfect right away. ~Indygirl

I remember giving up my choices. That's actually what living an unhealthy life is about. ~Indygirl

If you got a traffic ticket would you break every traffic law the rest of the day? Then why toss the whole day over a slice of pizza? ~Indygirl (first spoken by me at the 2009 Spark Your Life convention)

One slice of pizza is always going to have less calories than two. ~Indygirl

Never treat your body like a garbage disposal for leftovers. ~Indygirl

If you think 'I may as well', then change it to 'I may as well not'. ~Indygirl

Lose, maintain, just don't gain. ~Indygirl

Tea and sympathy, not cake and apathy. ~Indygirl

Baby steps. Leaping in wears you out. Then you quit. ~Indygirl

You don't have to be perfect you just have to stick with it. ~Indygirl

Dream big, step small, and keep going. ~Indygirl

Look at weight regain like a bad haircut, it's temporary and will fix itself with proper care and maintenance. ~Indygirl

That which I cannot do now is my aspiration, not my defeat. ~Indygirl

Don't put your thoughts toward what might have been, put your energy into what is possible. ~Indygirl

Having a bad day is like getting a flat tire. You fix it and get back on the road; you don't have a tantrum & go around popping holes in the other 3 tires! ~Indygirl

When you make a wrong turn on the road, your GPS does not go berserk, berate you and drive you off a cliff. It calmly tells you to get back on track. ~Indygirl

Plateaus only SEEM to last forever, but if you kick and stomp and go at them, they crash to the ground and you can dance on their dirt! ~Indygirl

Find your inner CAUSE that requires a higher fitness level. THAT will be your rock. ~Indygirl

The point is that there is always something you can do if you think out of the box. In fact, throw the box away. ~Indygirl

Don't binge on something just to keep yourself from binging on it later or to get it out of the house. That's silly. ~Indygirl (guilty of it)

I lost my weight choice by choice. ~Indygirl

Remember to fill your life, not your stomach. ~Indygirl

Get healthy and fit like it's your career. ~Indygirl

Forget what negative/ energy drainers say and go the other way. ~Indygirl

Eat right, not light. ~Indygirl

Push yourself gently in the right direction, but don't push so hard that you push yourself down. ~Indygirl

Change your life and you change your weight, not the other way around. ~Indygirl

To get fat unglued, eat healthier food. ~Indygirl

Hello Sparkies,

It's a new year! I have a new calendar! And, I'm ready to get moving again!

GOAL #1: Lose 6 lbs by 1/27/12.

Time to bundle up and bust a move! ;o)

Best wishes to all as we start anew!
