My granddaughter starts kindergarten next week. They grow up to fast! The beauty of your son's look is that one of these days he will thank you for the love and the care! I was 22 when I told my parents that...and I WAS a dumba**! I love when parents care. Good job, Mom!

Bethany's 11th Birthday * Monster High * lots of pics

Saturday, July 30, 2011

Ok, here's several pictures of my daughter's 11th Birthday Party... this year is Monster High Themed sleepover... This is what has kept me busy this weekend!

It's not every daughter who is thrilled with getting a coffin for her birthday! LOL! My daughter got two! the Draculaura bed and the Monster High iCoffin. :)

I did the cake... the topper Bethany picked out. It's Draculaura's pet bat Count Fabulous... he's always grumpy cause he's a boy and Draculaura like to dress him like a girl. :) Bethany also picked the colors and helped me do a lot. She has had a blast this weekend!

It didn't do much for my diet, tho. :/ Oh well, putting the wagon in park for a bit isn't quite the same as falling off of it. ;)

I must confess that I too like the Monster High dolls... I kinda wish they had all that cool stuff when I was younger :) Although, I did have Popples and Pound Puppies, so it wasn't too rough. Awesome job on the cake!!!

Wow! You did that cake?! That's really, really good!

And I like how, even though it's a coffin with a kind of scary motif, it's not all gothic. It's girly! :)

Nearly back to normal.

Sunday, July 17, 2011

Hello everyone! First of all let me thank all of you who have posted on my previous blogs, offered prayers, well wishes and good vibes for all that was going on. You are a wonderful group of people and I appreciate every word of encouragement!

Wonderful news... Melanie is pretty much back to NORMAL (hehehe, whatever that is!) Her pain level is continually just a one or two (on a 1-10 scale) and it just keeps getting better. She can shop, go out to eat, swim, etc... as long as it's not for too long at one time. My prayers have been answered!

For those of you who don't know what she had done, here's the scoop.... She had spinal fusion surgery to correct her scoliosis curve and to prevent it from getting worse. She was diagnosed with scoliosis at the end of the 5th grade. Wore two types of braces 24/7 and was told when she was 15 that she was finished growing, the braces had done what they could do and continuing to wear them wouldn't help. Her next check up appt. was a year later, where we found out the curve was getting worse. 3 months later, surgery was recommended. We were heart broken. After so many years in the braces which were a traumatic and emotional phase (bad enough to be a pre-teen/teen and all the emotional angst that goes along with that... she had the braces to deal with but she did it through pain, tears, aggravation and acceptance)

So she had the surgery done. I don't know her curve measurement prior to the surgery... somewhere in the 50 to 60 degree range, I just don't remember, (but will find out at next appt (update... doc said it was 60 degrees)) It was a rough first couple of weeks, (she stood up the second day and was walking with help by the third) and smoother weeks since and here we are... doing great... this is Melanie with one of our fat cats, Neo. :)

This is before xray:

and here is the after:

a tremendous difference!

We are truly blessed!!!!

    Oh! I'm so glad she's better. :)

A friend of mine's daughter has just enough of a curve in her spine to cause her pain. Her momma is looking into options. The girl may be too old for the braces to work well (something about the growth plate being done?), and she is a really good dancer, so they're naturally concerned. I'll ask my friend if anyone has said anything about surgery yet. They just recently were closing the door on the brace. :/

Ah yes the teen years with wearing a back brace, not fun, but in some ways I'm sure made her stronger and yet more compassionate towards others. She got through it and got through the surgery and the worst part of recovery, Woo Hoo, so now she knows that she is tough stuff and can make through anything!!! LOL! Seriously though, I'm so glad that she had the surgery and is doing well!!! If she ever has any doubt as to why she had to go through that, I'll talk to her and let her know how much better her life is because of the surgery! Keep taking great care of her and of yourself!

What a hard road for your daughter-first the braces, and then the surgery. I am so glad she is doing better. It sounds like she is getting better each day. From the improvement in the after, this can only be a good thing for her. So glad she is back to normal!

WOW! That is a BIG curve! My grandma has scoliosis and never opted for surgery now she lives her life on pain killers and just basic day to day activities are hurtful to her. It is so hard to watch. I am so glad that her surgery went good and that she's up and moving around more. What a relief that must be for you.

Good to "see" you back and know that I will keep her (((and you))) in my thoughts!

Hang in there lady!!

Home is good.

Tuesday, June 21, 2011

We were able to come home Saturday night and home is very good. Melanie is continually improving. She can sit in a chair and walk around pretty well now. But just not for long periods of time at once. (and I still pretty much follow her around to make sure of her footing... don't want any falls!) Getting up and lying down is still a little hard. Nights are hard, too, and she wakes up occasionally hurting a LOT. But I'm there with her meds on a regular schedule... just sometimes she needs the larger dose and sometimes the smaller. Still a long way to go to "normal" but everything is looking well. She has been a very awesome and strong young lady through all this.

Glad to hear Melanie is recovering. Was her surgery Back surgery? I get that impression from her recovery. If so, was it for discs or a fusion or both? I hope I am not being too nosey, I just noted , you joined our team of people with SpinalFusions and I didn't know if it was you who had the surgery or Melanie or have you both?

She sounds as if she is doing well aand just do your best to stay ahead of the pain so it is easier to keep in control.

Tell Melanie that regerdless of the type of surgery, she has a lot of well wishers out here at SP.

Thanks for the update.

Thanks for the update! That is so good to hear that all went well! Now the pain, yes, it is horrible! Keep as comfortable as possible! I bet you have learned how to line up the pillows already. My DH bought extra pillows to have at home too. Getting up for the first time is the worst! But each time will get a little bit better. She will pull through this! I know this has to be hard on you as a mom to watch and not be able to take the pain away. Just remember that this will improve her life, just something that she had to go through. God has different plans and paths for each of us.

Glad she has come through the surgery. Do stay ahead of the pain. Make sure everyone who touches her washes their hands. They will not be surprised if you ask if they have washed them. Keeping infection away is the biggest issue to recovery.

Take care to you and your family.
