June 2014 review

Monday, June 30, 2014

June has been a big disappointment for me diet and weight wise... It was a month of a good day offset by many bad days and so on. It was also so full of stress as it came to a close, that I nearly just let myself fall into all my old habits. Luckily, that is already all better.

While my weight has not changed much this month, my fitness has. I started walking a mile per day on June 10th because a friend kind-of challenged me to, very simply, and I rose to meet it. (thank you, sweetie!! I owe this mile per day streak to you!) I walked a mile on my treadmill that evening, and I have been walking a mile on my treadmill every evening since then. I can't say it's helped with my weight (or maybe it has considering how many bad eating days I've had and still didn't gain 10 lbs!) what it has done for me shows up in the simple feat of being able to trudge flights of stairs and not feel like I have to sit down to catch my breath at the top. I always take the stairs anyhow... but I always got winded, too.

Many of you know I work on the second floor of our courthouse and that ascending those stairs with ease has been a goal of mine... well, I'm there. 3 weeks of breathing heavy on the treadmill has left me breathing easy on the stairs. This weekend we moved my son from his second floor apartment back home. I logged 17 flights of stairs on my fitbit that day in less than an hour (to my understanding, fitbit only counts flights going up, not down) and realized about halfway through that I wasn't winded. Wow. That rocks.

So while June was a bust weight wise... it's a win fitness wise. :)

I regained 10 pounds about 9 months ago-since then I have been at a plateau. It is the NSV's that have gotten me through too.

Are you ready to increase your walking challenge to 1.25 miles per day? If you haven't already, check out the free site walking4fun.com You log your steps and walk trails found all around the U.S., France, and Spain. You get to look at photos of where you are (and have walked past) Right now, a bunch of us are on the Long Trail in Vermont.

Exercising, Consistency, Accountability

Thursday, June 12, 2014

Aloha Sparklers! :)

This little blog is to share with y'all something I'm kinda proud of... I hope I'm not jinxing myself by sharing this, and I hope this makes me, all the more, to get with it on a daily basis...

For anyone who knows me, even a little bit, you KNOW what a helluva time I have with exercising. I admit, I have a lazy streak. I wear my fitbit almost always (I do forget sometimes) and it enters my daily fitness minutes... and I do try to walk a little more, climb the stairs a little more often, etc... but as for ON PURPOSE workouts... nope. I just don't do them... until...

A good friend of mine kind of issued an informal challenge on June 10th to put on a movie and walk while I watched it... So... I did it that night. I actually removed the clothes and box of junk hanging and sitting on my treadmill, wiped off the dust and proceeded to walk 1.5 miles on it. Wow, I felt great! I actually did an ON PURPOSE Workout. :) So... the night of June 11th (last night) I told myself that I had accomplished the STARTING... what was I going to do with that? Let it just be a one time thing or let it be the beginning of actually establishing that new habit I keep saying over and over I want to establish... So... I got on it again. This time I walked 1 mile. I am slow on it... I've been just walking at 2.5 mph, but it's a beginning.

I used to keep most of my exercising to myself just in case I messed up. That way I'd have no one to answer to but myself... but... now I'm sharing this with y'all so that not only do y'all know I've actually started this, but I also need consistency and accountability.

I know I've only done this 2 days in a row... but I'm planning on turning this into weeks, months, years in a row. :) It's the very beginning of my dream to make exercise a wonderful habit I love.

But I an happy for you. Start out slow so you don't burn yourself out. Increase it slowly each day. Rest a day if you feel tired or sore. emoticon Drink your water! emoticon

    What a great start!

I used to do the same thing....we had a TV in our bedroom and that's where the treadmill lived, too so I'd get on and walk for a mile or two while I watched a DVD. Then, I'd stop the DVD and it would force to me get back on the treadmill so that I could finish watching the movie!

Now, (even though I don't have a treadmill), if it's raining outside I will start a show on Amazon Prime on our Blu-Ray and just talk in place for 30-45 minutes of the movie.

So glad that you said good-bye to the 200s!!

That's great! I have a treadmill in the basement, but I feel all isolated and sad down there so I barely use it. I wish I had room for it in my living room in front of the tv. I walked a little over 2 miles this morning - first on purpose anything for me for a while. So emoticon here's to both of us making a streak of it.

May 2014 Review

Monday, June 02, 2014

I made some progress again during the month of May... although during the first couple of weeks I had a slight setback. Gained a few pounds due to water retention that was stubborn. Extremely stubborn. I had such good success with the Fast Metabolism Diet the first round... however, the second round I just barely held my ground. I don't think it was the diet... I think it was hormonal issues accompanied by extreme feelings of stress and other frustrating mental issues... As I neared the end of my second round on the FMD, I decided to try another way to get the weight moving down again... and to get rid of the water I was retaining, in spite of drinking 10 glasses of water daily.

In the past I have had success doing the Atkins Diet, so with much consideration of what I should do, I chose Atkins again, and I'm glad I did.

While I started the month of May at 203.5, I actually started Atkins around May 21/22 at 208. Within a few days I was back down, and not long after that I finally crossed over into ONEderland. I ended the month of May at 197!!! That's 11 lbs gone with Atkins with a net loss of 6.5 lbs for the month of May.

Also this month, my youngest son graduated high school! I am so proud of him! In the fall he will be off to college. Luckily, the one he's attending isn't too far from home and I will get to see him ... hopefully every weekend. :)

So, while May began on a rough note.. it ended on a good one.
I thank all my sparkfriends who helped me through some down times recently, too. Y'all mean the world to me!
