The end of a long day

Saturday, March 03, 2012

I was at the Y when they opened this morning at 8. Usually I meet my running partner but it was still raining this morning so I did a free weight workout and LOTS of time on the stretch trainer.

After my workout I went to the office to change clothes and go to a baby shower at church. Lots of yummy looking stuff that I've given up for Lent, so I stuck to the veggies and fruit. I made guacamole (the mom-to-be's favorite). I used veggies for dipping so I could save my calories for more guacamole!

By the time the shower was over and the clean-up was done, it was close to 1. I went back to the office to change into my running clothes and veg for an hour then headed for my race. It's a 6k. I was pretty happy to hit 1 mile at less than 9:30 (a 10 minute mile is a tough pace for me to maintain). At the 2 mile I was still under 20 minutes. At the 3 mile I was right at 30:30. The last part of the course is uphill. I crossed the finish line at 38:01. Pretty good for me on a 3.75 mile race. (And a big "THANK YOU GOD" for stopping the rain!)

oh...and I was first in my age group emoticon My award is a ceramic arrowhead (the race is to support a middle school swim team, the Red Skins).

I was STARVING on my way home. I had some Chick-fil-A coupons from previous races but I couldn't find them. I guess that was a sign to skip the fast food (even though Chick-fil-A does have some healthy options that I love). I came home and ate some of the rice and beans I made earlier in the week. The rice is actually Kashi 7 Whole Grain Pilaf...really healthy and YUMMY!

I was so tired after I ate. All of my muscles felt tight and sore. I soaked in a warm bath with some Epsom salts. After that, I couldn't keep my eyes open. I fell asleep on the sofa for a few hours and woke up about 9:30. Still had enough time to get to CVS before they closed and make a Kroger run to get the weekly specials before they end. I thought about taking care of that on the way home from the race, but I try to avoid the grocery store when I'm hungry.

now I'm sipping some chamomile tea and watching The Glenn Miller Story. I need to go back to sleep and be ready for another busy day tomorrow (that includes a 5k).

It was a dark and stormy night...

bad weather in our forecast tonight. Obie is as prepared as he can get

the ThunderShirt helps. Sometimes other distractions (a new toy or a bone) are still needed to calm him.

Jack was a stray, so storms don't bother him at all. He's just glad to have a place to sleep out of the weather!

I have a busy day tomorrow. Weather permitting, I'll meet my running partner for a quick run at 8:30. Then I have a baby shower to go to at 10. At 4 I'm running my first race of the year; a 6k. I ran it last year. The course is a little hilly, so I'll definitely get a good workout. I just hope the storms move thru before race time!

and I'll have the usual weekend errands & housework to do in my free time. emoticon

busy couple of days, but still got the workouts in!

Thursday, March 01, 2012

Wednesday: DH has been really busy at work so I've been trying to make sure he has a good dinner when he gets home (that's usually before I get home). Tuesday I cooked a pork roast in the crockpot. Wednesday I took most of the meat out and put it in the freezer for later. Then I cooked some dried beans in the au jus. While the beans were quick soaking, I did Pilates.

We've been slammed at work (we always are during tax season). I also had a funeral visitation to go to. I was trying to figure out a way to get in an evening workout. Fortunately there was a break in the thunderstorms late in the day. I changed into my running clothes at the office and went for a short run (4 miles). Then I came back to the office, cleaned myself up, changed back into my work clothes and went to the funeral home (a dear lady from our church passed away).

Thursday: This morning I had some Kashi 7 Grain Pilaf cooking on the stove while I did Pilates. I had to sneak a little for breakfast...I LOVE that stuff. Another busy day at the office. I was plowing thru the piles of stuff on my desk when the FedEx truck showed. I've been impatiently waiting for a pair of shoes 2 of my Spark buddies talked me in to ordering. Okay...they really didn't have to twist my arm.

I love them! They are actually comfortable for such a high heel. I got a great deal on them too!

After work it was off to Boot Camp. Monday night he did all legs, so tonight was all upper body. I doubt I'll be able to move my arms tomorrow.

Some of the crew from The Vampire Diaries came by during our class because they may want to film in the gym that we use.

DH had 'rice' (really the Kashi Pilaf) and beans for supper tonight. I don't know what I'll come up with for Friday night dinner.

got a really busy weekend coming up too. More about that later emoticon

Nice shoes. If guys had to wear high heels there would be a 50% rise in broken ankles.

Also, The Vampire Diaries is one of my wife's favorite shows.

You are a good time manager. I like that about you!!! Could have gone without the tax comment though. Bad memories from one year of working for a small CPA firm. Ugh!!

From Lent is a time of preparation for the initiation of people into the Christian life in baptism. It is also a time for the church to journey together toward Easter and the reaffirmation of the baptismal covenant. Lent is not about being miserable, sad, and funereal in anticipation of Good Friday. The Sundays of Lent are not part of the forty days of Lent and so remain "little Easters," as are all Sundays. Fasting and giving up something can be part of Lenten disciplines, but so can taking on some things.

I usually give up desserts for Lent (specifically chocolate). Sometimes that can be tough because my birthday is in April. One of the ladies at church always bakes me a chocolate pound cake (it's pure A W E S O M E N E S S). When my birthday falls before Easter, she's kind enough to wrap the cake so I can freeze it. She is so great! I know that I don't have to abstain on Sundays, but I really try to go the whole 40 days.

That last sentence in the info from really caught my attention: "Fasting and giving up something can be part of Lenten disciplines, but so can taking on some things." This year I've also ADDED daily push-ups, squats and lunges. My goal is to add at least 10 to my total count each day. For example, yesterday I did a total of 175 of all 3 exercises combined. Today, my goal is a combined total of at least 180 of all 3 exercises.

By Easter, I should look like a Marine!!! emoticon

I also gave up computer games (that includes Spark Trivia!) and I'm really trying to stay focused at work. No reading Spark blogs or message boards when I log my lunch!!!

February devotional

Sunday, February 05, 2012

the first Sunday of every month I'm responsible for the devotional before Sunday School. I either have to find somebody to do it, or do it myself.

today's was "The God of Second Chances". We had been studying Moses in our Sunday School lessons; this week's lesson we started learning about Paul. Both are prime examples of God giving a second (and third, and fourth, etc.) chance.

I also talked about my good friend in TX. About 5 years ago her DH died from cancer. She lost the love of her life and her very best friend. She's not the type of person who can be alone for 5 minutes. She had her grandchildren spend the night with her as often as they could. She kept busy because she didn't want to have time to think.

At first she was baking. She'd take brownies and cookies and cakes to work. After a few months, her co-workers nominated somebody to tell her to STOP BAKING! They were all gaining weight. She changed to quilting.

In the last year or so, she's felt ready to date. She tried online dating, but wasn't finding any promising leads.

Last year she went to her 45 high school reunion. She saw a man who witnessed her wedding! He and his fiancÚ had gone to the same JP to get married. They signed as witnesses on each others marriage licenses.

He was kind of quiet at the reunion. She found out afterward that his wife had passed away at the first of the year. She emailed him her condolences and told him what she'd gone thru with her grief. They started talking on the phone. He asked her to fly out for a visit (he lives in VA).

They got married in December. emoticon He's a great guy and I'm very glad they found each other.
