I need some help and advice.

I think I have figured out something about myself which may be an important barrier to my weight loss. I am having trouble with doing all the regular 'life stuff' and incorporating a new set of routines.

When I am off work and alone, no problem. I feel like my life just 'pushes' me off track and makes it much harder to make good choices like exercising and eating right. I will be honest I don't know how I can address this as I regard it as a personality flaw. But if I can read up on it perhaps someone else has encountered a problem like this? I need a new plan.

    In one's life, it seems as though we never have enough hours in the day. However, for our well-being, we NEED to take care of ourselves. I found this Spark People article which may be of use to you. Many emoticon

    Thanks everyone for your guidance on this topic. I feel like weight loss is so personal, it always feels like no one really understands when you struggle with something like this and the great thing I have found about sparkpeople is that you yes you still have to do it alone, no one can do it for me. But you don't have to BE alone and other people who know how you feel and what you are going through are here to support and encourage you. I appreciate the advice and the feedback and it has had a positive impact on me. Thank you all so much.

    I'm a big proponent of the "pick one thing and do it until it becomes a habit" method. Then pick another thing and another thing, and soon you have a whole bunch of new habits, but didn't have to overstress yourself by changing your entire life in one go.

    I agree, life seems to "get in the way". I also do well at home but I get to work and sticking by the stuff seems to be much harder. I'm a CNA and work in a nursing home situation with alzheimer's residents. I don't have near the stress at home vs work. It's sooooo easy to reach for that cookie as I'm handing an elderly resident a cookie. My hubby bought me a mug for work that I put my water in....it ways "work with me people". Cracks me up every time I read it. I put my ice water in there and take a sip of that instead of popping a cookie in my mouth (as well as dear ol' Aunt Millie). I'm going to start putting carrot sticks in a baggie and putting them in my scrub pocket for my own personal "snack" if the water just doesn't seem to do it. It's hard to stay with it but the pay off is so worth it. Feel free to email me as a friend if you need to....not a problem. Glad to help a fellow spark person. emoticon

    Well, I recently read an article about how not to blame "it" on something other than yourself. It said to rephrase the sentence and bring it back to yourself. Like your "LIFE" pushes you off track. It boils back down to you. You can plan for those events by having healthy food with you. Bring your gym bag so that you can stop and exercise after work. Look for the ways life gives you the opportunity to make a better choice.
Eventually it becomes a habit. Best wishes on your journey.

    NYDADDY, life tends to get in the way sometimes, doesn't it?? I don't think this is a personality flaw; I think it's just a facet of life that you can learn to deal with. Spark of course has so many great tips and resources, but I think the best thing is to start small.

Pick just a couple goals and habits and build those first. For instance, every day just focus on drinking your water, or cutting out soda, or whatever. Once you get that under control, take the next step and pick a new goal. Slowly build on your habits one by one. It takes time, but if you want the habits and lessons to STICK, it will take patience and persistence. The most important thing is to NEVER GIVE UP and don't let little setbacks derail you completely. Forgive yourself and move forward. SparkPeople.com is your best tool in this fight. New Year, New Focus

I am going to endeavor to have a new focus on myself. I was doing well with my diet and went of track. I am back in the swing of things and ready to push toward my goal weight by my goal date. I am also going to try to blog more consistently to help me track my nutrition and link it to my physical and emotional well being in an effort to better understand the relationship between the two.
