Warning, I’m going to sound like everyone here….I cannot believe it is already July better yet it is Friday too! Whoohoo! Three weeks from now I will be able to take a couple of days off paid (heading to Austin) in 6 weeks will be my first Olympic distance triathlon and 4 days after that my daughter will be starting 6th grade, a middle schooler, Wow! But let’s concentrate on the present shall we.
Another warning, going to recap June….In June I competed in a triathlon and then went right into training for the Olympic distance. Training has been going well. Swimming hasn’t improved much like I wanted it but I’ve come to realize that I’m just going to give it my all! It will be my first Olympic distance so I just wanting to finish! But I digress….I aimed for 1000 cardio minutes in June but pulled out only 945 but I burned over 11,215 calories, which shows that my workouts are for quality not always quantity. I have cycled 22 miles plus several spin classes and ran 24 miles. I have swum 2500 yards so that isn’t too shabby! But I know it all needs to step up in July!! I have been missing workouts which I cannot do in the month of July!
So I’m going to turn the heat up in July! Distances are going to increase which means time will increase as well. I cannot miss another swim workout either!! And they are opening our lake back up this afternoon, although it is about 6 ft above still, so I don’t know when open water swims can start occurring again. But that doesn’t mean I can’t hit the pool! On obstacle is that I’m going to Austin the weekend of the 22nd and I think my Mom is going with us which means my initial training while Emily is at her conference might be detoured a little. I might be able to get runs and swims in though and that is what I will plan. I also have a duathlon next weekend. I haven’t done this one before but I have been on the course and it is hilly! Signed up for the Athena class again so hopefully I will rock it!
So here are my goals for July:
~ Incorporate more stretching and yoga! I’ve been getting better with this but I noticed this morning that I am super tight – can’t afford to get hurt!
~Make all scheduled workouts – especially swim!
~Track eating better on Spark – I do this off and on, but I realized I burned a lot of calories last month, I did lose 2 pounds but I need to make sure I’m fueling myself properly too!
~1200 cardio minutes – which can be attained and then some if I hit all my workouts!
~Burn 14,000 calories - which again should be attainable if I hit all my workouts and will help with below goal!
~Lose 10 pounds which I think is totally doable! And this will put me on track for my overall goal for my birthday in September.
So I think these are pretty reasonable! Let’s make it hotter in July!

Howdy on the lovely Tuesday afternoon! I hope this finds you all having a wonderful day! My day is going okay with a minor bump more like a rock in the road but I’m not going to let it affect me!
So last night after work, I went to one of my local running stores to see about adding to my Amphipod Belt that I wear, I have the Race-Lite Go. More specifically I was wondering if I could add the fuel bottles to it or have to get a different belt. Well, I would have to get a different belt, RunLite 2+, etc. So because I wanted something to use right now instead of waiting (Ahem, impatient, yes I know) I bought the Handheld Pocket that uses a 12oz bottle. It fits really nice into my hand. I have yet to run with it but will probably run with it tomorrow morning, which brings me to the point of my blog.
So I’m talking with the owner about fueling for runs, hydrating, using GPS, heart rate monitors etc. He mentioned that he hardly wears his GPS (Garmin) any more that he really runs by his heart rate. Which I do as well but now that I wear my Garmin too I look at my pace. So this brought up the conversation of running at my max VO2. Yep, you guessed it according to some chart he brought up on the computer I run around my max consistently, which he says isn’t good. He mentioned that he used to run that way too and wondered why he wasn’t losing any weight and then he got injured, blah, blah, blah. He told me that I should be running much slower so that I could hold a conversation on while I was running. What? Slower, are you saying I’m out of shape? Oh then he went on to tell me I shouldn’t fuel prior to running and that I should especially not take a Gu prior to racing like I usually do. Insulin spikes. He went on to say that I should be taking an Omega 3 supplement and this other supplement that I can’t remember now but he sells (of course). He said I will notice a world of difference etc. But I digress a little….
My point with this is that I know I run on the higher end of my max heart rate and usually can sustain it for quite a while. I probably could hold on a conversation for a while but would probably stay quiet before long. His point was to slow down, which I will be able to run longer (theoretically) and eventually the speed will come. That is a hard pill to swallow for someone that is quite competitive with herself.
So it all comes down to running in an anaerobic state or aerobic state. Continuously running in an anaerobic state I will burn more protein than fat which could cause me to literally eat myself (dipping into my muscles instead of the fat storage) or running slower burning up that fat storage. Of course this also means I slow down to more of an 11-12:00 mile pace. Would it be worth it? Well, perk number one is I might actually start losing weight again. Perk number two is I might not injure myself or at least have less of a chance. Perk number three I could improve my overall endurance because I do want to be able to run longer than I do now. I want to train smart and efficiently. So what am I to do?
Where in your heart rate zone do you train at?

Funk! That is what I feel like I am in. Not sure why, can’t seem to shake it. Don’t know if it is home life that is causing it or just me or may be a combo. It is so hard to stay positive when you have no positivity (is that a word?) at home. Hubby is so negative, so woe is me. I hate feeling this way. Is he to blame, can you control your mood even if someone close to you is constantly in this self pity party? I’m not sure what to do…..
This weekend went by way to fast but most weekends do. Friday the kids and I hung around the house after I made a Wal-mart trip for church. We watched “New Moon” (I know I’m behind) and then hit the hay. Hubby made it home at a somewhat decent time since we had to be up and at them by 5:30. I opted not to try and squeeze in a run prior to leaving. If I cram too much in my hubby gets annoyed. Anyway, got everyone up and Emily’s gear packed within 30 minutes. I made a Green Monster while she munched on oatmeal. Elliott decided he wanted a donut and since I needed coffee it was okay with me. Stopped at 7/11 grabbed what we needed and headed to her race site.
This race was held at the Earlywine YMCA which is a newer Y. Very, very nice! Puts ours to shame up in Edmond and the sad thing is we are in the same county so it is the same funds. Supposedly this fall they are breaking ground for a new one, but I digress. We got there early because we had to pick up her race packet, which had Cliff Shot Bloks in it which I promptly confiscated (LOL!). And this other energy packet that I haven’t read yet but I thought that was cool. She was hoping for a cool shirt but it was the same as last time just with a different date (this is the Y triathlon series). Anyway, we got her body marked and while her and I set up transition hubby took Elliott over to the park area. Then it was just a matter of wait time. She did wonderful, I want to do a blog in her honor so this evening I will put that together (all pics are at home).
The remaining part of Saturday was running more errands for church then set up at church for activities on Sunday. I have made a new friend, Susan, who is now the Director of Nursery (I am in charge of Sunday School Rotation and Children’s Church) and we have become pretty fast friends since she has become more involved in the children’s ministry. Our attitudes are a lot alike and we both run! Plus as an added bonus she lives two blocks over from me (we live right across the street from church). So we spent three hours cleaning out our resource room so that we could organize the remaining stuff we need to do. Wow you would be amazed at how much our church has wasted over the years but that is another blog. After that Emily (who went to help) and I went home and picked up the house. I invited my parents and brother over for dinner. Hubby had a great idea that since I don’t eat meat to get a veggie lasagna that way I wouldn’t have to cook three different meals (one for me, one for him, and usually one for the kids). I ended up getting Emily a Cheese Manicotti because she doesn’t like veggies in her lasagna. Anyway, they came over and we had a nice dinner but I felt wiped by that evening. We watched a little of our recorded “America’s Got Talent” and then we hit the hay.
Sunday hubby left early to go scavenging for wood that they were getting rid of at work, so needless to say I did not get the ride in that I had planned. Got up to finish some stuff for church, went to church led both Sunday school and then Children’s church, cleaned up and then came home. Hubby was home by then so we ate lunch. I made a goat cheese, avocado, roasted bell pepper Sammie! It was very good believe it or not. Then I got my grocery list together. This was all after my wonderful son managed to get a splinter in his hand. Wow, try getting a splinter out of a 4 year olds hand. It took all three of us to hog tie him and get it out. I thought we were either going to break a bone from fighting him or DHS would have been called because of the bruising from trying to hold him and do it. Afterwards he goes “It doesn’t hurt me” like he was some brave boy. My hubby still called him a wuss which I think infuriated him more than being hurt over the splinter. Emily and I headed to the store to pick up groceries and then we went back over to church to get the sand boxes that we used for Sunday school out and brought the sand home (otherwise they would have thrown it away).
I then began to clean my bedroom. Why is it we neglect our rooms but make sure everything else is organized and clean? Hmm… Anyway, I brought a plastic three drawer container out of Elliott’s room and put it in my closet. You might ask what did you do with that? Well you see my hubby has a five drawer dresser, I have a three drawer dresser (both antiques). I guess it never made sense for me to have the bigger dresser since most of my stuff is hung in the closest except I have a ton of exercise clothes now. So I moved all my winter gear into this three drawer container (because you don’t want to have to get in the attic when it turns cooler if you need your capri running tights) and left all my hot weather gear in my dresser. Plus I have all my racing t-shirts that I wear too in there as well, plus the other un-mentionables. Now I feel a little better that I don’t have so much crammed into my dresser. Did laundry too but I still have a load to fold tonight.
So I took a break with a bowlful of cherries for a snack outside thinking that I would go make some granola when I noticed our “cold” front was coming in and that it was thundering a little. And I decided hey, I’ll go for a quick run! My hubby thought I was nuts but I wanted to take advantage of the “cooler” weather. So got ready, ate a shot blok set my Garmin for 7 intervals and out I went. I’ve come to realize how hard it is to run slower. I was averaging between 9:30-10:30 when I needed to be around 11:00, ugh! But I felt good it even sprinkled a little, didn’t get struck by lightning, which is always a plus but did manage to get some strange looks from people.
Made dinner, I made an awesome Lentil Meatloaf and a regular meatloaf for the hubby. Emily made porcupine balls too. Throw some sweet potatoes in and we also had peas. Yum, yum! We watched The Blind Side (I told you I’m behind in movies) which was so good! And then we roasted marshmallows in the fire pit. We were all lying on the trampoline watching a bat fly around and the lightening storm coming in when all of the sudden it started down poring. Guess the storm front made it in! So we went in and hit the hay.
So that was my weekend, sorry to be so wordy but I’m actually feeling a little better now. I had thought about not taking today as my rest day since the last few days of workouts haven’t gone as planned. I have to help my Mom with some material she needs written tonight then I think I will do some yoga and Pilates when I get home. Tomorrow morning I think I’m going to shake it up a little and go to a boot camp in the morning. My goal is not to miss any workouts this week and it get some morning workouts done too.
What are your plans for the week?

Whoohoo it is Friday! I don’t know why that is so exciting for me. I really don’t have anything amazingly planned this weekend. I guess I just look forward not to have to come into work. Not that work is horrible or anything. I don’t know.
Alarm went off this morning with every intention of going to spin class (no, I didn’t go last night) then run prior to work. Well…..I woke up and my stomach was, ahem, not great. So I reset my alarm thinking I would get up and run. Nope, thought the heat/humidity might not be a good mix. Thought maybe I should just do some yoga then. Nope, the lazy bug took over. What I realized after my morning debauchery was when I get too much sleep (8-9 hours) I tend not to want to get up. But lately, I have been reading past 10:00 so when the alarm goes off after say about 7 hours I’m okay. I actually never really went back to sleep and at one point I thought about going ahead into spin class but I was too late at that point. I should have gotten up and ran though, in between stomach issues.
So what is on tap for this weekend? Well tonight I’m not sure. If my stomach holds out (having bouts of issues) then I might go for a late evening run. I only need to do three miles so it shouldn’t be too hard. I really need to go run a few errands for church. Saturday morning Emily has her 2nd triathlon! She has trained a little more for this one but has not ridden the bike since the last one. Oh well, I think she has a great attitude about it so I’ll just be her support crew. Prior to going to her race I want to try and get another run in. I’m switching my Saturday ride to Sunday morning and running instead.
Then I have to go finish shopping or start shopping for church then go set up for Sunday. We do a fun day on the 4th Sunday and this is the 4th Sunday. Shouldn’t be a big deal but it will be a few hours. Sunday morning I will get my bike ride in before church and then after church I will need to hit the pool. Lake is still closed at this point so it is all pool swimming for me right now.
Sometime this weekend I need to do my own grocery shopping and preparation for the week. I want some good, healthy, cheap vegetarian meals. Is that too much to ask? I also want to start may be rearranging our dining room. We are converting it into a play/game room for the time being. We have a large kitchen with a full table in it so the dining room is not being used appropriately. So we are going to break our table down and store it under our bed and then re-arrange some storage. I’ll let you know if that happens or not!
So what is on your tap for the weekend? Beer?
