Not dead yet!

Thursday, August 09, 2012

Well, the head cold turned into a chest cold which turned into not-bronchitis-but-still-feels-nasty. Any exertion beyond walking makes me hack up a lung. Not pleasant, but improving daily. Hiatus will continue till next Sunday, I think. Considering that several of my friends have contracted pneumonia in the past month, I think I dodged a bullet.

School started on Monday, with all the attendant adjustments. You'd think after 10 years of getting a kid ready for school, we'd have this down by now. It did go smoothly this year, and having a schedule again after the free-for-all of the summer holiday is refreshing. The past three days have been spent getting my domestic ducks in a row and following up on some neglected tasks.

We must have been ill at the same time! I am still clearing lung-puppies, but as I smoked for so many decades I am not surprised. Hoping you feel better soon.

Getting on with it.

Friday, July 20, 2012

Well, that about says it all, doesn't it? emoticon

If you're not from around Aberdeen (or know someone who is) I'll translate for you:

SHUT UP AND GET ON WITH IT

I've spent the past two weeks kind of floundering around, trying to figure out my plan of attack. Should I exercise in the morning? Should I try this high protein plan? Lift weights? Walk? Treadmill or park? Do I need new clothes? A journal? emoticon

And then my friend from Aberdeen sent me this. And I howled with laughter. I had my answer.

HAUD YER WEESHT AN' GET OAN WAE IT!!

Body Assessment Day

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

Yesterday I had my body assessment at the gym. Much as I expected, my BMI is past 'obese' and into 'shocking'. Years of yo-yo dieting without any real exercise has taken a toll on my muscle, and now I'm largely (no pun intended) fat. Time to get serious. I would love to use the services of the personal trainer at the gym. She's a lovely lady, a real inspiration and fun to work with. And, she's $70/session. To be fair, I could knock that down to about $50/session, but I'd have to sign up for a year's worth of sessions, three a week. $600/month. A full 10% of our monthly income -- which is already stretched to the breaking point.

It looks like I'll be doing this on my own. I know that strength training is going to be a big part of my recovery. The gym has a nice set of machines that aren't too difficult to use, though I'd feel more comfortable with someone watching me for form, etc. Any suggestions out there? I'm thinking I should hang out with the Iron Maidens, if "Maiden" can stretch to include a 55 year old married woman. Is there an Iron Crones group? emoticon

Whatever you need to do you'll find the strength to do it.

Oooh, I had mine on the 16th and I also was very unhappy with my fat content. I mean, like you I'm sure, I went in knowing it would be bad, but I just didn't know HOW bad.

I was able to sign up for 8 sessions with the trainer, but after that I'll be back on my own! I recommend looking into the fitness classes, there are often ones that incorporate lifting. Other than that, just take it easy (in attitude, not effort!) and know that everyone there was new once too! Finally, variety is the key, mix it up! Try something new every day (or at least every week)! :-)

Impatient Me

Monday, July 16, 2012

I weighed in this morning and found I'd only lost 1/2 pound. I'm rather concerned, as I know (yes, I've been down this road before) that I usually lose big in the first few weeks, then taper off. I know that I wasn't able to exercise for a few days (road trip) and I didn't record much of what I ate during the trip -- but I also know that what I ate wasn't excessive or unhealthy.

Redoubling my efforts this week. I've got a meeting with a personal trainer this afternoon (!) and I'm keeping an especially sharp eye on my salt intake -- the edema is still very bad.

So at my last meeting with my weight loss doctor, he mentioned that the new recommendation for safe lasting weight loss is now 1/2 a pound a week. So really you are just doing it the safe healthy way - even though it can totally be frustrating!

Keep at it!
