A spark friend asked me today what my goals are and if I am continuously setting new small goals for myself.

Coincidentally, I was cleaning the bathroom today and pulled my goals that I had set in March off the mirror. I was surprised to read them and realize how I had "forgotten" them. Here are the goals and the only one that I have kept is drink 8 glasses of water 95% of the time, spend time with God each day 99%, and keep a positive outlook 85%.

I am going to rethink my goals and make them more doable and try to look at them more frequently than once every two months. Is it any wonder that I stopped loosing weight. I guess I thought the pounds would just fall off because I belong to Sparks and set up some goals..

In thinking about my goals, I don't want small ones. I feel like I should be able to do a lot more than I am on a consistent basis. Then I get discouraged when I don't get it done. I need to make some changes, but I don't know what.

3/22/10 This week my goals are:
Exercise at least 20 minutes a day x 6 days
Drink 8 classes of water a day.
Eat 5 F/V a day x 5 days (3 for 2 days)
Walk 7000 steps a day x 6 days
Clean office 30 minutes a day.
Spend time with God each day.
Keep a positive outlook

I may not get it done before we leave on vacation Thursday, but I WILL get it done.

    That is on aspect of my 'plan' that I've not yet fully (or maybe at all) developed. The goals. I know I need to, I know it will be benificial, but .... I really hate lists, thats the excuse i keep using. Stupid - I know. Hmmm... I wonder what other method I could use to set and track my goals, that does not include a list....

    Sounds like a very doable list, I have almost all of them in my "track other goals" Your last 3 are not on my set goals, but, I do try all of them daily, and as far as losing weight goes, I just seem to be at a plateau, and I know it will bust through soon, so will you. emoticon Mary

    Yvonne, you're right - you may have started a bit too optimistically (I always do that, too:-). It's so good that you're going to take time to reevaluate your goals. If you get it done before vacation, fine, and if not, that's fine, too. I'll echo Monty - if you have a hard time remembering to do them, once you determine what you want them to be - add them to your Other Goals page so that you can track them here. You'll get the added bonus of getting sparkpoints, too:-)

I'm glad you give yourself credit for meeting some of the goals, too - it's good to see what we DO as well as what we don't do:-)

    Hi Yvonne
A very interesting blog. If I may make a couple of suggestions and comments. I think that the goals you set up are realistic and in my opinion should be a part of ongoing goals. Each has to do with healthy living. In fact, the steps walked if 7000, could be over 20 minutes and are counted as an exercise also. Are the others like water and F/V being met, or is it a little high to start with. What I would suggest, if you put them on the mirror, you should see them, if you use that mirror. When you track spark points, there is one called track other goals and you could add all these goals to it and then track it. And if you are having a difficult time remembering or doing, I would be glad to send you a daily reminder. You also could set that up by adding it as an appointment and have it show up every day as a spark notice.
What ever I can do to help, let me know.

My First 5K

Today is the big day. I was up at 5:00 am. I don’t know why. Usually I’m up between 6:30 and 7:00 am. It is raining. That is okay. It usually doesn’t rain very long here. We get about 7” a year. Check in time is from 7:30 to 8:30. The race/walk starts at 9:00 so it has plenty of time to stop raining before the race starts.

DH got up at 6:30. We had breakfast. Probably shouldn’t say what I had, but it was toast, Brummels and Brown margarine, banana, coffee. It is what I have almost every day. We were ready to go by 7:10. It only takes 10 minutes to get there so we were there 10 minutes before they even started the check-in. Crazy weather!!! It is still raining and the temperature is in the high 40’s. Great day for a walk. Oh well, it still has time to stop before the race. We checked in and went back to the car to stay out of the rain and cold. DS and family got there a little after 8. The kids got in our car while mom and dad went to check-in.

It is getting close to start time and it is still raining. We got out of the car and headed over to the start line. We lined up at the back so as not to be in anyone’s way. When the starter said go, I took off with 2 GD’s. When things settled down there were about 5 gals in front of us and I decided that I was going to keep pace with them. The rest of the family figured I would slow down soon. We walked by the back of DS and families home at about the 1/2-mile mark. DIL stopped there with the two and four year olds. DH, DS, AND GS soon caught up and let me set the pace. It rained during the whole race, not hard, just enough to keep us wet. Anyway to make a long story short, I finished the 3.1 miles in 53 minutes. Not too bad for a 71 year young chick. WooHoo.

    emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon That is so wonderful, I did a couple 5k's back in the day, I was probably about 503 or 54, maybe both, I did it 2 years in a row, the 5k walk/run of the Los Angeles Marathon, both times, we did it in just under 2 hours, nothing to shout about for sure, but I was proud of it. Tou really did great.

That is so fantastic. I am so happy for you 53 minutes and you say not bad. I only walked one 5 K and if we would have walked together, you would be waiting in the rain for me to finish. You should be absolutely proud of yourself.

Had a very active day today. Cleaned my desk off this morning. Only took 2000 steps to get it done LOL. I used every excuse I could think of to take things to other rooms. Wanted to get my steps over 7000 today.

Went to lunch with a friend and then shopping. So far I’m over 9500 steps. Should reach 10,000 steps today. Having a very good day. Tired but satisfied.

My Spark Journey

When I joined SP in February I weighed 177 lbs. I lost 4 pounds that first month and was down to 173 lbs. That is a good amount of weight for me to loose in a month. I am not interested in a crash diet. I want to make lifestyle changes that I can live with the rest of my life. I changed the way I was eating. I replaced most of the sweets I ate with fruits and vegetables. I “knew” that I couldn’t eat 5 F/V a day LOL, so I set my goal at three. It was work to go from one a day to three, but I did it.

I upped my daily steps from 5,000 to 7,000. At 70 years young, I thought that was a good accomplishment. I felt good and was gung-ho. Man, this is going to be a piece of cake. Yeah, right!!!

Here I am three months after joining and down 3 more pounds. Dropped from four pounds a month to 1 1/2 pounds a month. Something is wrong here. Too many pieces of cake!!! I have found out that I am going to have to go back and do what I did the first month. I am not going to assume that just because I am logging every bite that I eat that I will loose weight. I need to go back to one small treat a day. I have increased my F/V to 4-5 servings a day – yes it can be done.

I have increased my steps to 8,000 a day and have started riding my bike. I ride my bike a couple of miles a day. My goal is to reach 5 miles a day by the end of the month. I have signed onto a challenge to loose 5 lbs. by the end of May. I intend to do it.

By the way, I had a birthday in there and am now 71 years young and going strong. WooHoo!!!

    Great going,Yvonne. It's probably better for us 'oldsters' to take it slowly. I'm impressed with your 8,000 steps a day. While my pedometer was working I only made that many a couple of times.

    Yvonne, you are doing so great! Even 3 pounds in 2 months isn't something to sneeze at:) But if you want it faster, I understand that, too:-)

I agree with Monty - excellent job at realistically looking at what you were doing and where you could make attainable changes. WOO HOO on the F&V - I struggle with that, too:-) And the 8,000 steps per day and the bike-riding - you're doing such a fantastic job, girl!:-)

Happy 71. I like the way you looked at what you were doing and made adjustments. Tracking food is a must but it will show you if you go over your calories and you did make the adjustment 8000 steps is great. Riding your bike with a goal of 5 miles is attainable. The 5 pound release can be reached. Just keep doing all you are and with your excitement and motivation, you can do it

Yesterday was a wonderful day. We went to church, which is always refreshing. God is so good. He has provided a wonderful family for us.

After church, DS, DIL, and family came over. DIL’s mother is here from Dallas to help with their move to a new house. After dinner we went for a 20 min. bike ride and then a 40 min. walk. The 4 yr. old started on the bike ride and decided she didn’t want to do it, so went back home. The two 7 yr. olds pedaled right along. After the bike ride we picked up the rest of the family and walked down to the river. I wish I had half the energy the GC’s do LOL.

This morning I am going over to help them pack. Then I will have my regular Monday lunch with a friend. She is such a good friend. I always look forward to seeing her.

Tomorrow is the big day. I have cataract surgery on my other eye. I am looking forward to getting it done. My depth perception has not been good since the surgery on the first eye. I feel like my eyes are fighting with each other LOL. The surgery is at 7:15 a.m. After the surgery we will go out to breakfast and then get the prescription for eye drops filled.

Tomorrow night we will go to Awana’s to see the GC get their awards. Like I said, God is so good.

    Good luck on your cataract surgery tomorrow. You will no doubt see quite an improvement afterward. Were to told to take Lutein or any vitamin products by your doctor? You should ask.
