HELP - Eating after exercise

I need your help, please.

I think my hiking is making me fatter, not thinner.

I'm doing 6-7 mile hikes now -- hard to believe a year & a half ago 15 minutes around the block nearly killed me -- but as soon as the hike is over I am STARVING to death so I'm eating mass quantities of food.

On Saturday after my hike I was so hungry that I WANTED to get onion rings or a shake to go with my teriyaki chicken sandwich but I was good and only got a salad with it. I continued to eat healthy things the rest of the day but I ate a LOT.

Any suggestions?

    Within a short period after a workout (20 minutes to 2 hours, I think is what I've read) is one of the best times to eat, but planning what to eat is important. Personally, that's when I plan my protein smoothie because it provides an easily digestible protein and quickly digested carbs.

Focus more on the quality of what you eat right after and you may reduce the need for quantity.

    The same thing happens to me the day after my running days. I feel like I cannot get full. Make sure you are eating stuff that'll really fill you up... lean protein, whole grains, and lots of veggies.

    I understand! Same thing happening to me lately. Lately, I've been running more. Eat breakfast before I run, breakfast after I run. I end up eating lunch, dinner, snacks...and going over my calorie range.

Are you eating before your hike? Maybe one reason you're so hungry is going without food for so long...

I came up with a couple ideas: half breakfast before exercise, half after. (this would work with something like oatmeal or PB & J sandwich... emoticon emoticon

Another idea: a small snack before your workout/hike and a small snack (like nuts, or trail mix--a handful) during the hike... and a regular meal after

I think eating a little at a time may keep your hunger at bay...

Also, what you eat is important. The salad was a good choice and you can have a lot of it, feel full for not too many calories...So, choosing foods that are full of fiber but not as high in calories may help.

I also feel really hungry before, after runs or if I swim (swimming makes me soo hungry)

Lost the rest of my 5 pounds!

Didn't lose the 5lbs the way that I would WANT to lose them or RECOMMEND anyone else lose them. I was sick for a week.

But they're gone, so yay!

    That is true - not a good way to lose the pounds but since they are lost that is good but keep up your workouts to keep them off. emoticon

After a couple weeks of 4 and 5 mile hikes on weekends, gymming it during the week, cutting back on sugar and tuna melts, what does the scale say?????????????

One pound gone.

Woo hoo!

If I can remember, we'll see what the measuring tape says tomorrow!

Admin Asst Day Lunch Recap

Yesterday's sugar consumption: A few Nips and a vanilla latte.

The vanilla latte was part of my Admin Asst Day lunch treat. In addition to that I had a cup of wild mushroom soup and half-order of a salad that, instead of the usual mayonaisey mixed chicken salad was a bed of greens with some grilled curry chicken slices plus fresh strawberries, pineapple, black currants, dried cranberries in a light vinaigrette. The only mayo-y curry sauce was a small amount on the slices of chicken themselves. Very nicely done; fresh & tasty.

As for today, once again it was a matter of FORCING myself into the gym, but force I did and I'm glad of it. Now I'm DONE with the gym for the week because Sat & Sun I have hikes I'm going on .

The funny thing about today is, I decided I HAD to have some chocolate, right? So I go down to the vending machine and at first it wouldn't take my dollar. Had to try several times before it finally sucked it in and allowed me to punch in the code to get my pretzel M&Ms.

And then OF COURSE they got stuck in the machine and there was no getting them out.

Thank you, machine, for keeping me on track. . emoticon

Wednesday Gym & Sugar Avoidance Update

Sorry for my boring Blog Titles.

Yesterday's achievements:

#1. Dragged myself to the gym and did weights and stair machine and treadmill.

#2. Only sugary treats consumed were 6 chocolate parfait Nips.

Why yes, I HAVE noticed that my consumption of them is increasing. LOL I think what I'm thinking is "OMG this is the only sugar treat left!!!" and I'm eating them out of desperation or something. Gotta work on that. No point cutting out all the other sugar if I'm going to be consuming an entire box of Nips per day by the end of the month. LOL

Today is Admin Asst Day lunch! Yay! We leave in 30 minutes. Can't wait!
