Challenge for Labor Day -33 days to go-Exercise Bog - 30 mains anyone is welcome!!!!!

Friday, August 05, 2011

Good Morning; I just got back from having my blood work done. I am starving right now. I went and had a massage yesterday. I feel wonderful-my shoulders were very tense. If you have the opportunity to have a massage get one. I go to a massage school where the rates are lower. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon DH and I are going out for breakfast. Every one have a great day!! How are you handling all this heat! We are having brown outs and they are threatening rolling brown outs. This will effect my work outs- I need a cool environment so I will have to get up earlier to get my steps in. We have been having triple digits temperatures for over a month now. Son found out yesterday, that he will probably be having another back surgery. He is upset about that. Two of the screws are not doing well. They are going to wait 5 weeks to see if it settles down. Not sure what that is all about. I would love for him to get a second opinion. emoticon have a good day!! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

It has been really hot here too, but, not 100 yet, I do not think, but way too hot to do anything outside, and my garden sure can tell it is being neglected. Oh well, what ever. I am staying in if I can emoticon
I sure hope your son does not have to have another surgery, I had such high hopes for this one. and yes, if a 2nd opinion is possible with our government today, he should definitely have it.
I just got back from getting my hair cut, then to exercise, I worked out on the machines, walked the track for 25 minutes and then aerobics class for 60 minutes. The a group of us went out to lunch, we went to Ono Hawaiian BBQ, a first for me, and it was very good, I enjoyed it and I was just adding up my calories, and I will have a very skinny dinner, like maybe a tomato and apple, that is it. and then I will be on the high side of my calories. It does not happen often, so Good for me.
Have a nice weekend, and I am still striving for my 5 pounds loss, by Labor Day. It will happen

Challenge for Labor Day -34 days to go-Exercise Bog - 30 mains anyone is welcome!!!!!

Good Morning; PBS Presents | Killer Stress: A National Geographic Special. I saw a program on stress last night. I just found it online, too. We all should be concerned about the stress in our life. The research was pretty compiling. Long term stress in the work place, with care givers, and others. I have known this for a long time.
emoticon Now how to solve the problem, exercise, food and the most important connection with others that can relate to you- support groups. I have known this for years, but have a hard time putting myself first to implement something especially when there is an intense situation in the home. I am getting better. I am very upbeat. I need quiet time and I will have much time to meditate today. emoticon emoticon emoticon Me time. I will do my exercise today. I will get my steps in. I will be on my treadmill today. What are you doing for yourself today? emoticon emoticon emoticon Every one get some movement in today!!
The show also states that stress hormomes can make it difficult to lose wieght. I have known this for some time. Just never had any proof. Lets start working on our stress levels, we all need to get healthy!! emoticon emoticon

I too of course have lots of stress, but I do handle it much better than I used to. I do make sure I have me time, no question about it. it may not come first, but very close any more. I need it.
I am going to try to cut back my daily calories, lots of days, I have to eat extra in the evening to get up to 1200 calories, and I think I can do just fine on 1100, and besides that, having a 3500 calorie deficient per week will be a lot easier, I think, if I can lop of 700 calories a week (or more) I really am working on our Labor Day Challenge. I can do this, We all can.

Everyone repeat after me, It IS OKAY to take ME time - and I will do it today, tomorrow ....

Today is clean the house day, been long neglected and have a breakfast meeting here on Saturday. Even if I weren't it needs to be done. I think this is the first day in quite awhile, don't have to be anywhere, take anyone anywhere - yippee!

What Are Sugar Alcohols?

What Are Sugar Alcohols?
What You Need to Know
-- By Becky Hand, Licensed & Registered Dietitian

If you spend any time looking at nutrition labels, you’ve probably noticed some intriguing ingredients in sweet foods that are touted as diet-friendly, sugar-free, low-carb, or even formulated for people with diabetes. One ingredient, known as sugar alcohol, is a special type of sugar replacement that is frequently found in soft drinks, gums, cookies, and sugar-free candy. Ever wonder what sugar alcohol is doing in these supposedly healthy foods? You're not alone!

What Are Sugar Alcohols?
The term “sugar alcohol” is very misleading. Sugar alcohols get their name from their unique chemical structure, which resembles both sugar and alcohol. But they're neither sugars nor alcohols. In fact, sugar alcohols are a type of carbohydrate that sweetens foods, but with half the calories of sugar. There are several specific types of sugar alcohols (usually ending with the letters "-ol"). When reading a food label, the following ingredients are actually sugar alcohols:
Erythritol
Hydrogenated starch hydrolysates
Isomalt
Lactitol
Maltitol
Mannitol
Sorbitol
Xylitol
Look familiar? You'll find sugar alcohols in a wide variety of foods (gums, pancake syrups, candies, ice creams, baked goods, and fruit spreads), health and beauty products (toothpastes, mouthwashes and breath mints), and even medicines (cough syrups, cough drops and throat lozenges). In the near future they may be found in pie fillings, cake frostings, canned fruit, beverages, yogurt and tabletop sweeteners.

Why Use Sugar Alcohols?
You may wonder why manufacturers would put sugar alcohols in foods and other products, or why people might seek them out. Here are a few reasons why consumers choose these products:
Fewer calories. Sugar alcohols contain fewer calories (0.2 to 3 calories per gram) than sugar (4 calories per gram), making them a diet-friendly choice for people who want to limit their caloric intake, but still enjoy sweet foods.
Safe for diabetics. Sugar alcohols are absorbed more slowly (and incompletely) by the body. Unlike regular sugar, they require little or no insulin for metabolism. *People with diabetes should consult their physician, dietitian or other health professional about incorporating sugar alcohols into their daily meal plans.
Better dental health. Sugar alcohols do not promote tooth decay since they are not metabolized by the bacteria that produce dental cavities.
Fewer drug interactions. Sugar alcohols do not react with the pharmacologic ingredients in medicines as much as sugar sometimes can.
Individual tastes. The different types of sugar alcohols vary in sweetness, from being about half as sweet to equally sweet as sugar.
In addition to consumer desires, sugar alcohols appeal to manufacturers too. Here's why:
Sugar alcohols do not lose their sweetness when heated, although many artificial sweeteners do.
Sugar alcohols do not absorb water like sugar does. Therefore the surface of foods made with sugar alcohols won't become sticky as quickly as products made with sugar.
Molds and bacteria do not grow and multiply on sugar alcohols as well as they do on sugar.
They can use a combination of sugar alcohols, sugar and/or artificial sweeteners to give the most pleasant taste, appearance, and texture to a food product.
Are Sugar Alcohols Safe?
Sugar alcohols have been used for years. After careful review, scientists have concluded that they are safe for human consumption. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies some sugar alcohols as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) and others are approved as food additives.

For some people, consuming certain sugar alcohols in excessive amounts may cause gastrointestinal upsets such as gas, bloating and diarrhea. Whether or not you will experience problems will depend on your individual sensitivity level and the other foods you consume at the same time. It is best to find your individual tolerance level when using these food ingredients, and to avoid them if they cause discomfort.

so, I guess it is up to the individual whether or not he wants to use sugar alcohols or not as long as we read the labels, right?

"To all the wonderful folks at Operation Paperback, First of all I just want to say thank you very much for your support and for all the wonderful books that were sent. It is greatly appreciated. Some folks I was able to correspond directly with and that was wonderful. I want to specifically thank Mr. Kern of Califon, NJ, Mr Wickstrand of Vero Beach, FL, Ms. Loscalzo of South Gate, CA and Ms. Mack of West Orange, NJ, and The AHRC Suffolk of Ronkonkoma, NY. If there is anyone I forgot to name, I apologize. I still very much appreciate the books and the support. Alas, it seems my time in Iraq may be drawing to an earlier close than I expected. So, unfortunately I am going to have to take my name off the list. Once again, I want to say thank you so very much for all the support. "

Challenge for Labor Day -35 days to go-Exercise Bog - 30 mains anyone is welcome!!!!!

Wednesday, August 03, 2011

Good Morning; I slept pretty good last night. I woke with my BP excellent and my glucose good. It seems my glucose has been a challenge- b/c when I eat more carbos - it goes up. Normally it is in the 80's in the morning, but lately it is in the 90's in the morning. I take a sugar buster supplement to manage the glucose when it tracks higher than normal. When I travel overseas, I eat more bread due to the culture and I track higher so I manage it with my supplements. emoticon emoticon emoticon Labor day is coming up. This challenge has not been as hard on me like the other one. I did not set my goals with a high weight goal. I set my goals with my BP, glucose and getting my injured body healthy again. My left knee feels weak this morning. I will get my steps in but I will do it with much less incline. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon Every one have a wonderful day!!! You can do it. Get up and move!! On TV last night, a study said that 10 minutes of exercise per day is a benefit.
have a wonderful day!! You deserve to have a healthy lifestyle.
