Santa Run

Wednesday, December 05, 2012

Today I signed up for the Silicon Valley Santa Run on December 16. I also signed up my daughter in law and son! My son will push my grandson in his stroller. This should be fun! We are all getting long sleeve t shirts and a Santa costume. The organizers want this to be the largest group of Santas running in a race. We did break the record for the largest number of finishers in a timed Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving this year with over 20,000 finishers. This Santa run should be fun!!

This is going to be so awesome! They do a really expensive gorilla run in my town once a year where you get a gorilla suit as part of the run...I'm thinking I should save up and do it despite the price because YOU GET TO KEEP THE SUIT!

:)

Enjoy your race! emoticon (had to use this since I don't think there's a Santa icon for some reason)

Breakfast by candlelight?

Friday, November 30, 2012

I woke up early this morning due to the sounds of wind and rain. I looked at the clock to see what time it was, but it was dark. The storm passing through had knocked out the electricity. Fortunately my phone had an alarm set, so I didn't need to worry about the clock radio waking me up in the morning. Well the phone alarm went off as expected and it was still dark. I grabbed a near by flashlight and went into the kitchen and turned on some battery operated candles my mother in law had given me for Christmas a couple of years ago. It was going to be Breakfast By Candlelight this morning!

I went to my phone to check some work and personal emails and was very surprised to see that wifi was working! I figured I would be on 4G due to the fact that the box that provides tv, phone and internet services was out!

Since I normally eat oatmeal for breakfast, I was contemplating which cold cereal I was going to have and then having to get ready for work in the dark. Then all of a sudden I hear several noises and the power was back on! I turned off all of the candles, prepared my oatmeal and had breakfast in normal lighting. It would have been fun having it by candlelight though. The storm is passing, but there is another headed through on Sunday, so maybe I will be having breakfast by candlelight that day!

I loooove storms. But mostly on days when I don't have to go into work and when they don't knock out the power. And we don't even HAVE cold cereal in the house, so I would have had to settle for a pb&j by a flashlight with dying batteries.

Those battery operated candles came in really handy for my family during Hurricane Sandy! I am glad your power came back fast!

Holiday Family and fitness

Tuesday, November 27, 2012

I had a great 4 days off from work. On Thursday I participated in the nations largest timed Turkey Trot held in downtown San Jose. There were over 20,000 participants! We all raised over $1.2 million dollars for 3 charities.

After showering my husband and I went to my brother's home for Turkey dinner. I was careful not to overstuff myself. After dinner my son, daughter-in-law and grandson came over for dessert and to celebrate my son and brother's birthdays. After eating some birthday pie (I brought a homemade pumpkin (using fresh cooked pumpkin) and a homemade french apple pie (my favorite) I took my grandson to the back room to play with trains. He was getting tired and wanted to go home even though they had just arrived and it was only 6pm and I knew he would stay entertained with the trains.

On Friday a friend an I went to Muir Woods and went on a lovely hike through the redwoods.

On Saturday we went to Monterey Bay Aquarium and spent some time with the jelly fish and other ocean life. After spending a few hours here, we headed to Santa Cruz. We went over to Natural Bridges State Beach and hiked over to the area where Monarch Butterflies migrate and stay from October through March. It was warm, so they were flying around. They cluster in cold weather and don't move unless it it warmer than 45 degrees. They can't fly unless it is warmer than 55 degrees. We are lucky to live where the Monarch spends such a long time. Other generations of the monarch only stay 6 weeks when they move on. After photographing the monarchs we went down to the beach to photograph the Natural Bridge. I need to figure out how to re-size the photos. They are to large to post in this web site.

Sunday I got to spend the day with my son, daughter-in-law and grandson. I love being able to spend time with them!

My Lost Ring

Sunday, November 11, 2012

Yesterday when heading off for San Francisco to run the Mermaid 5K, my hand felt weird and when I looked at it, my wedding band was missing. I never take it off, which meant it felt off. I got this wedding band from my husband at Christmas time 8 years ago. This was a few months before our 25 anniversary. At the time I was 20 pounds heavier than I am today. When my hands are cold I can actually shake my hand and the ring will fall off.

I couldn't imagine where my ring would be. My daughter in law suggested that I look in my bedding when I got home. She has lost 55 pounds and has lost her ring in her bedding in the past. When we got home from the run, I looked in the trunk of her car, since I had gotten my grandson's car seat and stroller out of there to put in my car, but no ring. When I changed my clothes, she looked in my bag to see if she could find it, but no ring. When I got home I looked through my bedding, but no ring. As I unpacked my bag, I looked through all of the pockets of my running pants, jacket, shoes and the empty bag, but no ring.

I was beginning to think I was going to have to figure out a way to explain to my husband that I had misplaced my ring. As I put my bag back to where I usually keep it, I looked down and there it was - my wedding band had to have fallen off my finger as I was picking up my bag to pack it the night before. It had never just slipped off that easily. I guess it is now time to go get it re-sized so I don't ever have to worry about it just slipping off again!

Whew, what a relief that you found it! Definitely get it resized before wearing it on your finger again - losing it for good would be too upsetting!

Congrats on the NSV of it becoming too large (your finger too small)!

Mermaid San Francisco 5k

Sunday, November 11, 2012

This morning I was up at 5 to get ready to run another 5k in San Francisco. This one was sponsored by The Mermaid Series. I drove up to meet my daughter-in-law and her friend in Fremont. I got there by 6 and we were delayed a bit getting out of there. Veronica was going to walk rather than run because her back has been bothering her for a week now. I told her she didn't need to go, but she said she was going to do it anyway. My son had to go to work, so we also had to bring my grandson. He wasn't cooperating this morning, am
Nd I don't blame him. It was quite early. So I installed his car seat in my car and loaded his stroller while mom was getting him ready. We didn't leave until 6:30 and it was going to take at least an hour to get to San Francisco, so I was beginning to worry a bit about making it to the start line on time. We finally made it, but parking was very full. We finally found a spot and it was 7:45. We were kind of far from the start so I left Veronica and her friend behind and jogged over to the start. I had about 5 minutes to wait for the start. The count down began and we were off. The day was beautiful, but on the cool side. I ran through Crissy Field towards the Golden Gate Bridge and was running at a pretty good pace (for me). I ended up finishing in 31 minutes 31 seconds - my best time ever! I ended up 4th in my age group and 176th overall - which isn't bad for someone who has been running for less than 3 years.. After finishing, I went over to look for Veronica and Everett and saw that they were coming into the finish shoot. They completed their power walk (pushing a stroller) in 52 minutes. I let her know I was very proud of her and actually surprised she had finished so soon since her back was bothering her. Everett wasn't very happy because he doesn't care for loud noises, so we decided it would be best to head on home. After I got home I headed over to Sports Basement to go pick up my bib number and shirt for the next 5k - a Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot to help raise money for local housing and a couple of other local charities
