24 years old pre-diabetic/high cholesterol?? Yea rite!

Thursday, February 17, 2011

I just talked to my doctor with the results from my annual test. Im 24 and pre diabetic with high cholesterol. How do I digest that?? I know I have a weight problem. I've had one all my life so what am I going to do now to lose the weight to save my life?? This is only going to make me stress out even more knowing I have these illnesses plus polycyctis ovaries.

With school in the way and working my time is so limited, but I guess that doesn't matter when your life is at risk. I got to do something and something now! But I've been here before saying I'm going to lose weight, I'm so motivated, I'm so determined. And I end up in the same spot that I'm in now.

Mood: drained!

You're in my prayers mama! Life does get in the way sometimes but we have to live! Living healthy is priceless and no degree, job, or anything else is worth more than that. Dust it off and start small and before you know it you'll be on the right track. You can manage everything with diet and exercise. Aim for 5% at a time and it'll be a little easier...

Hi. I did a self diagnosis of PCOS before the doctors ever told me what it was. I was doing research on it, but I couldn't find as much information then as what is available now. I think I was about your age in 2006 when the doctors told me. They didn't give me much information, just started me on birth control pills to regulate my cycle. They don't always work. I wanted to know what to do. They say, "Well, you need to lose weight." The truth of the matter is yeah I did and still do need to lose weight, but it wasn't that easy. They also should have told me to choose carbs that were better for me b/c being insulin resistant, your body processes the carbs different from people whose body isn't resistant to insulin. One might think it's common sense to eat the better carbs anyway, but nope. If you think that you are following a plan where you are reducing your intake, etc, you may not realize that all carbs are not created equally (glycemic index). You have to be very careful about what you eat and how much you eat. Find something that works for you. Also, when exercising, make sure you get in some strength training because it will make a world of difference. Sometimes it seems so hard, but know that you are worth it and can do it. I have to tell myself that all of the time. It doesn't matter if you start off small doing some squats or walking for 10 minutes at a time when you might have a small moment. I always used to say that I didn't have time to workout because I was too tired, etc. Now, I am working on a stressful job, and all I want to do is go home and lie in bed and watch tv. Well, I can lose some hours in watching tv and surfing the internet which is time I could definitely be working out. I know this was kind of long, but I hope that you know that it isn't impossible.

Some of what I would have said has already been said, however AlwaysChanging really beat me to it - go back, copy her last paragraph and put it in a spot where you will see it often AND tell us what you need.

Meanwhile, hugs to you young lady...

You can turn the situation around with healthy eating and by moving more throughout your day. As busy as you are, eating healthy doesn't take any more time that eating junk. It may take some planning but you can do it. And even small steps like taking the stairs at school or work, parking further away and walking - those add up and will help. Find what works for you and DO it. Sometimes this kind of news is exactly what we need to make us realize it's time to take our health seriously. You're worth the effort!!!!! emoticon

Life often gets in the way of what we want most which is to get healthy but to keep it real, getting healthy is more important than the roadblocks life often throws in our way. As a woman that also suffers from Polycystic ovaries, has dealt with working full time and sometimes even having part time gigs at the same time to make ends meet, going to school(also fulltime) and raising a family I am going to have to shout at you a bit and say "YOU HAVE TO DO THIS!!! YOU HAVE TO INVEST THE TIME IN YOURSELF TO GET HEALTHY, TO LOSE THE WEIGHT TO REGAIN YOUR LIFE AND LEAVE THESE ILLNESSES BEHIND! YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE WORTH THIS AND THE ONLY WAY IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN IS TO LEAVE THE DESTRUCTIVE NEGATIVE TALK BEHIND!!!" You've had your pity party, but now my darling, now is the time to put on your big girl panties, decide if you are worth it and figure out how you are going to fit bursts of fitness into your busy lifestyle.
I believe you can do this, I believe you are worth it and I believe that if you put your mind to it, you can go back in 6 months to a year and have your doctor shaking his/her head in awe at how you have reversed his initial diagnosis.
So tell me sister girl. Are you worth it? Will you finally say this is enough and I am going to stop talking about this and do it? I am here with you, willing to take the steps with you..just tell me what you need.

I got the same news a few years back. It sucks!!! BUT just put more energy into getting healthy than you do into stressing.....stressing won't help. Chef is right, exercise does help. In fact that is how I manage my condition entirely!! I didn't take the meds. I joined Spark and got to it!! I didn't even exercise at first......JUST followed the calorie recommendations. I really don't recommend not exercising though!! It just makes you feel amazing!!!!!!
Follow their recommended range and PLAN ahead. Being as busy as you are, you will have to do some serious planning and pack your meals and snacks.....just make them fit into that range!! Seriously, I've lost 65 pounds and I now have a regular, normal cycle (Oh JOY emoticon) just doing that!!
Do it because you're WORTH it!!!!! Do it because you HAVE TO ~ there is NO OTHER WAY ~ if you don't the next step will be diabetes and other health issues!! Do it because you CAN!!!!

Two years ago my husband got the same news. He was in shock. You'll get lots of advice, but I'm throwing mine in. First, he read 'Stop Prediabetes Now' by Jack Challum and followed the diet in it. He took it very seriously.

After doing more research, he chose to follow the diet in the book 'Syndrome X' by Gerald Reaven. Syndrome X is another name for prediabetes, and Dr. Reaven was the first to call it syndrome X (but now it's just called prediabetes).

The Reaven diet gives sample menus, and I chose from the ones we like, or that I wanted to cook. There are some desserts, too.

We got a digital food scale and weighed everything. Within a year his blood sugar and his weight were normal again.

Your youth is on your side! You can do this! emoticon

Make small changes...start with drinking more water. Then throw in some jumping jacks thru out the day. You don't have to do a full fledge workout to make a difference. Little suttle changes are easier to maintain then working out an hour 6 days a week. That will get old fast and you will lose motivation. Take baby steps..but you HAVE to DO SOMETHING!!! Your too young.

Don't get down. Even a small reduction in weight can reduce your pre-diabetic risks. I was diagnosed the same in December. Here is what I learned with my research:

1) Exercise fixes pre-diabetes
2) Cinnamon helps a lot (some how it helps your body process the glucose (what all food is turned to eventually when our body uses it))
3) Food can be your friend and you can still lose weight.
4) If you can't get your sugar under control with your diet with PCOS ask your Dr about Glucophage while you are losing weight.

Don't let it get you down...I will send you an email in the next day or so with more of the info I have found on pre-diabetes/insulin resistance.

YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!!! YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!!! I had high blood pressure and at 26! I was SO embarassed and so discouraged...they also told me I was pre-diabetic in that appointment...and to top it off! I had already lost 40lbs. I felt so bad. BUT another 20lbs later my blood pressure is EXCELLENT!! No meds!!! I don't know about my pre-diabetic status, but all we can do is our best. The doctor also told me that sometimes we can't out run our heredity! So don't beat yourself up if your best doesn't completely get rid of your health problems- but JUST give it your best!!!

1st test of the Holiday Season: Party at work!!!!

Thursday, November 11, 2010

1st test of the holiday season: snack day at work. everyone brought what they wanted and ofcourse it was junk! i brought shrimp cocktail.

before i went i had yogurt, fruit, and water so i wasnt starving but had an appetite. when i walked in i immediately looked at the buffet of food to see what was the healthiest. i'm a sugar addict and there were 3 desserts: chocolate cake, key lime cake, and strawberry short cake!!!

I ate:

salsa/cheese dip (about 2-4 tbls) with tortilla chips

grapes, two pieces of cheese (size of dice)

broccoli with a sauce like ranch (maybe 1 tblspn)

shrimp coctail (my favorite and i ate enough lol)

1 bite of a chicken wing (didnt want it)

about 2 tblspn of pasta salad

finally 1 forkful of key lime cake (after i finished the 1st foods so i dont over eat my favorites--sweets)

WATER for beverage of choice--they had straight soda and juice. I dont care for soda but I love juice.. skipped right pass it!!

I must say that I'm really proud of myself. Not only did i pass up my favorite (sweets), but I didn't binge eat like normally and feel miserable after...

My advice is to go to all the lil in between holiday parties you can to get some practice for the main days (thanksgiving, christmas, new years)so you can see what types of foods are offered and get some practice for eyeballing serving sizes..it's worth it!

Zumba class tonight to work off what i ate.....
