Forget the scale

Sunday, January 15, 2012

The scale was up again yesterday for my Winter 5% weigh in (sorry Teddies, I thought I had posted it but was mistaken). Actually up .7 above my start weight for this challenge. I've been focusing on strength training now as my goal is to be firm and fit without any jiggles!

Noticed that lots of Teddies have weight that is either staying the same (plateau) or up a bit and I DON'T WANT YOU TO GET DISCOURAGED!! It's not the number on the scale that is the only measure of the progress we've made and continue to make! Take your measurements each month to chart inches lost. Notice how much easier it is to do that 40 minutes on the treadmill. Congratulate yourself when you eat more freggies or try a new healthy food.

JAZZEJR shared this blog with me and with some of you and I think it's really worth passing it along again. This shows that it's NOT the scale that matters. I'm about 135 lbs but have gotten to a size 4/6. Being in shape is more important to me than weighing 128 (which is my dream weight.) After a year on SP, I just don't care about that number anymore!

I encourage you all to look at the pictures from the blog that I have included in a link. That tells the important story. Don't give up if the scale isn't moving; keep going and you'll see results!!

You are so right about using other measurements, such as inches lost, for the emoticon is seldom our friend. With the strength training, you are gaining muscle which is leaner than fat, and burning more calories, you will see some movement on the scale...consistency is the most important.

Thanks for the link... Amazing how a body can change so much without the scale moving. Such a great reminder that our NSV's and measurements are just as important.

I constantly say screw the scale. It is hard, but I say it. I hide it under the bed in a different room, and it comes out maybe once a month so I can track. But sometimes, I just let it sit under the bed, b/c really......does it matter all that much?

HEALTHYBARB1 1/15/2012 8:39PM

I needed this reminder...the scale is not in charge of how I look or feel and does not seem to show all the work we put in to our health...I feel good about all the healthy changes I have made and find that I need to place more value on my effort and exercise minutes as the weight loss has slowed of late. Thanks for the blog! Hugs Barb

If I just went by the scale I would have quit a long time ago!!! I feel stronger and I feel healthier....these are more important than the number on the scale. Thank you for sharing

MAGGIENCALI 1/15/2012 7:37PM

For me, the scale is not my only measure of my success. I use smaller clothes sizes and how I feel on the inside out. Yes, it can be discouraging at times. I just have to remind just how far you have come to get to where I am today and keep on keeping on. That ususally picks me up after the scale doesn't move or goes in the wrong direction.

EJOY-EVELYN 1/15/2012 7:25PM

You're right . . . there's so much more than that number on the scale. And yet, we often give it way too much power. I've learned to keep that power in check (but it took a long time to let go of that power) . . . but give me three weeks in a row of being up, and I'll be taking some action to determine what action might need to be changed.

7 days of blogging for LTGL

Saturday, January 14, 2012

DD has 2 shows today so I do volunteer work when I'm not watching the show (and no I'm not going to see all 30 performances!) Going to a new sushi/thai restaurant for dinner (it's yummy; have eaten there twice already) then will watch the show from the control booth where they call the cues and do the lighting and sound. Never been in there before so I'm excited!

I'll be posting a blog about DD's show this week (since we have to blog for points for the LTGL (living the good life) task for the Winter 5%.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful Saturday. Make the most of each day!

Fun! I look forward to hearing more about the show.

I love our Thai buffet. My favorite is the green curry (heavy on all the veggies and lighter on the sauce) with a little added chili heat. It's been too long since my last Thai meal -- and I see that suppertime has come -- no wonder I'm a bit hungry.

What a difference a year makes!

Sunday, January 08, 2012

This week was my 1 year Sparkversary. Things are so very different now. When I joined SP on 1/2/11 I weighed 189, had a BMI in the OBESE range, was a couch tater supreme who never worked out, ate lots of horrible food and barely cooked, wore size 16/18 clothing and was embarrassed to be seen by anyone.

This was taken a couple of weeks after I joined SP so I probably looked even worse!

Now I weigh in the low 130's, have a BMI in the healthy range, work out 6 to 7 days a week which I actually enjoy, eat all kinds of healthy foods while cooking many new recipes, wear a size 4/6 and am proud of how I look!

Size 4 jeans!!

Comfortable in my body at last

I've lost weight before but this time is different. I'm not sure what my ultimate weight goal will be; I might be there now (I'm below my WW goal weight). This time my goal is to be extremely fit. I'm working towards that now by doing ST three times a week because it's more important that I'm toned rather than I reach a certain number on the scale. Because I'm not so invested in the scale, I don't get upset when the number goes up. Too many of us get discouraged because everything is tied to that number; it determines if we're having a good day or a bad day. I refuse(d) to have that attitude -- I was sticking with this no matter how long it took or if the scale went up or down.

Everyone can do this because I know that if I can, anyone can be successful. It requires commitment and determination. It means you won't give up if you've gained a pound one week even though you did everything right. It means that eating over your calories doesn't mean anything other than eating over your calories; you're not a bad person, you didn't ruin everything, you just go on from there and make better choices the next day.

I continue to be grateful to all my friends here on SP. There are many who motivate and inspire me. I'm so happy to be the Motivation Leader of the Teddy Bear team these past 2 5% Challenges. I hope to be motivational but also this keeps me on the straight and narrow (I mean how off can I go when I'm a team leader?)

Wishing everyone a successful 2012. May we all be healthier and happier and focus on the positive changes we've made.

These pants used to be tight. Now they're going in the give away pile. Love how my arms are showing definition!

Getting ready for the Winter 5% Challenge

Monday, November 28, 2011

TERESA159 & THETURTLEBEAR had the right idea, putting all the pre-challenge assignments in one blog. I've been busy dealing with DD's eating disorder but decided to take some time to get these completed.

#1 Getting Ready
Have you got your gym clothes, runners, water bottle, etc. ready to go? - Since 1/3/11!
What is your exercise plan? - Going to up my ST this challenge.
Do you know what diet you will follow? - Will continue to track my food & stay within calorie range most of the time.
Do you know how to connect with your team mates? - I'm the ML for the Teddy Bears so I'll be doing a lot of interacting!
Did you put your Winter 5% Challenge Commitment on your page? - I'm going to after i finish this blog.

#2 Time to update your Spark Page:
I updated my page after the Fall 5% but am about to get into the Winter theme appropriate for the Winter 5%.

#3
List all the reasons you want to lose weight. What do you want to change? How do you want to look? How do you want to feel? What things will you be able to do in the future with a slimmer healthier body? And list all the OTHER things that you want to change:
I've definitely gotten a lot healthier & fit since I joined SP in January. I'm hoping to get to goal during the Winter 5%. Having lost over 57 pounds and gone from a size 16/18 to a size 6, I'm feeling stronger & more confident. My primary goal is to be really fit rather than to weigh a certain number on the scale. I've gone from a BMI in the obese range to a normal BMI.

#4
A "Trigger Food" is defined as the one that gets you off course for the next hour and you are not eating because you are truly hungry. List all your trigger foods: I don't keep things around that set me off but will buy them on occasion then throw them out (sweets mainly.)

#5
Please update your data in Start/my Goals & Progress. Calculate your 5% (goal): I'm about 4 lbs from goal which is under 5%. Not sure what I'm going to do about this as I'm aiming for fitness rather than a particular weight.

#6
Time to look at the diet plan, clean the fridge, tidy the pantry, make a grocery list and shop:
I've been doing this since January, healthy meals, fridge stocked with fruits & veggies, making new recipes.

#7
Is there something you eat often that you have learned to cut the calories on? What works best for you? Do you have something you can share with us?
I've cooked a lot of things from the SP cookbook & I get healthy recipes online or from my Eating Well magazine. I use turkey in meatloaf, egg whites instead of whole eggs, add more vegetables and eat more vegetarian meals.

I'm ready to have another successful 5% Challenge! Hope everyone sees lots of progress on all teams and really wish that everyone who signed up for the Challenge participates fully.
