My motivational SparkFriend CORKYTHEMOM always writes very inspiring and thought-provoking things. Recently she wrote "the only difference between try & triumph is a little umph!" I thought that was really great and it got me thinking about the word try.
To me there is doing or not doing. I feel that "trying" is another word for "not doing." Hope no one is offended by this; it's just how I feel. People say that they will "try" to do this program, they will "try" to exercise, they will "try" to eat right. I say, just DO it! This is not about being perfect, just sticking with it most of the time. It doesn't mean that we won't go backwards at times, eat too much, eat the wrong things, blow off the exercise. But we can DO this. We can make this a permanent new healthy lifestyle.
So, I am not "trying" to live more healthfully; I'm doing it. I'm choosing to eat fruits & vegetables instead of junk food, choosing to go to the gym instead of lazing on the couch, choosing to stay within my calorie range. I've made so much progress in my 4 months with SP and am much happier. I am determined to reach my goals and maintain my new lifestyle. I will be here for my friends as they are here for me, working towards reaching our goals & then maintaining them. Let's all DO this, together!

Not that long ago my DD came into my room & laid down on my bed (I'm a fortunate mom whose teenager still likes to talk to me & cuddle!) "What's that?" she asked. Well, to my horror, she had just spied the box of Devil Dogs I had hidden under my bench. She told me that she didn't eat those so I didn't have to keep them in my bedroom. What she didn't know was that I was hiding them so that she wouldn't see me eating them! That's right, I was a secret eater. I'd come home & stash the unhealthy food in a cabinet with my china (meaning a cabinet my DD never opened.) That was a big wake up call (plus not being able to fit into any of my clothes!) What was I doing? I vowed to stop the closet eating. If I wanted a Devil Dog I'd eat it in the kitchen; no more hiding food.
Next week will be my 4 month Sparkversary and what a difference in my eating habits! No more Devil Dogs or chips or cakes & cookies. I'm not depriving myself; I just don't want them. Tracking all my food has made me conscious of what I put in my body. I guess it helps that I like fruits & vegetables. It also helps to have a daughter who is very health conscious and wants to cut out all processed foods, which we are working towards.
What do I snack on now? I have a new favorite and highly recommend it! I mix one cup of plain Greek yogurt with 1/2 T of honey, 1 T of wheat germ or 1/8 cup of granola, sprinkle in some cinnamon and add whatever fruit I feel like eating such as 1/4 cup of blueberries & 1/2 cup of strawberries. Today I think I'll have some mango. This is so delicious, nutritious, and satisfying! Greek yogurt is more expensive because it takes 3x the amount of milk to make it but it's worth it. It's double the protein of regular yogurt so it keeps you full longer. You can also get Greek yogurt with the fruit already added but I really enjoy mixing up my own. My daughter loves this too and had it for dinner.
I think it's really important to take pleasure in what you're eating. I don't believe in forcing myself to eat foods I don't like although I will try anything at least once. There are lots of new foods I plan on trying, such as kale, and will add to my diet if I like them. I'm always looking for new recipes so that I can add healthy foods in new ways. Eating healthfully doesn't have to be a chore!
So who needs Devil Dogs?
