Oven fried chicken? I have never tried that, do you have a good recipe you will share?
You are just the teeniest bit older than me, mere months. And yes, why do you have a king size bed with no hubby and no dogs!!! And being only 5 1 !!! Makes no sense but I guess you could save on sheet washing, sleep on one side for a week, then on the other? Congrats on being the best veggie lover of all time.

I'm "trying"

Monday, May 02, 2011

My motivational SparkFriend CORKYTHEMOM always writes very inspiring and thought-provoking things. Recently she wrote "the only difference between try & triumph is a little umph!" I thought that was really great and it got me thinking about the word try.

To me there is doing or not doing. I feel that "trying" is another word for "not doing." Hope no one is offended by this; it's just how I feel. People say that they will "try" to do this program, they will "try" to exercise, they will "try" to eat right. I say, just DO it! This is not about being perfect, just sticking with it most of the time. It doesn't mean that we won't go backwards at times, eat too much, eat the wrong things, blow off the exercise. But we can DO this. We can make this a permanent new healthy lifestyle.

So, I am not "trying" to live more healthfully; I'm doing it. I'm choosing to eat fruits & vegetables instead of junk food, choosing to go to the gym instead of lazing on the couch, choosing to stay within my calorie range. I've made so much progress in my 4 months with SP and am much happier. I am determined to reach my goals and maintain my new lifestyle. I will be here for my friends as they are here for me, working towards reaching our goals & then maintaining them. Let's all DO this, together!

Great blog! It's the same when hearing 'I'm working on it' or 'I'll take a look at that.' (yeah, right, code for procrastination) DO is an action word, and it takes action to create change, otherwise we stay the same. We choose to DO the healthy choices. We used to DO the unhealthy choices. The action works either way~the healthy choices sure feel better!

Making the switch to healthy eating

Thursday, April 28, 2011

Not that long ago my DD came into my room & laid down on my bed (I'm a fortunate mom whose teenager still likes to talk to me & cuddle!) "What's that?" she asked. Well, to my horror, she had just spied the box of Devil Dogs I had hidden under my bench. She told me that she didn't eat those so I didn't have to keep them in my bedroom. What she didn't know was that I was hiding them so that she wouldn't see me eating them! That's right, I was a secret eater. I'd come home & stash the unhealthy food in a cabinet with my china (meaning a cabinet my DD never opened.) That was a big wake up call (plus not being able to fit into any of my clothes!) What was I doing? I vowed to stop the closet eating. If I wanted a Devil Dog I'd eat it in the kitchen; no more hiding food.

Next week will be my 4 month Sparkversary and what a difference in my eating habits! No more Devil Dogs or chips or cakes & cookies. I'm not depriving myself; I just don't want them. Tracking all my food has made me conscious of what I put in my body. I guess it helps that I like fruits & vegetables. It also helps to have a daughter who is very health conscious and wants to cut out all processed foods, which we are working towards.

What do I snack on now? I have a new favorite and highly recommend it! I mix one cup of plain Greek yogurt with 1/2 T of honey, 1 T of wheat germ or 1/8 cup of granola, sprinkle in some cinnamon and add whatever fruit I feel like eating such as 1/4 cup of blueberries & 1/2 cup of strawberries. Today I think I'll have some mango. This is so delicious, nutritious, and satisfying! Greek yogurt is more expensive because it takes 3x the amount of milk to make it but it's worth it. It's double the protein of regular yogurt so it keeps you full longer. You can also get Greek yogurt with the fruit already added but I really enjoy mixing up my own. My daughter loves this too and had it for dinner.

I think it's really important to take pleasure in what you're eating. I don't believe in forcing myself to eat foods I don't like although I will try anything at least once. There are lots of new foods I plan on trying, such as kale, and will add to my diet if I like them. I'm always looking for new recipes so that I can add healthy foods in new ways. Eating healthfully doesn't have to be a chore!

So who needs Devil Dogs?

Ha! I used to be a secret eater too. And i admit that I still am once in a great while. My favorite trick was to pick up some kind of treat each time I went shopping. Like a Butterfinger in the check out or pull into the drive-thru on my way home or grab a cookie or two at the coffee shop. It was a terrible habit but somehow I felt like I was winning because I was getting the sweets and junk food I wanted and hubby never knew. Am proud of you for breaking your secret food habit!!! I know it's not easy.

The Greek yogurt recipe sounds good, I might try that. I have plain in the house, right now. I buy plain and use it as a substitute for sour cream. Most of the time it gets used in my jalapeño poppers. I buy "fruit yogurt" to eat as yogurt.

I *love* that you're having it for dinner. I too don't have rules about certain foods for certain meals. I just go with what I'm in the mood for. I don't do many "rules" very good.

The word "Devil Dog" is making me chuckle; I've never heard that before. I don't think we have that in Chicago?

Congrats on 4 months coming up ... how cool is that?
Congrats on a great relationship with your DD.
Congrats on not hiding.

So who need Devil Dogs?
Not us my friend ... woo-hoo!!

Thank you for sharing; you're an inspiration.
Have a Terrific Thursday ... :-)

Good for you - and brave you for "fessing up" about the secret eating! My DH is a food hoarder. He doesn't have a weight problem and he doesn't eat in secret, but he hides food that he doesn't want to share (like your DD's original premise about the Devil Dogs). I think it goes back to some competitive thing between him and his brother when they were kids. He leaves his food in plain sight in the pantry when it's just me around (apparently I have never been "competition" for his junk), but if one of my kids are in the house, suddenly he starts creating secret stashes - and the funny thing is that it's usually for crap that no one else would eat anyway. I find jelly beans in his dresser drawer in our room, and don't even get me started on the food he stores in his car. If we go someplace together, it's a few minutes before he drives out of the garage to the driveway where I'm waiting - and I know it's because he's moving animal crackers, jelly beans, gum drops, PB crackers and the like off the passenger seat and stowing it some place in the back of the car. He also eats a lot of fruit for snacks, but doesn't feel compelled to hide it - thank goodness!

Thursday, April 07, 2011

The jeans almost falling off are definitely a big hint that I'm not as I was (and these jeans were more than painfully tight a few months ago.) This photo, of my & my DD taken on her 16th b-day on 12/21/10 definitely shows the progress I've made in my 13 weeks with SP.

I'm feeling like a new person and excited about the journey continuing with all my SP friends along the way. I put these photos on my Visual Motivator. I will never look like the 1st photo again!

I feel like a balloon at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, filled to bursting

Feeling so much stronger & happier! Thank you SP!
