I formed a team for my home area and am hoping to find people that would be on SparkPeople and would like to walk together.

Something that I never did on HHBFFH was to tell my story so this is what I posted on the SINY Members Team introduction as a new leader of this new team. I would love and thank you for any and all the feed back I could get, so here goes:

I have tried all sorts of diets since my teen years. My 1st diet was Weight Watcher. I then tried eating just fruit and cottage cheese. I tried the 500 calorie diet, the grapefruit diet, the cabbage diet etc. My weight went up and down between 115 to 145 into my early 20's. I had back trouble starting at 15 and it was hard to exercise to loose weight. When I tipped the scale at 147 and I could barely walk I joined Overeaters Anonymous. They had n extremely strict diet and you were never allowed to slip up or you would have to start over again. I went down to 108lbs quickly and maintained under 115 for 2 years following a somewhat balanced diet but no flour or sugar. It is not practical to live like that forever so eventually I slipped up and started to gain again.

My weight really got out of control when I had children. I went from 108 - 188. Then one day I began to get depressed. The weight kept climbing and the depression got worse. I don't know what happened to my body but In 1 year I went from 150 To 250 for my 40th Birthday. I now found out that maybe this happened because I have Hoshimoto's thyroiditis and Lupus which cause depression, weight gain and joint problem etc. etc. but I didn't find this out until late into my 50's So, when I turned 60 in January of 2014 I decided that all this had to change! I found SparkPeople and a new life began.

Now I've realized that fad diets only work for a while and then the weight comes back on when I can't stay on them any longer. That just doesn't work for a lifetime and a life style. I could barely move when I 1st started this in January but slowly I've changed the way I eat and am changing and strengthening my body. I've realized that it takes time to change life long bad habits. For the 1st time in my life I'm giving myself the right to take time to do that. I'm learning to love myself right where I'm at with healthy habits of moving my body every day a little more each day. I'm learning to eat healthy choices to nourish my body with things that I like that are good for me. I'm cutting down my calories slowly and not crash dieting to get off all my extra weight over night. I'm drinking 8+ glasses of water a day to flush out all the bad stuff. I'm learning that enough sleep HELPS to loose weight. And I'm learning that it's ok to enjoy life. It's taken me 5 months so far to make some changes and I've lost 15 lbs and 2 sizes! WhooHoo! I am also thanking The Lord for helping me to recreate myself and my life the way He had intended me to live, a full and productive, and fun filled life, PTL! It is happening and it can happen for you too!

    You should go back to weight watchers now. they have changed for the better. Now they are actually healthier, and they teach you all the stuff to stay thinner. it's not about eating, but the life style, and what to snack on, what's at every meal to give you 1 hours energy. They are the only ones pushing life style changes. I tired them two other times, and hated that they made me feel like I was eating too much cheese, and didn't know what to do. I have tried a million diets too. Spark's diabetic diet is even healthier than ww, so start their & look at their 100 calorie or higher snacks to get ideas. I wish you well with that group, but leading it will have you on this computer too much. Look out back aches. eva

Walking buddies

emoticon I'm wondering how to find walking buddies. I created a team for Staten Islanders but so far I'm the only team member! LOL emoticon

    Check with your Parks and Recreation, look in the newspaper to find already established teams, We have walkers at most of our malls but it is in the morning. Some of the malls are so big, and they are open late so you can walk there. I do that in the bad weather.....check at your church, etc. Hope you are successful my dear! Best wishes. emoticon

    All very good suggestions but I work in the daytime even in the summer but I'll keep looking. Thanks everyone for your suggestions and prayers. I just started the team a day ago. emoticon

  Watch what happens early in the morning in front of your house. Often Neighbors have a morning-walk routine. You might just ask them to join.

Moving ON!

When I first started in January I couldn't do any exercise type walking or other exercises. I started out by doing 2 & 3 minute chair exercises and would have to stop for that day. Each day I tried doing another minute if I could. Slowly I got more energy and movement. I then was able to start walking around the school yard where I work, 1 lap then 2, 3, and so on till I was doing 9 laps in 40 minute. I can't believe it but it's been happening.

Today we went on a field trip to a park. I walked around with the kids for 1 1/2 hours and then danced with the kids for 1/2 an hour. Five months ago if you told me I would be doing this I would have laughed at you. I can't believe that I did this today! May 23, 2014.

The weight is slowly coming off not as fast as I would like, when I would go on crazy no carb diets but I can see that as long as I keep pushing emoticon and keep moving forward and don't give up... emoticon and emoticon too! And that it can and will stay off.

My body is slowly getting stronger, has more stamina and is getting more flexible. We all can create a new person. I am becoming the New Me!

Gluten intolerance

I have figured out why my tummy has been so sick. I definitely can't eat ANYTHING with gluten in it. My body has been rebelling from my eating it, Pain, gas, hot and cold sweats, chills, burning, nausea! I thought I kept getting stomach viruses over and over but its got to be the gluten. I just can't tolerate the one food that I love! WHEAT! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

What is gluten you say? It is EVERYTHING made with wheat flour or rye or barley. Anything that has been baked, all pastas, cereals, most of the foods in restaurants. You also can't have things that don't have gluten but were made in the same factory with things that do have gluten. Gluten is the part of flour that is a protein chain. 30+ years ago people didn't have this problem. I grew up on pasta every night but now industry has changed the genetic code on wheat so that it would be gluten (protein) packed and people can't tolerate the change. Then if you buy say a tiny loaf of bread made of alternate grains to be gluten free it costs close to $6.00 as compared with a regular loaf about $1.60.

I've been on gluten overload. The suggested menu has all these gluten items to pick from and I've been trying to keep a balanced low calorie diet to not do any fad diet of no carbs but unfortunately I just can't eat gluten. I wish there was a way to make the suggested diet plan show a pick of only gluten free items. Then it wouldn't be so bad.

Then there's the other problem that gluten intolerance causes which is Lactose intolerance!
That's my other favorite foods, emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon and my most favorite food is CHEESE. Give me cheese and crackers over candy and cake any day. I just recently found out that egg yolks have caisson in it which is in all dairy products. I sure hope I'm not allergic to egg yolks too!

While talking about intolerance I can throw in the things I'm allergic to that I absolutely can't eat is emoticon FRESH pineapple and lobster and crabs. Thank God I'm still doing ok most of the time with emoticon (shrimp).

So that leaves me with meats, fish, and poultry, vegetables and most fruit. I can eat rice and oatmeal (I think) and not sure about corn. emoticon

I guess I should be grateful to God for the good things that I can eat but my human nature wants to cry. It is sooo hard to give up all the things that you love!

    A big change for you, but a good one. You will feel so much better when you get on a gluten free regiment. But I agree, it must be very hard to give up all those foods that you absolutely loved to eat. So far my body has not complained about gluten. I have a lot of friends who are gluten intolerant though. And yes it is very hard for them to go to restaurants and find things on the menus that they can eat. Plus the expense at the grocery store for gluten free products is ridiculous.

    You will find a lot of people are going gluten free. I bake most of the gluten free items for our church coffee hour after the service. We have several that need it. Please take a moment and look at this site. The gluten free Digest from There is everything you would want to eat with a gluten free version of the recipe. ( Rice pasta, white bread (using rice flour) all kinds of cookies, etc. ) I feel better not eating so much gluten.

  It's gonna be an adventure until you figured out which products you can have and which ones to pass and how to stay in a reasonable budget at the same time. But if you came that far, I am confident that you can do it with no further problems (other than getting used to the new 'menu'. Good Luck and: Glad you're doing better.

    Glad to hear you are feeling better and I am sure you will soon prefer eating the foods you can eat without tummy upsets - its just a bit of a mourning period for you. Yes, we certainly can mourn over foods that used to comfort us. It is true, but this too will pass. You have an honest reaction, but I am sure you will come around soon. Blessings to you. Thankfully, you have the God of all comfort to lean on and to be strengthened by.

Wedding in the future

My daughter just told me today that she may be getting engaged and married in a year to a year and a half. I need to loose 90lbs in that time to go from 225-135. Is this at all possible?
I have a $900 gown sitting in my closet for many years waiting for just this. It's a size 14. I don't have that kind of money to waste. So, is it a possible goal? emoticon

    How exciting for you - it is a known fact that if you have a goal in mind, it helps to achieve it, if you also set goals along the way. Reward yourself as you achieve the mini goals along the way to your main goal.

  I think you may fit into it even if you only loose half of the amount, but making it all the way would be true icing on the cake (low fat, of course!)
Think about what great gift your slim new you would be for your daughter's wedding pictures. It will be a picture you will enjoy for more than just one reason!

    Just do it, my friend.
You have a goal.
Make a plan.
Implement the plan.
Keep your eye on the goal.
You can do it...I did.

If you go to my SparkPage, you will see a pic of me and my daughter on her wedding day. I purchased the dress I am wearing 7 months before the wedding, and I couldn't even try it on b/c it wouldn't GO on my body.

Your daughter's wedding will be a glorious event in your life! Enjoy!
