Spark Friends...

I need your help and / or opinion.

Here's the situation...

I have a mean dog. Really... we got her about a year ago from the shelter, and we have had some serious problems. We've tried to get her trained, but she HATES kids. I have resorted to just locking her up when there are kids over, but my kids can't really even walk her around the block. She bites kids.

The dog is really good now with my own kids, but with any kid she doesn't know if they try to pet her she WILL bite them. Not bad bites yet, but she has broken the skin. She's only bitten 3-4 kids, but that is 3-4 too many.

So... tonight... my sister came over to just pick up some things she had forgotten. When I know kids are coming, I always lock up the dog. Well... my sister and I were chatting for just a minute. She was just going to quickly pick up her things and leave. Well... SHE started chatting (I'm serious it's her) and her kids came running in from the car. Well... I wasn't even thinking about the dog, I was just listening to my sister talk, and anyway... bottom line the kids went in to play with my kids and the dog BIT her 5 year old daughter. It wasn't really a bad bite, but it definitely was a BITE...

I am so upset... I don't know what to do. I of course LOVE my dog, but I always am worried she is really going to hurt someone, and if she did I could not live with myself.

What should I do??? It would break my kids heart and my heart if we had to take our dog away. I just don't know what to do. I'm really upset.

But... the good news... I usually would absolutely EAT over this. I did do a minor no / no... My doctor told me I could start run / walking... Ok... I just ran for 20 minutes. But it didn't hurt. BLAH!!!

Any, ANY, advice whether I want to hear it or not would be greatly appreciated.

I am so sorry to hear about your dog. If you decide to keep the dog, (and there are some good reasons to try to find the dog another home that will not have a constant flow of children in and out) I would definitely follow the advice about the insurance. Also you might do a little internet search about the applicable laws related to dog bite liability. In our state, once the owner knows about the dog's propensity to bite, there is a heightened obligation on behalf of the owner. If you are weighing your options it might be good to know what your risks are.

I'm a litigator and I've handled only one dog mauling case (dogs v. Morgan colt). That was enough. My heart goes out to you. emoticon

Oh Netty, I'm so very sorry to hear about your dog. It's absolutely heart breaking. I don't have a good suggestion for you, but I can tell you a story about a friend of mine. She got a dog from the pound, rescued it, loved it, and he was a biter...but she didn't have kids, so it was okay...until she married a guy who already had kids. After a long, very difficult decision making process, she was able to find a home for him. He now lives happily on a farm and she can go visit him. ...she still hasn't gotten another dog, because she says he's her baby.

My heart goes out to you. Please let us know what you decide to do. We are all here for you.

If you are going to keep the dog my advise is to make sure you have some good Liability coverage on you r home owners insurance. Maybe even check into an umbrella policy to specifically cover the dog. You do not want to end up bankrupt b/c of a dog that you probablly paid less then $100 for at the pound.

whatever decision you make i know it will be hard but you have to think of other poeples kids.

Netty, so sorry to read about your dog worries! Your situation obviously requires immediate action, otherwise you'll worry yourself into the ground or your dog will attack another child or one of your own kids. Unfortunately one of the drawbacks of adopting a shelter dog, you really don't know how bad the behavioral baggage will be. It sounds like your dog has already had a full year to re-enforce whatever negative problems were there to begin with.

(Have you seen any DOG WHISPERER episodes??? Caesar Milan is a genious with dogs. He has taken dogs like yours and WORSE and trained the owners to handle the dog properly. But it takes tremendous work, time and dedication on the part of the owner.)

This is obviously a really tough decision for you and your family. In the end, whatever you decide, I'm sure that decision will be the best possible one for both your dog and your family.

Take care and good luck!

Hey, I went through a similar situation with my own dog several months ago. (You're welcome to scroll back through some of my blogs if you want to read about it. ) She was aggressive toward strangers and children, so we kept her penned her up to keep her from hurting someone. Everytime we took her somewhere I lived in constant fear that some well-meaning person would reach to pet her, despite us asking them not to, and that she'd bite them -which meant that eventually, we really didn't take her anywhere.

It was a horrible situation for both my family (because we lived in constant worry about the dog biting someone) and for the dog itself (not a great quality of life to be sequestered like that.) One day, she attacked our other dog, and to keep her from killing the other dog right there in front of me, I had to disentangle them - and she ended up getting ahold of me, too.

In the end, after much soul-searching, I ended up taking her to the humane society. We have neighbor kids who often wander into our backyard, and repairmen crossing through, and I just couldn't face the guilt of being responsible for someone getting hurt because I couldn't be honest with myself about my dog's aggressive tendencies.

You say she's already bitten 3-4 kids, so you know this is a continuing behavior and not just a fluke... If the dog bites someone and does serious damage, you can be held legally responsible for the victim's hospital expenses... I know you are in a very difficult situation. I'm sure you and your family love your dog very much. You know your dog better than anyone else who'll offer advice, though. I'm sure you'll make the right decision for you and your family.

My heart aches for you. I know how you love your dog...but your kids are important to and so are other kids. Maybe there is something the vet can give your dog to calm her down? Maybe change her mood? Is there a physical reason for her biting? I don't know what to say. But biting is not good, even if it's your own kids or a slight break in the skin...that is still very dangerous and if anyone was really hurt..well, you can only imagine the pain that would follow not to mention a law suit. Maybe someone else has another idea but I would talk to the vet for sure. emoticon

Hurts Soooo... Good...

Monday, July 21, 2008

Yesterday I was able to get out on my bike and ride... Woo~Hoo that was really exciting. My feet went a little numb, and I had to stop and check them to make sure it wasn't really anything. It wasn't. I just have really bad circulation. That's why I hate skiing in the winter with DH... My feet FREEZE.

So... today... I was able to go to the gym. My PT taught me a bunch of new stretches and we did some strength training for the knee. That felt great!

Then... I got to go to Chiro~Lane, and he has a massage therapist in his office. He said if my muscles were aching to get just my legs massaged by her. Well...

Oh My... It was the BEST!!! I have been to several massage therapists, and she by far was #1. She rocked. It hurt a little, but it was the "good" hurt. So... good hurt. I am hoping that it really does the trick. Although my muscles really weren't sore this AM.

The other interesting / funny thing that happened today. I LOVE my swimming for cardio team and my Triathlete team. So... our tri~team hasn't really had a leader, and I've been helping get the threads started. So... the leader asked me to be the co~leader. That's fun!!! I just want to stay motivated and that will definitely help.

The other thought I had today was... if my knee isn't feeling totally ready for my Aug. 23 Olympic Tri. I might just want to drop down to the sprint tri. I almost just want to sign up for that, although it just isn't quite the same. Plus... the last one was the first one I did, and I really want to see if my body is healed. Who knows... I'll try to be smart and listen to my body. I really would like it to last a while longer. LOL!!! So... I better take care of it NOW~ Plus all this doctor / chiro SH~Tuff is EXPENSIVE... I can't afford to have my knee hurt again.

Running Outfit

Saturday, July 19, 2008

Ok... I got a sleeveless running shirt. And... it's tight. I never wear shirts like this running. I hope I'm ready, because it cost $38. That's a lot more than a little t-shirt. But... It's a dry fit, and I am hoping I could use it in my tri's under my wetsuit and no longer wear a swimming suit during my tri's.

I got up this morning and hurried down to Wal-Mart. Teacher friends...I need you these next couple of weeks. I go back to work July 28. UGggg.... I'm so not motivated. But... going to Wal-Mart this AM actually motivated me a little, because I bought 200 notebooks for $10. Can you believe it? They were $.05 each. That actually got me really excited. I LOVE teaching but it's always such a big transition from having my time off to teaching again.

After Wal-Mart... I hit the gym. I didn't really have a set plan of what I wanted to do. I brought my swimming stuff in case I wanted to swim. I posted yesteday somewhere that I am a more go~with~the flow exerciser. I usually am! I just want to exercise and make it enjoyable. Well... this week wasn't super enjoyable. My swim when my calf muscle cramped hurt so badly. So... today... I did a few minutes on the elliptical to warm up, then I stretched out my ITB on the foam roller (foamie).

I did some strength training for about 30 minutes. Very gently and easy for my knee.

Then... I started back on the elliptical and only went for like 3 minutes, and I was like I don't want to do this. So... I hit the pool. Started swimming and about 15 minutes into my swim I just thought. I want to play. SO... I started doing bouncing butterfly. It's where you jump off the bottom of the pool and break through the surface and do a butterfly stroke. IT's so fun. The I just jogged in the pool. Did a lot of stretching. Some backstroke. NO BREASTSTROKE!!!! I am too worried this will hurt my knee. Just jumped around like a little froggy. It was so fun.

Anyway... I need to remember... ENJOY... have fun with my workouts, eating, family, etc...

New Shoes...

Friday, July 18, 2008

That's a picture of one of the pairs of shoes I got today. I went to Chiro~Lane, and he had my orthotics... Woo~Hoo... So I was able to take them to the running store and get some new shoes.

The funniest part was... he also brought out my old Asics! LOL!!! The only difference was they were a half a size larger. So... maybe that's part of the prob. Ummmm... I did lose my baby toenail last month, and I have some blisters that are pretty much callused now. DUH!!!

I also got a foam roller. They had one at the running store. I was so excited! I came home though and laid on it. OUCH!!! That thing KILLS! But... the pain is worth it. I want to run so BADLY. More than swimming or biking ... I want to run. Chiro~Lane said try, try, try to give my knee another week or two before I run, but I had to get in 1 mile today. Shhhh.... Just had to try out the shoes.

Let us know how the new shoes break in! I don't think I've ever bought Adidas for running shoes, so I'm interested to hear what you think.

Day 1 PT

Thursday, July 17, 2008

How cute... pink dumb~bells! I like them!

So... Day 1 with my personal trainer. It was AWESOME! I learned how to use the foam roller. There was the nicest guy at the gym yesterday trying to show me how to roll my thigh down the thing, and I am so uncoordinated with stuff like that, yoga stuff lol, just moving my body and stretching it, I couldn't figure it out. So... PT helped me, patiently, figure it out. He had to show me a few times before I got it. He finally got 2 different ones so that he could be doing it while I was.

He was so nice to me! I guess it's standard that they take all your measurements. Which, I don't know about you, but I don't like doing it and being reminded. I have a lot of loose skin on my tummy with stretch marks. LOL! He had this pincher thing that was to test my body fat % LOL! I had to show a guy other than my husband my freakn' tummy! He was so nice telling me that I was really toned and that the loose skin meant nothing when compared to body fat %.

So... he gave me multiple stretches and routines that I could work on to strengthen not only my IT~Band and knee, but all my leg muscles. I don't know why... but I'm that idiot that thought running / doing the elliptical was strengthening my leg muscles. It wasn't! It was just using them and not really building the muscles in my legs. He explained it much better than I can. SO... I am really Excited! I've got to get my bootie in every other day and continue working. I have my next session on Monday.
