Spark Book and Daily Reflections

I bought the Spark awhile ago. I actually have a real copy and a copy on my phone. Today, I discovered the book - bonus site and it motivated me to actually read and maybe apply some of the things I am learning from it.

I decided to try to recruit a few people to read the Spark Book with me in-person. I am really hoping this will work out. A few members from the Utah Spark Team and a few friends I know that want to get going on Spark-People. Have any of you read the book or met up with fellow Spark-Buddies in your community? I would love to hear your experiences with both.

REFLECTIONS:

Almost done with Day 4 Binge Free. SO *EXCITED* about this. I am so HOPEFUL that this is the LAST time I have to start again. But, I am also a realist a know it might happen again, and I am prepared to ask for forgiveness and get back on my feet ASAP. For now, definitely focused on the positive. 4 DAYS Binge free and eating healthy, exercising, and feeling great.

What worked today:

Going down to the basement to journal, read, and stretch. I am okay with going to OA meetings, but I am definitely looking for other things too.

Ran 4 miles on the treadmill today and felt great.

Hoping for another solid day tomorrow. I go back to work as a teacher. First real day back since Dec. 21. I taught 3 students last week from 8:30-11:30 and that was really fun. But, tomorrow all 29 will be back all-day long. LOVE IT!!! I have the best job in the universe.

Hope all my Spark-Buddies had a wonderful day too.

    I do not have the book, but one of the team's I am in meets twice a week to walk together. Some also participate in organized (like 5/10k ) walks/runs. It is great! The team is incredibly supportive and is a nice push to get moving.

    I'm jealous that you love your job!!! That is a wonderful thing!

I have the Spark book, and I have met Sparkers IRL. It is great - one lives about 60 miles from me and we have traveled to out of town races together, done a 100 mile relay together (with 4 other people) and she has spent the night before a race. There is another one who lives about 30 minutes away and we have met up before races as well. I have also met other Sparkers in big groups after races. A lot of fun to put the face with the name, especially since a lot of them know your deepest darkest secrets! It's like an instant bond!

    Good luck with your book club - maybe come prepared with some questions in case the discussion stalls. And congrats on being binge free, I know how difficult that can be.

    I haven't read the Spark with a book club, but as with most things, it's the doing that counts.

Daily Visualization:

Today, picture yourself at your goal weight, working out effortlessly alongside your former self. You see your former self struggling with exercises that have now become easy. How does it feel to see yourself on both sides of your journey? What habits can you work on today to get one step closer to your future, improved self?

*Interesting Thoughts Today*
- This is my STRENGTH
- I understand this and am so PROUD of my exercise accomplishments and my ability to stay exercising moderately.

How does it feel to be on both sides?
PLEASE realize I have not always been an exercise person. It was a long, slow process to get to exercise balance. Both with EXCESS exercise and ZERO exercise.

MY advice to myself and others out there trying to find CONSISTENT, MODERATE exercise:
- Be PROUD of any and all exercise you accomplish each day.
- Find exercises that you enjoy and start out slow and easy and build a little each week.
- DO NOT complain each time you exercise. FIND the positive.
- You truly FEEL so much better after
- For me, I only allow myself 1 really hard workout each week where I feel sore afterwards.
- I have 1-2 workouts a week that I do intervals and push medium hard.
-My other 4-5 workouts are medium - easy effort.

*Remember*
Everyone's exercise "balance" is so DIFFERENT. Some people look at my marathon training as excessive and too much. BUT... I truly follow a beginning marathon plan and train at a medium effort. Last year, I finished the Ogden Marathon following this plan and qualified for the Boston Marathon. I beat my goal time by 10 minutes.

Find your exercise balance and ENJOY each second you are ABLE to exercise.

I'm glad to hear that you have support through things like O.A. I'm sure that's helpful.

Secondly, I totally agree with you on the balance... what seems crazy excessive CAN be relative, but if you are the type of person who has trouble with balance, it's important to make sure that you are in balance! Sometimes Larry likens me to an alcoholic who sneaks off to drink first thing in the AM... except instead of vodka, I'm drinking the miles!

Lastly, I knew you had qualified for Boston, but I didn't realize with such a big margin!

I hope to qualify at my next marathon. It's nice to know that you followed a plan and did the work and MADE IT! Gives me some hope!

    For me, the difference between my active self and my inactive self is that, when active, my body feels strong and healthy and becomes a vehicle for all the fun activities and cool adventures I could have. When inactive, my body becomes a weight dragging me down. Even the smallest things ... getting up to change laundry, doing something with the kids ... became a CHORE. I will not go there again!

    I'll never be fast or fit enough to qualify for Boston (doubt I will ever attempt a full marathon, half distance is plenty challenge for me), so I am doubly in awe of your accomplishment.

Day 3

What's Working:

*Mental and Planning*
- Logging in to Spark-People in the morning... planning the day.
- Following the Spark-Coach Steps

*Fitness*
- Exercising at least 30 minutes in the morning

*Nutrition*
- Eating a Healthy Breakfast with FATS and Protein
- Eating Healthy Snack with FATS and Protein
- Eating a Healthy Lunch with FATS and Protein
- Eating a 2nd Healthy Snack with (you got it) FATS and Protein

***This 2nd snack about 3:00 I might need to add a few more calories to or add more fat to my lunch. A little more udo's oil or something. I feel like I am getting too hungry between Lunch and 2nd Snack.

- Eating a Healthy Dinner and not being scared because I haven't "saved" a bunch of calories for late night snacking.

LATE AFTERNOON: Still having a little bit of a hard time around 4:00. I get anxious and start obsessing about food.

*Mental* Boredom* Anxiety after Work* or when I am supposed to be having "Down" Time

What has worked:
Being with friends and just "chatting".
Spark-Page surfing and posting to message boards will work too.
O.A. Meetings
O.A. Out-Reach Phone Calls
Going to the exercise room and just stretching and doing my own "Yoga" and meditating.

So, I am so happy that I have gone 3 days with 0 binges. I thank God... thank you, thank you, thank you... The feelings really have felt relieved as I have prayed and meditated.

I believe I am establishing new HEALTHY - Habits, and I am so hopeful that this is the LAST time I have to "Start-OVER" This is IT!!! Keep writing about what is working and get out of the bondage of "SELF" and Self-ish-ness.

Daily Visualization:

Picture five things you want in your life, whether they are people, goals, experiences or things. How will reaching your small goals today help you achieve those dreams, too?

5 Things I want IN my life:

People = Family, Friends, Students
Goals = Balance / Contentment / Spiritual Fulfillment
Experiences = *** I think this important and something I haven't spent a lot of time thinking about. What kind of experiences would I like in my life?
Things = Not sure I want "things" but just to be financially able to not worry about the things I really need. Although... It might be fun to set a goal of some- "thing" I would like to financially work toward.
Physical Health = Balance nutritionally and physically. Strong and Healthy Woman.

HOW is what I am doing today helping me achieve the things I want in my life?

Specific things I am doing today to help me achieve the things I want in my life:

Spending TIME with family and friends.
Finding Balance through learning and trial and error. Being able to honestly reflect on what I am doing to create balance in my life and learn from my failures.
Spiritually praying and giving thanks each day.
Financially working on saving more and spending less.
Physical Health = Eating Plan and Exercise Plan in moderation.

Overall, I feel pretty good today. I am hopeful and excited about the future and confident I can reach my goals. I am on day 3 of no bingeing and very proud of that. I changed my ticker to # of days without over-eating.

Binging or Bingeing

So... I've sadly been writing about bingeing or binging a lot lately, and it has been really bugging me whether you spell binging or bingeing (both seem to be correct) and here was the definition and spelling:

binge (binj)
n.
1. A drunken spree or revel.
2.a. A period of unrestrained, immoderate self-indulgence.
b. A period of excessive or uncontrolled indulgence in food or drink: an eating binge.

binged, bing·ing or binge·ing, bing·es
v.
1. To be immoderately self-indulgent and unrestrained: "The story is like a fever dream that a disturbed and imaginative city-dweller might have after binging on comics" (Lloyd Rose).
2. To engage in excessive or uncontrolled indulgence in food or drink.
[From dialectal binge, to soak.]

binger
n.
Synonyms: binge, fling, jag2, orgy, spree
These nouns denote a period of uncontrolled self-indulgence: a gambling binge; had one last fling before beginning a new job; a crying jag; an eating orgy; a shopping spree.

OK... EVEN MORE REASON TO STOP BINGEING OR BINGING HOWEVER YOU WANT TO SPELL IT. LoL!!!

    I love it! I am a first grade teacher and have become a horrible speller. I always say I was so much smarter and could spell so much better when I taught 3rd graders. emoticon
