Celebrating My 2nd Year Sparkiversary Today!

Friday, December 27, 2013

I love Spark People and am so grateful I found the book and the site two years ago. It's funny, but clearly I am motivated by Spark Points (just reached level 12); logging in daily (105 days in a row this time); seeing fitness minutes increase and reading success stories and blogs. I also appreciate the articles from Spark Coaches, fitness videos and recipes.

Confession time: I recently discovered the blogs section a few weeks ago when I realized I needed to 'do more' to obtain points to reach level 12 (2500 points or something crazy like that!). I also needed a place to use my Spark Goodie points so had to find people to give them to! I realized that blogging is just a space to share thoughts, musings, ideas, challenges, successes - even recipes and photos. Sometimes lots of people will read and respond and sometimes people blog just for themselves -- and it is OK either way.

The part of Spark People I have yet to really embrace are the friendships and connections and that is what I hope to work on in year 3. I 'join' Spark Teams but don't often go back and read and contribute. Then I join different ones and the cycle continues. This year I'm going to try to pick 2 or 3 teams and really make a commitment to show up.

Over a period of years prior to SP I lost the weight I had been struggling with (down 5 sizes, then up 1 to where I am today). I now have 1 size to go again, potentially, though now I am concentrating more on fitness (recovering from painful injuries) and health and less on the # of lbs on the scale. I've also had a shift philosophically that moved from believing in a simplistic version of "it's just math: calories in vs. calories out" to understanding the impact of what the quality of food I am eating (now mostly whole foods, lots of greens, omega 3s) as well as the impact of hormones, stress, and what is happening mentally. I feel like I am on the right track and am hopeful and optimistic.

Thanks Spark People for the incredible resources, encouraging people, and overall positive sparkiness!

PS: I really love the new look of the site -- it works much better for me!

    Congrats on your anniversary!

The great thing about the SP community is that you can participate as much or as little as you have time for. Glad that you're discovering more about SP!

It Works! Losing Weight During the Holidaze!

Friday, January 04, 2013

I don't know why I am surprised, but I actually lost weight during the holidays this year.

I lost 0.5 lb between Xmas and New Year's (while at my in-laws) and another 0.5 lb New Year's week. My goal is 0.5 per week and this is the first weight I lost lost in a very long time!

I shouldn't be surprised at all. I did what I know works:

I logged into Spark People every day and logged food, fitness, read motivating stories and message boards. I even posted once or twice. Spark People became my first and last activity of the day instead of Facebook.

I logged into Spark Coach which has become a big help to me. I'm not sure if it is the content or the logging in, but I'm not going to question it!

I worked out - despite having a rotator cuff injury and doing intense physical therapy...I found out I still have two working legs and one working arm. I even went to the gym once while at my in-laws in another state. I found new types of exercise (water walking was one).

I learned that my normal calorie count is at the high end of the range I need to lose weight. That led to the realization that I need to clock more fitness minutes to make this work.

Finally, my friend joined SP this week and it feels good to have a buddy I see almost every day. Thank you Leah!

I'm looking forward to great energy and health and getting strong and fit again this year!

Cupcake Wars

Thursday, January 03, 2013

So, at the rec center doing a treadmill workout. On the TV in front of me is The Food Channel's 'Cupcake Wars'. I watched the show calculating how many minutes to go eat a gluten free cupcake. I decided it was probably at least 90 so eating salad instead!

Funny! I always end up watching Food Network when I'm on the treadmill at the gym! emoticon Somthing about watching cooking shows keeps me from fixating on the time/distance display on the treadmill.

Trying new things

Thursday, October 04, 2012

I tried 2 new classes this week (piloxing and a dance class) in addition to my usual boxing workouts. It was a gym new to me - and felt good to know I now have new options on the days I don't work out with my trainer.

working out on vacation

Monday, June 18, 2012

For the first time in my life I pre-scheduled personal training sessions at my vacation destination and my first appointment was today. While he wasn't my trainer of 7 years I got an awesome, sweaty boxing workout with another one scheduled for Wednesday ~ sticking to my regular workout plan.

I am feeling really proud of myself right now! I learned something big and will schedule sessions on future trips.
