Don't be afraid to make mistakes!

This quote was in my Sparkpeople Healthy Reflection email this morning.

I think that as humans we are so afraid to fail at anything, that sometimes we forget to even try. We think it's better to not even put ourselves out there than to try our best even if we fall short.
Do you think that those that have had success have first not failed? That's how you learn what works and what doesn't. This can be applied to all aspects of our lives, especially our journey to our healthier and happier US. I often hear people make resolutions and say, " THIS IS THE NEW ME." There is nothing new about you except that you've changed your mentality.

You no longer are willing to sit in the corner and watch others go after what they want while you think you can never achieve it. You're out there fighting with the best of them, making those mistakes along the way and learning from them.
You are no longer willing to shy away from voicing your opinions or ideas because even if they are silly, then maybe someone will at least get a laugh from them.

So my advice for everyone this beautiful fall week is to get out there and try. Don't ever be afraid to fail. You can learn so much from making mistakes that you should never be afraid to make them.

    You are right, a lot of us are afraid! and also I think that we focus to much on the whole picture and the amount of weight we need to lose and it seems insurmountable. But it isn't, we just have to look at it in segments, small goals.

I enjoyed this blog and your attitude!

Things that have changed since joining Sparkpeople

emoticon I love this site so much. I love telling people about it and seeing them enjoy the benefits of such great tools and resources available for free online. Chris Downie and Coach Nicole.... I never met you... but I'll just make you honorary BFFs. emoticon

Changes that I've made since joining:

- I track my food. I no longer mindlessly stuff my face because I know when I see those awful calorie counts staring back at me, I'm going to have to face the guilt that I put way too much junk into my body.

- I drink more water than I ever have in my entire life. I used to think that I'd never get used to drinking water. It was just so bleh tasting and I could have a high calorie, sugary soda, juice, or iced tea instead. Little did I know that those sugary sodas were not only making me fat, but putting me into a prediabetic state and wrecking havoc on my kidneys.

- I'm more excited about fitness. I love to take walks. This is something I still need to make great strides with, but at least I'm at the starting point. Before, I never wanted to do more than take a car ride to somewhere scenic. Now I ride my bike or go on hikes. ME?! Yes me. I've gotten my lazy butt in gear.... now I just have to take it up a notch.

-I'm more tolerant and positive than I ever have been. I used to fly off the handle and get stressed out at any little thing. If you were disrupting my routine, you were disrupting my life. Now I try to breathe, realize that flexibility is key. Life will throw you curveballs constantly. It's up to you to hit them out of the park! My fiance just recently lost his job. Before I would have been hysterical, now I tell my self to just take it one day at a time.

- I shop at healthier stores. Trader Joes is a godsend. I've switched from whole milk, to skim milk, to now soy milk. I don't need the extra calories.

- I cook with olive oil. It makes everything taste better and it's a good fat.

There are a bunch of other things, but I'm still at the beginning of what I hope to be a fascinating and life changing process.
I love the support system of SP and hope that someday I can be a positive role model and motivator that many of you are for me.

    I was just thinking the other day about the unexpected benefits of SparkPeople. Like you, I've becoming more patient and tolerant since using spark. I think I've become a better friend and more caring about people in general. I think it's from being offered and providing unconditional support.

Things that make me smile....

My puppy, Gatsby! Look at that smile. Now does that not just bring a smile to your own face?

My brother and new sister-in law. Married in Sept.

Bumble from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. It's becoming that time of year again. I have Bumble ornaments, a singing Bumble, and now I saw that Build-a Bear has this. So cute!

My Juicy Couture Pave Starfish sandals. It's not the season for them anymore, but I love that I got them for a steal on ebay!

My other puppy, Nico voted on Election Day. Not really, but we can pretend he did. Right?

A Day at the Beach with my dogs.

My relationship with the man I love. 7 years and going strong. I hope that we can still get married when our financial situation improves.

There are a multitude of other things that make me smile. There are so many things to be thankful for.

Trouble Goal

So part of my program tells me to journal about a goal I'm having trouble achieving or a part of my regime I'm having a hard time sticking to.

My trouble goal is doing 30 minutes of exercise a day. Sometimes I'm great at doing this by taking my dogs for two walks a day. Other times, I'm tired from work and have my fiance take them for walks. Sometimes I'm great at working up early to do some yoga and some stretching. Other times I just want to relax and watch the morning news before I have to work a 9 or 10 hour day.

Sometimes I'm all gung ho and other times I just feel like I can't muster up the energy. So my question is how do you kick yourself in the butt and make yourself do what you need to do to keep up with the healthy lifestyle?
How do you tell yourself that choosing exercise over sitting and relaxing is the way to go? I realize that often times exercise can help your body get more energy and can help you sleep better, so how do I get that through to the inner me that screams, " But I don't wanna!"

How do you all deal with your trouble goals and what are they?

    Wow, what a great question. My trouble goal is watching what I eat. I know that to obtain good health, you really need to exercise AND watch your intake. Although I exercise quite a bit, I've maintained for sometime now. I know that if I didn't exercise, I would gain instead of maintain. I think my commitment to exercise goes alot to the ladies who I workout with. We are committed to each other to meet up and get a good workout. Perhaps you should join us sometime or get a workout buddy, but make sure that the workout buddy is as committed to the cause as you are.

  I'm afraid that I'm in the same boat as you! I'm dropping the pounds, I've lost 16 of them since mid august, and I know that I probably would have lost many more pounds then that if I would just get off my rear and move....Walk...go to the gym....anything....but I just can't motivate myself to do it! I'll be watching your blog to see if anyone can give us some good advise!!!
