Little Victories in a Large Battle

Sunday, October 21, 2012

I can't believe that it's already time for another weekly progress report.

1. Lose ten pounds.

My net loss since starting this goal is 3.2 pounds. I'm one-third of the way to my goal for this season! I met and exceeded my mini-goal to lose one pound this week.

2. Get 1000 minutes of exercise.

I'm up to 454 minutes, almost half way already! I was only able to make two visits to my fitness center this week, but they were very productive. In my continuing battle to overcome the elliptical trainer, I completed a ten minute session earlier this week. After that workout, I realized that part of the difficultly is that I'm focusing entirely on an arbitrary amount of time when I get on the machine (and moaning and groaning about how slowly it goes by).
Yesterday, I took a different approach. I set the machine for a 30 minute session, which I knew was beyond my ability right now but would carry me through without having to reset machine or worry about the timer. Then I turned on some music, covered up the timer, and went for it. Instead of focusing on the minutes left, I paid attention to how my body felt and did some slow/fast interval work. When I was tired and felt like I needed to stop, I checked the timer for the first time since setting it. The result: an 18 minute session! I am delighted.

Moving Right Along

Sunday, October 14, 2012

This week has gone by so quickly that it's been a blur. The goals are still works in progress, but things are moving in the right direction, at least.
1. Lose ten pounds.

The scale moved in the downward direction this week for a change! I still have a ways to go to hit my goal, but I'm at least moving the right way at the moment.

2. Get 1000 minutes of exercise.

Minutes so far: 393! This is fantastic considering I've had a flare-up of an old injury that limits the amount of impact exercises I can do. I've had to cut out almost all of my treadmill work for now, but I am slowly making friends with the elliptical machine. We've come to an agreement that if I increase my workout length 30 to 60 seconds each visit, it won't leave me laying on the floor in a pile of rubbery limbs. I'm up to seven minute sessions with no significant after effects. I was also given a wonderful piece of advice to stretch well after my workout to avoid the kinds of muscle pain and stiffness I had after my first session.

I'm going to keep on keeping on this week. My mini-goals are to lose one pound, get in 25 minutes on the elliptical, walk at least 60, and start some circuit training. Go me!

Checking In

Sunday, October 07, 2012

It's been a busy week, but I know that I need to keep myself on track here. This week's updates are...

1. Lose ten pounds.

No progress to report this week. I haven't been keeping up with my nutrition journal as I should and it shows. The scale and I are not on speaking terms today.

2. Get 1000 minutes of exercise.

This week I had a showdown with the elliptical trainer at my fitness center. It won a brief five minute battle. My calves were the only casualties to report... they hurt for three days after the workout. The good news is that I'm up to 272 minutes of exercise, which means I'm already 1/4 of the way to my goal.

On the agenda for the coming week: Get back to tracking food every day. Put in at least 90 minutes on the treadmill, have another go at the elliptical (maybe 6 minutes this time?), and check into some strength training exercises. And finally, get the scale moving back in the right direction!

Good luck with your goals. The elliptical can be a challenge but after a couple of months, you should be able to hop on and go for as long as you want. When I first got mine, I thought perhaps I wasted my money because it is hard, but now I can go for 45 to 50 minutes depending on the day. emoticon emoticon

Updates

Sunday, September 30, 2012

Last week I posted two goals for the fall season and it's time to check in on those...

1. Lose ten pounds.
emoticon
I said last week that my starting point was 210.6 and of course, the next day's weigh in showed a weight of 213.8. Unfortunately, water weight sometimes plagues me and this is one of those times. The good news is that I've dropped back to 212 with this week's weigh in. Still a bit over my starting point, but that's okay - you can't win them all.
I've done a terrible job of nutrition tracking this week, so that will need a little more attention this week.

Now on to what went right this week...

2. Get 1000 minutes of exercise.

I did something this week that I haven't done in several years- went to a public fitness center and worked out. Maybe it's just me, but I always used to measure myself against the other people working out around me - people who were inevitably thinner, more fit, more athletic, healthier, happier, etc. It's a hard lesson to learn, to measure our progress against where we've come from instead of where someone else is.

Yet, I did it... went not once but four times to the fitness center. Instead of finding it intimidating as I usually do, it was actually soothing to get into the rhythm of walking on a treadmill. I set the machine to my normal walking pace and found myself carrying on conversations with my neighbors. I can remember a time in my life when I was not physically able to do both of those things at the same time. I still have a long way to go to hit my goals, but the fact that I was able to put in 217 minutes on the treadmill this week is just amazing to me. That's right.... I got in over 3 1/2 hours of exercise in this week. I'm just a little tiny bit proud of myself right now. :)

Restart, Reset, Redo, and Just Reduce

emoticon Again?!?!

I've fallen off and jumped back on this particular bandwagon so many times that it's almost embarrassing. Even so, I know that I keep much better tabs on my weight, exercise, and nutrition when I track them here. So, picking back up again after quite awhile away.

It's the first day of autumn today, so I'm going to set a couple of goals for myself for the season:
1. Lose ten pounds. - I don't think this is a lot considering I'm allowing myself a three month period to do it. My current weight: 210.6 pounds. Okay, maybe I should make that lose 10.7 pounds so that I can start the new year under 200. :)
2. Get 1000 minutes of exercise. - Again, this isn't a lot, but it's more than I've been doing. What do you know... I already have 15 minutes down. 985 to go!

That's it, just two goals for now. I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.
