Down We Go

Wednesday, May 01, 2013

Another 3 lbs gone this week, which brings me under the 250 mark. That makes a total of 7.4 lbs lost in the last 4 weeks, slightly under what I planned, but I'm still happy.

I'd like to say that my 3 lb loss this week was due to getting my diet and exercise right, but the fact is my teeth are to blame. A toothache started Thursday night and steadily worsened over the weekend. By Monday I was in so much pain I was in tears and the left side of my face resembled a chipmunk. My husband called around until he found a dentist willing to see me right away. They pulled the tooth and I'm now doped up on antibiotics and pain pills while my mouth heals.

Needless to say, food hasn't exactly been on my mind. I've been living on soup and water for nearly a week now. On a good note, the whole experience has made me more mindful of actual hunger so I haven't been eating out of boredom or habit. Hopefully that will carry over once I'm able to eat real food again.

Self-compliments
1) I've been averaging 10-12 glasses of water a day.
2) Despite dealing with my tooth, I completed the Spark Healthy Eating Challenge.
3) Since my tooth has caused me to cut down on my smoking substantially, I've decided to try to quit smoking altogether.
4) I've been getting lots of sleep lately.
5) My efforts to stock the pantry and fridge with healthier foods is really showing now.

Experimenting with Smoothies

Thursday, April 25, 2013

While I love fresh fruit, I'm not big on veggies, which makes it a challenge when it comes to making sure I get enough in my daily diet. I can only eat salads for so long before I start getting bored with them. To help ensure I am getting them in, I've decided to add smoothies to my meal plan, having one daily at least 5 days a week.

Today's smoothie was made with 1 cup of baby spinach, half a small banana, six strawberries, ten grapes and a radish. I threw in a couple tablespoons of flax seeds for the omega 3s and to boost the fiber. It was a little thick so I added a splash of water to thin it out and make it easier to drink.

It was pretty good. I couldn't taste the veggies at all, only the fruit. I could probably get away with sneaking in a little more veggies. I'll try that with tomorrow's smoothie. The flax seeds didn't puree completely. The texture wasn't a major issue, but I'll probably try grinding them in the future before adding them.

Self-compliments for the day
1) I've already got in 3 servings of fruits and veggies today and still have meals left.
2) A job that hubby has been trying to get for a while finally set up an interview.
3) Nutrition-wise, I'm doing great today.
4) Hubby didn't forget our anniversary is coming up.
5) My organization efforts in the house are starting to pay off.

I made a kale smoothie once and, like your spinach one today, didn't taste the kale at all, just the fruit. Good choices!

I love fruit smoothies. My favorite is a pineapple one : 2 oz OJ, 3 oz ginger ale, 1 cup frozen pineapple. Never thought of throwing in spinach, which I love so maybe I will try that.
If you come up with any other veggie added smoothies, please pass on the recipes. Thanx. emoticon (this sort of looks like a smoothie)

Sounds like a good plan to sneak in veggies. And congrats on all that you've accomplished today. I wish your husband luck in the interview process.

A Little Discouraged

Wednesday, April 24, 2013

I weighed in today to find I'd lost only 0.6 lbs. After losing 2.2 lbs my first week back on the wagon and another 1.6 lbs last week, it's a bit discouraging to see that I dropped less than a pound this week. I know I should consider it progress because it was a loss, albeit a small one, but I'm disappointed.

I'm not giving up though. I did have a couple areas of weakness this week so I'm going to focus on getting those back in order. Hopefully next week the scale will be feeling more friendly.

Self-compliments for the day
1) I had my 8 glasses of water in before noon.
2) Making an effort to go to bed by 11 has helped with the constant tiredness that plagues me.
3) I'm actually stopping and asking myself "Are you truly hungry?" before eating.
4) My daughter's artwork got selected for the local art show.
5) I got a good lead on a job for hubby. If he can land this job, he'll be making over double what he makes now, which means we can pay off all of our debt and buy a house.

Well, you already know this, so I'm just reminding you: weight loss is always quickest right at the beginning and a fair amount of that is water weight, not actual fat loss. You were hoping for more than 0.6, I get it, but that's nothing to sneeze at.
Are you tracking your food? You don't have to make the tracker public, if you don't want to, but it;s really useful for your own information to know what you're eating and when.
Are you getting in any exercise at all? I really like wearing a pedometer. It helps me keep track of whether I'm moving or not. Never mind setting any big goals... just maybe try to take a few more steps than you did the day before.
Take at look at the Spark videos that are free here on the site. Look for one or two that look doable, just to get the blood moving.
These things help me to keep going, even when the scale isn't telling me what I want to hear. Maybe you could pick just one thing that you aren't doing yet, and add it to your plan for the rest of the month. See how that works.

Another 1.4 lbs Gone!

Wednesday, April 17, 2013

I weighed in today at 1.4 less than last Wednesday. I was really hoping to see 2 lbs gone, but considering I missed several days of walking due to rain and my leg and had a bad day carb-wise, I'm still happy. It brings me to 3.6 lbs down in 2 weeks.

I added a new exercise to the mix this week, stair-stepping. I've been using our back steps for it rather than buying one of those exercise steps. I step up and back as fast as I can. Right now I can only manage about 5 minutes before I get winded, but I've been doing it a couple times a day. According to the fitness tracker, I'm burning 144 calories every time I do it for 5 minutes so it's definitely something I plan to continue as part of my day, especially since it barely takes any time at all to do. As an added bonus, it's helping tone my butt and legs.

Self-compliments for the day
1) Even though I found a shirt I really wanted to buy on sale yesterday, I didn't buy it because I'm determined that I'm going to get to a smaller size.
2) Thanks to the FuelPerks I earned at BiLo, we were able to fill up hubby's truck for only $2.43.
3) Thanks to the savings at the pump, hubby thinks I'm a genius.
4) I found a new exercise that burns calories and didn't cost any money for equipment.
5) I caught a sale yesterday and managed to buy my daughter five pair of shorts and a bathing suit for under $15.

Carbs are Not my Friend

Tuesday, April 16, 2013

I woke up with a migraine yesterday. I've suffered from migraines since childhood, at my worst getting up to 1-2 a week. Now thanks to a daily preventative medicine, I only get one every month or so. It still sucks though. I envy the people that just get a regular headache that can be relieved with a dose of Tylenol.

Anyway, thanks to not feeling well, my plans for the day were shot. I spent most of the day in bed. When I did get hungry, I didn't want to go to a lot of effort so instead of fixing a healthy meal, I grabbed a microwave meal. I couldn't do that with supper so I just fixed a box of hamburger helper. My one concession to healthy eating was substituting ground turkey for the ground beef. I even caved and drank a Pepsi because sometimes caffeine will help ease up a migraine.

As a result, I got in a lot more carbs that I have been eating lately. And to my surprise, I felt the effects almost immediately. Prior to limiting my carb intake, I often had an upset stomach. That went away when I stopped eating breads, pastas and carb-heavy processed meals. But yesterday when I ate a bunch of carbs, I found my stomach churning barely a half hour after eating. I also woke up this morning feeling queasy, something that hadn't happened since I started limiting carbs.

Apparently carbs are not my friend. I'm hoping my indulgence doesn't come back to bite me in the tush tomorrow when I weigh in.

Self-compliments for the day
1) Even though I ate crappy yesterday, I stayed within my calorie limits.
2) I still got in 8 glasses of water.
3) I'm not beating myself up over a bad day.
4) Now that I've had 3 days off from exercise, my legs are feeling much better.
5) Even though I spent most of the day in bed and didn't get any exercise at all, I still managed 6400 steps yesterday.

I know that feeling. When I eat too many carbs I get a headache and tummy ache, sometimes it even feels like a hangover! Live and Learn!

Based on your reaction to the carbs, I'm curious if you have a gluten allergy. Might be worth looking into it. I had a friend who had a similar experience and she just decided to cut out gluten and her days of upset stomachs are behind her!

Good job still managing to stay within your calorie limits! :D
