As Promised....Cookies..PB&J Brownies and Cooky Recipe Number 19: Oatmeal Coconut Drops

Saturday, December 15, 2012

These were adapted from a food network 12 days of cookies recipe.
www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/jeff-mau
ro/pb-and-j-blondie-recipe/index.html

I just wanted brownies so I took out 1/3 cup of flour and added 1/3 cup cocoa powder. I also omitted the chopped peanuts and put in chocolate chips instead. They were a big hit.

This is the drop cooky variation. My husband and his friends enjoyed them very much.

More baking on tap today :-)

And the orthopedic doc says........

Friday, December 07, 2012

it's most likely IT Band syndrome at the Gerdy's tubercle attachment point.
www.coretherapy.com/health_news/arti
cles_iliotibial_band.html

What he did see in one of the x-rays when I was lying on my side with my knee bent, is that my kneecaps track toward the outside...not too fabulous....probably from tight ITB. He didn't seem at all worried about the ostopenia since I've already been diagnosed with arthritis and the fluid was probably caused by walking with my knee locked.
He suggested taking a couple of weeks off of running and doing cross training. Continue with the exercises, stretches and foam rolling I have been doing from when I diagnosed myself with ITB syndrome in November. Try Superfeet insoles....he noticed my knees do track a little inward when I do single-leg squat.
I should be getting a call from PT to get an appointment and will go back and see the doc in 6 weeks...sooner if things get worse or I can cancel if I'm feeling fabulous.
It is very good news. I should be running again soon and will be able to do my 8K race in March :-)
We will now be back to our regular baking blogs.

STRINGS58 12/30/2012 2:59PM

I may have to try the insoles someday - but right now, I think that my interior thigh muscle is the weak culprit of the IT syndrome imbalance, so I'm looking at strengthening that one. I've got the foam roller, but I'm still figuring out how to make it "hurt so good"

I hope you find yourself recovering quickly and you have some good distractions. This stuff can be frustrating.

SPEEDYDOG 12/14/2012 7:21AM

    Hi Nat,

At least you know what is going on! I hope the PT can help get you on the right track. One of the reasons I mix biking with running is to give my body a break. Biking is low impact. (A few cuts and bruises not withstanding).

I hope you heal quickly.

That is great news, emoticon for you still being able to do your race in March. How are you feeling these days. I was born with my kneecaps pointing outwards, ortho fixed one when I torn my meniscus in soccer injury but since I was not having problems with the other one he said ain't broke don't fix it! He said later I would need surgery on it but not until I start having problems with it.

X-Ray Report

Thursday, December 06, 2012

** HISTORY **:
Left knee pain without trauma

** FINDINGS **:
Technique: Three views of the left knee were obtained.

Mild periarticular osteopenia is suggested. Trace effusion is
noted in the suprapatellar bursa. No other significant
abnormality.

Hmmmm....well, I know I have arthritis in my knee (osteo) and I can see that it is swollen above the knee. What that has to do with my calf, I don't know. I have an appointment on Friday with orthopedics. We shall see.

I started feeling arthritis in my knees a few weeks after I started ellipticizing regularly, so I'm trying to replace it with a variety of circuit training. It's too bad, because the repetition of running and ellipticizing zens my brain out. Stupid arthritis!

Las Vegas RnR Half Marathon 12/2/12

Wednesday, December 05, 2012

I guess I never posted what happened after the IT band issues. I did try a run on 11/20 and was hit by a calf pain that made it impossible for me to keep running...or even really walking on it unless I kept my knee locked. It started getting better...some weird knee tightness (feeling almost like there was something in the way). I could walk normally at least. I saw the doctor on 11/26 because the calf started hurting again...she thought it was just a strain and not any DVT and said go ahead and run the HM.
Off to Vegas I went. I met up with JLITT62 and we had a good time catching up. She said she would stick with me during the race and that she did.
I started out feeling fabulous...got about a half mile in to the race and that calf thing happened again!! I walked the remainder of the race rather painfully but JLITT stuck with me even though I told her she could go ahead and run. What a fabulous friend. She posted a couple of blogs about the event:
www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo
urnal_individual.asp?blog_id=5152853

HM number one done!!
OvrPl Bib Name City, State Time
21575 31134 Natalie Plummer San Jose, CA 03:52:27
It can only get better from here.
I was going to post my horrible finish line photo but they want $40!!! I'll wait until the price goes down...then you can see it in all of it's ugliness.

I'm off to get an x-ray today. Kaiser red tape so my doc can get me to orthopedics to see what is going on with my calf/knee. Hopefully they can figure this out.......and fast!! I want to run!!!!!

Cooky Recipe Number 18: Cinnamon Slices

Sunday, November 18, 2012

These are a variation of the Vanilla Refrigerator Cookies recipe. They turned out light and cinnamony...a big hit.
Alas during my 5 mile run last Sunday, IT band syndrome hit...at least that's what I've diagnosed myself with and my husband concurs. Outer knee pain. I've been doing stretching, foam rolling, hip/butt strengthening all week. I also got a sports massage on Tuesday and he worked the butt and hip muscles and IT band. It's still sore on and off but from what I've read, taking more than about a week off doesn't do anything to help so I will start back up running on Tuesday. I do have a chiropractor appointment on Monday and maybe she can do something to help as well as another sports massage on Wednesday.
I WILL do the Las Vegas RnR HM on 12/2...I refuse to get another super expensive technical shirt.

Oh my - IT band is tricky and hard to get beyond. I agree with WantPower on concentrating some of your stretching on the opposite side. With my IT/whatever problem I was having this fall, the chiro kept pushing me to stretch/roll it. Once I started doing more hip flexor stretches, it did improve (suggested by my physical therapist). Worth a try to add that in too. I'm excited for you for the race. You've waited soooooooo long!

The cookie recipe recipe. It is similar to one of my favorites from my mom "Ice Box Cookies" - the big difference is all dark brown sugar - and of course minus the cinnamon. I usually add chopped pecans too. Very yummy.

Maybe also stretch your inner thigh and front hip flexor really well. My osteo explained to me that when one side hurts, it can indicate a tightness on the opposite side. For me at least, I have found this to be very helpful...

Those cookies look fantastic -- I can almost taste them!

Ask your massage therapist if he can do Myers-style myofascial release (he may know it by the name Anatomy Trains.) It is pretty aggressive and can even be outright painful, but I have had amazing results on both clients and myself (self-treating and being worked on by other therapists.)

Good luck and feel better!

    The cookies look wonderful.
Bummer about your IT band. I know you'll do well at the HM. Even if you're slower than usual, I hope you end up having a good time doing it. Yay for chiropractors and sports massage therapists!
Have a lovely Thanksgiving with the family.

I have knee/hip pain now & again . . . sometimes just a twinge, sometimes really painful. I just never know when it will strike.

Here's hoping you feel much better by Tuesday!

I'd devour these for breakfast (which I just had - a healthy one). My faves.

    Hi Nat,

I love cinnamon! There is a big void left by Hostess going out of business. You are sitting on a gold mine!

A trip to the Chiropractor sounds like a good idea. Have you has much trouble with your IT band before? When my IT band started to hurt the pain was in my hip.

Good luck on your HM.

Bruce
