Cooky Recipe Number 18: Cinnamon Slices

These are a variation of the Vanilla Refrigerator Cookies recipe. They turned out light and cinnamony...a big hit.
Alas during my 5 mile run last Sunday, IT band syndrome least that's what I've diagnosed myself with and my husband concurs. Outer knee pain. I've been doing stretching, foam rolling, hip/butt strengthening all week. I also got a sports massage on Tuesday and he worked the butt and hip muscles and IT band. It's still sore on and off but from what I've read, taking more than about a week off doesn't do anything to help so I will start back up running on Tuesday. I do have a chiropractor appointment on Monday and maybe she can do something to help as well as another sports massage on Wednesday.
I WILL do the Las Vegas RnR HM on 12/2...I refuse to get another super expensive technical shirt.

    The cookies sound great! I have IT band issues - and the machine at the gym for inner thigh work plus the foam roller - I'm gonna try to get into a routine. The advice when the pain hits is STOP! so, emoticon and rehab it. It's frustrating . . .oh yeah, but not the end of the world. My IT band is one of the reasons I love that elliptical.....

    emoticon Just keep working it. It sounds like you are doing the right things to try to take care of it. I've noticed some trouble with mine, but only after short, fast runs. Long runs don't seem to bother it.

Good for you on rising against the expensive technical t-man.

    The IT band is super annoying. I hope you get it taken care of before the race, or that it at least wont affect your run too much. Mine always starts up near the hip and then travels downwards - hopefully your chiropractor can help a bit!!

    Oh my - IT band is tricky and hard to get beyond. I agree with WantPower on concentrating some of your stretching on the opposite side. With my IT/whatever problem I was having this fall, the chiro kept pushing me to stretch/roll it. Once I started doing more hip flexor stretches, it did improve (suggested by my physical therapist). Worth a try to add that in too. I'm excited for you for the race. You've waited soooooooo long!

The cookie recipe recipe. It is similar to one of my favorites from my mom "Ice Box Cookies" - the big difference is all dark brown sugar - and of course minus the cinnamon. I usually add chopped pecans too. Very yummy.

    Maybe also stretch your inner thigh and front hip flexor really well. My osteo explained to me that when one side hurts, it can indicate a tightness on the opposite side. For me at least, I have found this to be very helpful...

    Those cookies look fantastic -- I can almost taste them!

Ask your massage therapist if he can do Myers-style myofascial release (he may know it by the name Anatomy Trains.) It is pretty aggressive and can even be outright painful, but I have had amazing results on both clients and myself (self-treating and being worked on by other therapists.)

    I have knee/hip pain now & again . . . sometimes just a twinge, sometimes really painful. I just never know when it will strike.

I love cinnamon! There is a big void left by Hostess going out of business. You are sitting on a gold mine!

A trip to the Chiropractor sounds like a good idea. Have you has much trouble with your IT band before? When my IT band started to hurt the pain was in my hip.

Cooky Recipe Number 17: Ginger Almond Cookies

This is another refrigerator cookie. Very nice molasses and ginger flavor.
I mixed these up last Sunday before embarking on my 12.5 mile long run. I tested out having some pancakes in the morning to see if that would work for race day since the HM is in the afternoon/evening. It worked out well. What I forgot about was that the time change was going to make it get dark very, very early. My husband asked when we were at about mile 10 what time was sundown because it was starting to get dark. emoticon This was at 4:50 and sundown was at 5:05. We do our long runs on a trail near a golf course and they claim to close the gates at sundown. There was no way we were going to get back to the car in 15 minutes so we veered off the trail and ran around the golf course on the street. That was good because the trail is not lighted.
After a quick shower at home, we went out for some Cuban food for dinner. When we got home, my husband decided to feed some of the neighborhood feral cats. Malika decided to take that opportunity to bolt out the door. My husband couldn't get her to come back in...she kept running away. We kept seeing her on our fence but couldn't get to her. She spent two nights outside but on Tuesday I guess she finally decided she had gotten enough of the great outdoors and let my husband pick her up. We were certainly glad to have her back. We're keeping a close eye on the doors when we come and go now.
Tomorrow I we've got a 5ish miler on tap followed by brunch with some friends. Should be a nice day.

    Too much excitement! So glad you got Malika - how scary! Simba has gotten out a few times, but I've always managed to catch him; he's never spent a night outdoors.

There are all different sorts of theories on when to start your taper . . . but by doing a 14 miler you'll have run further thsn I ever have . . . probably further thsn I want to, frankly!

    Glad your cat came to its senses. Mine only very occasionally go out the door -- get about 2 feel and then (usually) freeze and/or panic. Oops what have I done? But then, mine have lived indoors their entire lives.
I find catnip (especially a pot of the living plant) to be a very persuasive inducement. Of course, you might end up with extra cats.

Cooky Recipe Number 16: Chocolate Refrigerator Cookies and some gluten free vegan treats

I made these cookies with some coffee extract to make them mocha. I only baked about half the dough and put the second log into the freezer so we can have cookies anytime.

I was on Facebook yesterday and So Delicious had this whole wheat pumpkin chocolate chip recipe posted. I decided to try the gluten free option so that my brother's girlfriend could enjoy some, too.

I did some runner's yoga this morning and will be heading out for a bike ride with my husband, brother and his girlfriend soon. Then we'll be going out for brunch and sampling the tasty cookies.
Looking forward to a "long run" tomorrow with a friend I met at the Galloway retreat in January.

When it comes to the cookies, just don't know how you do it. I've made angel food, pineapple upside cake, banana pudding, and lots of other desserts and managed to eat sensibly or totally resist. Indian Buffet Lunch on Saturday

That was truly my only plate and I did not even have any naan.
Today I did an 11.2 (Runkeeper) or 11.1 (Garmin...I think it didn't get the satellite right away) run today. It was walking for the first 5 miles and then running the rest of the way. With the cool down, I logged 11.39/11.29 miles. Only a couple of twinges in my wonky foot (at about 10 miles). Both feet are a little tired and slightly sore now but I think it's because they haven't this kind of workout for quite some time.
Yes, Catherine, I will foam roll my legs this evening but I am wearing compression socks right now.
We are going out with my in-laws for my mother-in-law's birthday in a few minutes. I'm going to enjoy some pasta :-)

I have to say I'm relieved about your foot not feeling wonky until the end. I hope that's as good of a sign as I think it is.

I'm totally excited about doing 3-4 days each week of HIIT instead of 2. One of my gym mates also keeps telling me I'd love spinning, but they only offter classes during my commute times, so I'm pretty stoked about that too.
