Baking My Way Through Betty Crocker's Cooky Book

Saturday, March 31, 2012

One of my friends (NYYCHICA) decided she would like to cook her way through a cookbook. I told her I would bake through a baking cookbook. I decided on Betty Crocker's Cooky Book. I picked up a copy of the reprint of the 1963 book...full of fun '60's drawings.... a few years ago but had only made a few cookies from it. I thought it would be great fun to work my way through it.

The first recipe in the book is Applesauce Cookies. Spicy and cakey. Very tasty :-)

What a fun idea! My mom had that cookbook, along with the classic Betty Crocker cookbook of that decade that was (and is) my cooking bible! I love to bake, but I tend to collect so many recipes online, in magazines, and from other people that I'm afraid I'll never get to them all!

Great idea!! I'm more of a baker myself than a cook and I tend to do the same old same old so making ones way through an entire book would open up the dust on recipes that are gems which I otherwise may have overlooked. I guess the same could be said for other things in life to look beyond routines - fitness, work, hobbies. emoticon

How fun is that! WOOO HOOO!!! Maybe I need to do something like that to get my mind off all these documents! LOL...but then again I cannot exercise so I would be eating them all! :(

Hope all is well with you Nat, miss chatting with you, just swamped at work. And these days it seems I call in sick once a week now b/c I cannot even get out of bed, which is so NOT ME. :(

Have a great Monday, chat with you later.

    Dear Nat,

Thanks for the memories! My mom had that great old Betty Crocker Cookie book! Every recipe in that book is great. For the first part of my life I though Betty Crocker was the only person on the planet that knew how to write a cookbook. My mom taught me how to cook and bake using classic Betty Crocker cookbooks. I got a Cub Scout merit badge for cooking. Yes, I am a guy and I can cook and bake! I like knowing what is in what I eat.

Unfortunately, when my mom died my dad gave her assortment of cookbooks to my older brother's wife. My older brother's wife is an terrible cook. My dad reasoned that she would become a better cook if she had good cookbooks. Nope, didn't happen. Great cookbooks can't make a bad cook into skilled cook.

I can practically taste those yummy spicy applesauce cookies just like my mom used to make.

I'm Still Here

Sunday, March 25, 2012

Just been very busy. Lots of stuff to do at work. I've been keeping up with my running and doing Jari Love strength training DVDs.
I took last Friday off and so did my husband. We didn't get a chance to relax together last weekend for our anniversary so we did so on Friday. Nice brunch out and Godzilla on Blu-Ray in the afternoon...Japanese subtitled version.
Yesterday the SVSM had it's kick off classic model contest. I worked at the registration desk so I didn't get a chance to see very many of the models on display. We had a pretty big turnout...450 models in the contest. My husband even won a few awards :-) Sorry, no pictures of the great cars, tanks, ships and planes. I do have a picture of the chocolate mint chip cookies I brought for us to snack on:

I got out for a long run today of 4.5 miles. It felt good.
Laundry is done, groceries are shopped for, vacuuming done....ready to start the week again.

    Hi Nat,

As a modeler I want specifics. What awards did your husband win?

My kids and I love the campy old Japanese monster flicks. One of our favorites is King Kong versus Godzilla. This is a truly terrible movie that is so bad it is actually good!

Yay, for the 4.5 miles!

Tell your husband that I sent away to a hobby shop in Poland to get several RPM 1/35 scale Renault FT-17 kits. I also bought photo-etch external detail parts and resin/photo-etch interior parts for the RPM kits. I even got resin engines for the kits. I got track kits with individual links, which are far better than the rubber tracks provided in the kits. It took a while to get all this stuff from Poland but the kits are beautiful.

Thanks, Bruce

I guess it's time for a check in

Sunday, March 11, 2012

Super busy at work after I got back from Chicago. Lots of samples to run on the mass spec.
I did get in two Jari Love ST sessions and 2 midweek runs. I did some elliptical on Friday because I had a sports/clinical massage on Thursday and knew I shouldn't do any ST. This morning I went for a 3.5 mile long run with the extra walking it was a total of 4.75 miles :-) I felt it a little in my other shin/side of the calf....probably because of the rolling hills on that trail?? Maybe that leg is just tired of compensating for the wonky one. Anyway, it was only a tiny bit sore.
Friday night we had planned to go to a food truck gathering but it was back so we ended up at a local Chinese place called Taiwan. We had planned to go to a food truck gathering but it was packed. They serve their egg rolls in tiny shopping carts:

Today went for brunch with a friend who moved back to New Jersey over the holidays. It was nice to see her.
On a dare from my husband, I baked some chocolate spicy potato chip cookies. I used the Sabritas Adobadas chips. They turned out pretty well. I figured the chocolate cookie would go well with the spiciness.....kind of like cayenne brownies.

I hope everyone is enjoying their short Sunday...except those in Arizona and Hawaii who don't do the silly time change thing.
It's going to be hard getting up to workout tomorrow morning...that's for sure.

Chicago

Monday, March 05, 2012

Last week I had to go to Chicago for a training class. Apparently it came free when we purchased our mass spectrometer. I think I should have gone a couple of months ago, though. I already knew most of the stuff that was covered in the class.
They did give us lunch every day so that was a bonus. Yes, I had a small piece of the Chicago-style pizza.
My husband came along. He rented a car and drove around to various places while I was in class all day. We did get to the city on Friday night and checked out the Field Museum and saw a concert at Blue Chicago. Shirley Johnson. She was good and had a great band. Unfortunately we missed the 10:40pm train back to Wood Dale and had to wait for 2 hours for the next one. We were pretty tired when we flew back on Saturday.
I was good and kept up with my running and did some elliptical as cross training. I got in a 3 mile "long run" on Sunday.

So nice you had a change of scenery even if work did absorb a lot of the time you spent in Chicago. Lucky DH to have had the full days to explore and see the city. Chicago is on my list of cities to visit. I have two cousins who were born there although they no longer live there. The Field Museum sounds awesome.

Sounds like a good week. My husband used to come to conferences with me all the time. We've visited a lot of really cool places we never would have gone if not for me being sent there. YAY for getting the mileage back up - feels great, doesn't it?

Great job on keeping up the exercise! Not knowing a thing about Chicago, I have to ask: what IS the Field museum?

The Field Museum is great, isn't it? We have gone to Chicago twice a year for the opera for the last 15 years or so, until this year. I've missed the trips, but maybe not the traveling, if you know what I mean.

oh boy! i would love to go to Chicago! not to work though. betcha you could have taught the class yourself. too bad you didnt get to do a bit more sightseeing. that is a bummer. sort of how my trip to Baton Rouge was, all work and no play. did you freeze there? compared to California, i would expect you to be miserable.

Too bad the training was futile but Chicago is FUN especially the Field Museum. How does your foot feel? Have you been running?
