Chicago

Monday, March 05, 2012

Last week I had to go to Chicago for a training class. Apparently it came free when we purchased our mass spectrometer. I think I should have gone a couple of months ago, though. I already knew most of the stuff that was covered in the class.
They did give us lunch every day so that was a bonus. Yes, I had a small piece of the Chicago-style pizza.
My husband came along. He rented a car and drove around to various places while I was in class all day. We did get to the city on Friday night and checked out the Field Museum and saw a concert at Blue Chicago. Shirley Johnson. She was good and had a great band. Unfortunately we missed the 10:40pm train back to Wood Dale and had to wait for 2 hours for the next one. We were pretty tired when we flew back on Saturday.
I was good and kept up with my running and did some elliptical as cross training. I got in a 3 mile "long run" on Sunday.

Sounds like a nice trip to Chicago, Nat! So glad you got to keep up with your running while there. I have never been to Chicago, but my husband belongs to a Marine Corps reserve unit there. I am guessing I will be going up there eventually for a Marine Corps Birthday ball or something.

    Hi Natalie,

Sounds like you had a good time. I went to the Fields Museum when I was in Chicago last year. I just wanted to see the Maneaters of the Savo, also known as the "Ghost" and the "Darkness". Big cats.

Thanks, Bruce

So nice you had a change of scenery even if work did absorb a lot of the time you spent in Chicago. Lucky DH to have had the full days to explore and see the city. Chicago is on my list of cities to visit. I have two cousins who were born there although they no longer live there. The Field Museum sounds awesome.

Birthday Cupcakes

Monday, February 20, 2012

It was a very busy week for me last week at work. Happily, I took Friday off because I have lots of vacation time I need to use and today is a holiday.
I went for a sports massage again on Thursday. Ouch...but so good!!
Sunday was my birthday so I baked some Hot Chocolate Cupcakes. The recipe is from Fine Cooking (Hot Chocolate Layer Cake). I made a 1/3 batch and did cupcakes because I really didn't need a 3 layer cake especially at 1080 calories per slice.

I was able to do 3 runs last week..Tuesday, Thursday and one my birthday :-)
Today I'm looking forward to some elliptical and Jackie Warner 30 Day Fast Start. I'm really liking the pyramids and there aren't any high impact moves or things that bother my ankle so I think it's good until I'm fully back to normal.
I have an appointment his Friday with the PT. I will see what she says. I've still got a little bit of twinges every once in a while but it's definitely doing much better.
Happy Monday!

recipe please. i like two or 3 layer cakes for my birthday. DD's birthday is the week before mine, both on wednesdays, and she wanted the same cake i did (white cake with white icing, i am such a vanilla person), so we had her celebratory dinner Saturday, with the cake. i had one small slice. She and DH had it for a couple of snacks and she had it for breakfast, leaving one smallish but real slice for my birthday breakfast. and then it was done, i had real birthday cake for both birthdays. ok, it's true i picked at the crumbs in the cake safe daily, but did not overdo that at all. (DD is a chocolate cake person, however, or chestnut. or his favorite, a choolate genois cut in 3 horizontal layers, chestnut buttercream, and chocolate ganache. quite excellent. see what your pictures have done to me!

Baking and PT

Sunday, February 12, 2012

I found some mini peanut butter cups on the King Arthur Flour website and couldn't resist.

I decided to make peanut butter peanut butter cup cookies. They were a big hit when my husband took that to a meeting with his model car group.

Saturday they were putting on a model car show, so I baked more cookies. This time, chocolate mint chip cookies. Nestle makes a dark chocolate and mint chip mixed bag. They're pretty good.

Friday I went for my first PT appointment. She watched me walk and thought it didn't look too bad. She gave me some exercises to do and told me to ice every night. She also say it was fine if I ran but I had to ice afterward.....I'll take it!!! I go back in two weeks for her to check my progress.

    Hi Natalie,

I build model cars. Can I have a cookie? I am glad you are able to run. I am supposed to ice my foot and calf after I run. I keep forgetting. But I am running in snow so I think that counts as "icing". I know you will be far more diligent than me about PT.

I bet your husband has more model kits than he can build in two lifetimes. So do I.

Thanks, Bruce

The mini peanut butter cups are so cute! The cookies you made with them look soooo good.

Glad to hear the PT appointment went so well. I hope the exercises and icing help and everything gets back to normal soon.

MRI Results

Saturday, February 04, 2012

Well the podiatrist called yesterday and gave me my results. Mild non-specific fluid in the bone marrow where the "fracture" was and everything else looked absolutely normal. My problem now must be coming from walking "funny" after getting out of the boot. REALLY. I never would have thought that emoticon
He said, "walk as normal as you can." Hello....I've been trying. He's going to get me some PT so I can learn some stretches and exercises to get me back in shape....why he didn't do that before I don't know.
In other news, the sports (deep tissue) massage has left me bruised but feeling better. My ankle and lateral edge of my foot are only slightly sore every once in a while. I think changing out of the arch supports and wearing non-stability shoes has helped, too. My flat feet don't overpronate and they don't want that kind of support. It was starting to bother my good foot.
Heading in for some elliptical soon and if all goes well, perhaps a short run tomorrow.
Happy Saturday!!

Hopefully you'll find some resolution on this soon. It's been a long haul for you, my friend. I know how much you must miss your running. The elliptical always seems to be a good piece of equipment for those in recovery...and everyone else too...so many calories burned and great overall body workout without putting stress on the joints. Keep me posted on how you're doing!

So I think it could have been much worse - I'm happy that its only some fluids and nothing more major! I really hope you'll be on the road to a full recovery here soon!!!

Thanks for stopping by my blog as well! Sometimes a good fit is necessary! haha!! And armadillos & zumba just make the day better!!

Hope you're having a fabulous Thursday!!!

How's the PT been going, or have you not started yet? Did you get around to running? Unfortunately, it looks as if the temps are going to go up again round here, which will allow us to head back out for our runs, but at the same time.... I just get unreasonably mad when I'm cheated out of winter, and this one was rather pathetic!

You're right, there still ARE pushups in the Push Phase, but only for one of the days. :( I guess if I turn into a pushup nut, I have to go back to P90X for a second round - Chest & Back is nothing BUT pushups and pullups!

Awww sounds like you are making progress. I think PT can do wonders. I really should keep up with the exercises mine gave me for my knee - that is the one challenge when you have the appts it keeps you accountable, but once you are on your own, slacking is inevitable.

Here's hoping that PT does that final trick. Good idea giving that massage a try. Sounds like you might be finding the way to a pain-free foot. Just try to walk "normally". Ha. That's an unusual thing to say. Good luck!

Oh my goodness! So there was no need for you to walk around with the "boot"? emoticon That's a little bothering, but then I guess sometimes these sports injuries are hard to exactly pinpoint. emoticon Hopefully these new stretches are going to help out so you can finally run again. My foot is hurting right now and I'm kicking myself because I want to get out there on the road too. emoticon emoticon

Bruised? Eeekkk! But glad you feel better from it. I still swear the fact that I had a massage therapist right there with me when I did my ankle in is why it never hurt horrible. She worked on me for almost half an hour sitting on the steps at the finish line...while the race organizers didn't so much as offer me an ice pak. Like everyone else, I'm hoping the PT works wonders for you. And I agree on the shoes. Seems sometimes we try to make things "right" that never really were wrong - just different. I'm looking forward to hearing how it all progresses.

    Hi Natalie,

It is easy for you podiatrist to say "non-specific bone marrow fluid" and that you should walk normally. I think it is another thing to live with it!

I hope you can get your shoe issues worked out. I wear a neutral cushioned shoe. For me a stability shoe is an instrument of torture!

You are doing the right things. Good luck.

That is good news! Hope you get the PT soon so you can get the stretches and exercises you need. I really think that helps more than anything else. I think sometimes the other stuff like the boot and shoes can make things worse depending. I know that sort of thing can help a lot of people but I always found it made things worse for me. I've done better with my feet (and I used have a lot of issues with foot pain and shin splints) now that I do workouts barefoot (shoes would cause me so much pain that I could barely do anything) and doing stretches and exercises using balls. But that's just my experience. :)

2WHEELEDSHARON 2/4/2012 10:51AM
