Sunday Baking

Sunday, January 29, 2012

My butt couldn't face the bike today so I tried the elliptical. My foot wasn't exactly pleased but it was only a little bit sore so I got 4.75 miles.
I baked some low carb hazelnut cappuccino chip muffins for my husband:

We went out for lunch at P.F. Changs because I remembered that we had received a $10 gift card from them for participating in the Las Vegas Rock and Roll Half Marathon Fiasco.

Then I came home and baked some chocolate chip cookies that I will be sending to a friend this week:

A nice day. Unfortunately the weekend is over.
Have a great week, my friends :-)

    Your baking kills me!!
Now, I need to reconsider PF Changs . Been staying away from Chinese Food, but maybe can find something sensible to eat there...need to check their online nutrition.

Mmm PF Changs. We keep telling ourselves that we have to get there but we never manage. They have vegan options I'm told and are willing to make just about anything for you since they only have fresh ingredients. Sounds great! And those photos -oh I'm hungry now. haha Glad you had a great weekend!

The New Mixer Came

Wednesday, January 25, 2012

The new KitchenAid arrived yesterday afternoon. Just in time for me to make some Mississippi Mud Bars.
Here is the new mixer (left) in Empire Red next to the one that didn't work in Cinnamon Gloss.

Here are the cookies for a potluck tomorrow:

Update on the foot/ankle: It's still a little bit sore on the lateral edge of my foot but the ankle feels okay. I wore my Doc Martens today. I had gotten an appointment notification yesterday that I was to go today to see the group of podiatrists. Yesterday afternoon, my podiatrist called and said he would like to do an MRI before we had this appointment. I thought that would be a good idea so the MRI is set for Tuesday morning. Hopefully it will shed some light on the subject.
We made it to Wednesday...have a great rest of the week.

ooooo! I have a black and stainless one. LOVE IT!!!!

I use it for everything, we even bought the attachments (grinder, slicer, grater) We now grind our own meat, which I then put in the bowl, and use the mixer to make my meatballs, or meatloaf!

Oh, it works great for bread and other treats too!

Jeff Galloway Running Retreat in Carmel

Sunday, January 22, 2012

I know you were all trying to make me feel better when I was thinking I wouldn't do any running at this retreat, but I'm happy to report that I was able to do some on Saturday.
Friday we got a phone call in the morning informing us that Jeff's plane flight was canceled and he was going to be a little late. The late afternoon run/walk was going to be cancelled and the weekend would start with the wine and cheese meet and greet at 6:30. We drove down to Carmel and checked into the hotel. Fun little cottages.
The evening was nice. We met everyone. There were only 9 of us plus Jeff and his wife, Barbara.
The next morning, we met for coffee at 8am and headed out for a run/walk about 45 minutes later. My ankle had been a little cranky on the walk down the hill from our hotel to theirs but once we got running, it actually felt great. It was a nice 4ish miles out at back along the coast. Then we all had a little breakfast and he began going over the different intervals, magic miles, long runs, the importance of walking for fat burning, etc. We broke for lunch and then came back in the afternoon for lots of fun stories and he showed us the cadence drills and the acceleration gliders.
We had the rest of the afternoon off but not before he had made reservations for us all to have dinner together at a local Italian restaurant. That was a lot of fun with everybody talking and learning about each other.
This morning, we met again for another coffee, run and breakfast with more stories. I decided it would be best for me to just walk, so the rest of the group got ahead of me and I finally lost them. I did manage to follow them to a nearby trail but lost sight of them. They turned right and I went straight. That's okay, I ended up with a nice 4.5 mile walk/hike. My ankle was a little cranky on the downhill portions but happy going up hill. They did get back about 15 minutes before me and were kind of worried about where I was because they expected me to be back before them. Jeff also checked our form. Happily the only problem I had was that I was favoring my wonky foot a little but otherwise I was doing great. He figured that once it heals up, I'll be fine. He did say that I should keep away from the acceleration gliders for a year and just concentrate on cadence.
We checked out around lunchtime and came home.
A very nice weekend. I think we'll be going back next year :-)
I'm glad my foot/ankle is doing so well. Maybe it's finally getting over the healing hump. Fingers crossed.
Have a great Sunday night and a fabulous week.

How lovely that you had a nice time and were able to run!

I have a few questions about your ankle. Some things that you mentioned sound familiar from when I had the inflammation in mine.
Does the ankle also hurt more when going down stairs? Would you say it took about 5-10 minutes for the ankle to "warm up" and stop hurting during your run? Where in the ankle does it hurt exactly?
I hope you don't mind my asking, but it might help in figuring out what really is wrong with your ankle?

Seriously KitchenAid

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

I just got off the phone with KitchenAid about my mixer that should have arrived already.
Apparently the Cinnamon Gloss color one is backordered for another 2-4 weeks. How come the didn't tell me it was backordered when I called on 1/2??
They will send me one in another color. She even told me what they had available in stock. Empire Red is on it's way today (fingers crossed). Now to wait another 7-10 days.

That sucks! I had a blender warranty issue with them a long time ago. They were great then. I think most customer service has gotten bad. Unfortunately.

I hope it arrives quickly. if it is in stock I really don't get the long wait for the new color choice. So slow...

Ugh! That's a little annoying I'm sure. Were you compensated for the wait and having to change up the color? I think a lot of company's have forgotten that its a privilege to be in business at all in these tough economic times. At least you might get your kitchenaid sooner than later. :(

I just had the same out-of-stock experience with another company. Why would it be so difficult for the rep to say "Oh, that color is out of stock. DO you want to wait 6 wekks for that color or choose another color?" See.. not hard.

Things are looking up

Monday, January 16, 2012

I decided to try putting some menthol balm on my foot/shin/calve/ankle. It seems to help. I'm still walking weird. I can tell that I'm supinating. My foot was almost pain free yesterday :-)
I've been biking. I did some No More Trouble Zones today.
I did get this email back from the podiatrist:
Both sports medicine and Orthopedics do not treat foot related conditions here at Santa Clara. How about we do this; I can have you set up to be seen by a group of clinicians in the special problems clinic. This way you can get the opinion of multiple experts all at once. Let me know if this is acceptable to you and I'll set it up.

Kind of weird but I guess that's the way Kaiser works. We will see what happens with this.
Since I had the day off, I did some baking.
Coconut macadamia chocolate chip cookies

Blueberry vitamuffins (from a mix)

Little Callie has been hiding less and exploring more when we are around:

No new mixer yet. I guess I'll have to call KitchenAid tomorrow and see if I can get the tracking number.
Happy Monday!

What a pretty kitty! I need your recipe for your cookies. Yum! emoticon

Yeah to an almost pain free foot, and why WOULDN'T the opinions of multiple experts be acceptable?

Yum cookies and healthy muffins what a perfect balance. I hope having multiple docs look at the foot will help sort it all out.

I would not be able to resist those cookies...wanting to leap into my monitor and grab one right now!

Your Callie looks a lot like our Widget. She's a very shy kitten who scurries through a room like a large, cute mouse!

I hope the group approach helps you get some answers soon.

Callie is so adorable.

Yummy on the baking, they look delicious! Good thing I eating yogurt right now! emoticon

So are you going to do this? Set up appt with specialists? It's worth a shot.

Have a great day.

As always your cookies look yummy! I do like the look of the coconut, macadamia and choc chip one.

Good luck with the continuing foot issue. I am glad the menthol seemed to help. Someone had suggested Arnica to me. Perhaps its the massaging it in that also made a difference?

What a strange set up. I've never heard of sports medicine not dealing with foot problems. Is this a clinic setup?

I was struck by your comment that you supinate, as do I. I'm really surprised that the superfeet haven't helped. Did you wear them when you did you strength training? Balance problems can cause strains when just standing and supporting weight.

My problems improve much faster once I started using the supports all the time and not just when running, which forced my legs and ankles to learn new habits.

Hope you get some answers soon!

Yes- that is a different way of doctoring! Mental image of you sitting before a panel of doctors- sock off, foot kicked high in the air, "See! See this?! FIX ITTTTTTTTTTT"

Those blueberry muffins look scrumptious- from a mix, you say?

Oh- Callie- Soooooooooooooo cute. I just placed a cat that I took in for a few months into a new home.

great looking goodies, as usual! i made an ugly cake this weekend. the icing WOULD NOT stick to it. when i sliced it, i had to actually HOLD the icing in place so it wouldn't fall off. i must have over cooked it i guess. oh well, it still tasted good!

Oh I think the Dr feels guilty from the last response he sent. Glad that he is looking into other options for and that the balm is working. Sometimes we have to be our own Dr's and experiment on ourselves. Oh cookies, look so good and so do the muffins and what a cute kitty, just adorable.

I would give KitchenAid a call too, no mixer yet that is unacceptable.
