Yes, I'm still here

Tuesday, December 27, 2011

I guess it's been a while since I last blogged. What has happened.....let's see:
On Thursday morning I did my second run...boy, it's great to be running again. My big toe and that side of the foot and ankle are a little sore but getting less so (I think) as the days pass. It only hurts when I speed up to 3mph or faster...actually gets less when I start running...must be a tight ligament/tendon/muscle thing. Still working on my ankle and foot strength.
Also on Thursday I was greeted by a broken fridge/freezer. Not fun. We really couldn't do anything about it as we were leaving to drive to Southern California for my husband's grandma's funeral. She was 95 so it wasn't entirely unexpected but still very sad. We did get to see my sister on our drive back up to San Jose on Saturday morning.
Sunday we planned to go out for a run but it was 28 degrees so we did separate runs on the treadmill. Still keeping it short for me. Total with a little hike at the end of 2 miles.
Monday I decided I'd start P90X so I did chest & back and ab ripper. Yikes!! I don't have a pull-up bar (yet) so I used the band draped over the door. It worked okay but I'll be happy when my bar comes...not that I expect to actually be able to do a pull up (yet).
I am not doing the cardio that comes with P90X. I will just do my runs 3 days a week and if I want to double up on some days, I'll just do elliptical or bike.
My husband was able to take out the circuit board on the fridge and replace the blown fuse yesterday. So far, the fridge is working so I bought some new food today. It was very sad dumping out all the contents into yesterday's trash. It's only 2.5 years old...thanks, LG.

Great to hear that you are back running. Thanks for keeping up with me, these days of mourning have zapped my energy and I am looking forward to moving ahead this year.
Sorry to hear of your hubby's Grandma.

Have a wonderful New Year and keep healthy.

Glad you're getting your fitness routine back to where you want to be.

Sucks about the fridge. I'm glad your hubby was able to get it sortof running.

We've had a similar issue with our microwave. Whirlpool knows about the issue, there are 8 failures in our neighborhood (all installed within 6 months of each other, all new homes from the builder)... and the darned things are ~18 months old. Nope. No support. Sucks!

Keep taking it one day at a time

That was nice that you were able to visit your sister on the way back to San Jose. WOW 28 I wouldn't have gone out for run either! LOL... WAY2GO on getting it in on your treadmill. WHOO HOO on the fridge/freezer being fixed. WAY2GO on doing PX90 and sticking to your workouts. I am so happy you are running again!
Have a great day.

Glad to hear the running is progressing! So sorry about your husbands grandma and the dead fridge.

I had to smile at your 28 degrees so no run outside emoticon but then realized you don't have the right clothes to really layer! It was 35 when I ran last. It's 16 an hour ago, 27 now and it's a run day. Hoping for it to warm up more, high is 29, so.. might as well put on the layers and go!

Sorry about your husband's grandma. So happy you are back to running and good luck with P90X! It's a real bummer to have to toss a fridge full of food but I'm glad your hubby was able to fix it. You are not the only person I've heard of having issues with LG refrigerators.

You guys will have to toughen up & run outside when it's cold.

Impressive! I'm guessing the foot will just keep getting better and better. Just treat it with care as you have been. I got a couple exercise DVDs for Christmas since I'm giving up my gym membership - I MUST be disciplined at home. Keep on me. Hope you are enjoying your extended time off work. Impressive work by the husband on the fridge.

Boo fridge! It's kind of heartbreaking to throw out food like that.
Speaking of appliances, I found Jim's mother's old KitchenAid mixer in the back of a top cupboard. It's still in excellent shape, so I cleaned it up and ordered a bowl for it. It's only a 5 quart, but until it goes kaput, I'll be happy with it.

Yay running and P90x! emoticon

Hey, I ran yesterday :-)

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

I've finally finished Slim in 6. Did I get slim....no. Was it a good workout...yes!
I debated about doing the C25K or doing the Galloway Easy 5K plan. I chose Galloway. I have the app on my iPhone (it used to be called Ultimate 5K...I'm not sure if it's changed, though). The old C25K app changed also but apparently there is one through active.com that is the C25K plan.
Anyway, I did W1D1 of Galloway Easy 5K. 3 minute warmup walk, 10 minutes of run/walk intervals, 3 minute cool down. I did 1 minute run/1 minute walk. My arch has been sore for a few days and it was sore yesterday during this. It didn't feel any worse during the running...as a matter of fact it felt a little better. I was wearing my neutral Nike Air Pegasus. I think for the next run I will try putting in my super feet berry insoles to see if that helps a little.
Today I did Runner's Yoga beginner. Lots of downward dogs so my hamstrings and calves got a good stretch.
Hopefully my foot will be a little happier tomorrow. I hope to do day 2 of the run/walk.
Happy Wednesday!

Busy week but now it's vacation :-)

Saturday, December 17, 2011

It seemed like the week would never end. Very busy at work. I have been keeping up with the Slim in 6 workouts. I started week 6 on Wednesday and will finish on Monday. Yay!!! I am getting so bored of doing Burn it Up.
We went to the SVSM (Silicon Valley Scale Modelers) Christmas Party at Round Table Pizza last night and I brought brownies with Andes mints in them:

Today I decided I need some extra calorie burn so I did the elliptical for 30 minutes before Burn it Up...makes that workout significantly harder.
Did the grocery shopping and I've got laundry in the washer and dryer.
Land Rover Christmas Party tonight...should be fun.
Even better....I'm on vacation until next year.
Happy Saturday!

Vegas...the good, the bad and the ugly.

Wednesday, December 07, 2011

My husband and I headed out to Las Vegas on Friday for the Rock and Roll Half Marathon on Sunday. Here's a plot synopsis.
The good:
I got to meet up with a spark friend, JLITT62 a couple of times and we had a great time.
I got my first foot massage on Monday....that really helped a lot because I did a ton of walking.
The bad:
I forgot the brownies I was bringing for JLITT and had to turn around and pick them up from home. This added an hour on to our already long drive. I didn't want to disappoint, though.
Circus Circus is really, really far from any other "good" hotels. We did a lot of walking which was good and bad. I definitely got a lot of exercise and it doesn't seem like I did anything bad to my recovering foot.
The ugly:
The whole race organization. No, I didn't run it but I heard and saw a lot of bad. They didn't do a good job of letting people know where they needed to be. Not cool. They promised shuttles back to the other hotels and we couldn't find them. They ran out of water at some of the stations and they ran out of medals for the runners. They also had green bananas which is pretty crappy. Part of the problem was probably due to the Las Vegas hotel policy of making everybody walk through the hotel (I assume that's a policy...you certainly do a lot of walking through casinos to get anywhere). Thousands of cold, tired, hungry runners having to slog through the hotel. I felt bad for them.
Would I go and do it again (when I'm running again)....maybe but I'd wait a couple of years for them to work out the bugs.
Doing lots of laundry and raking leaves today. Back to work tomorrow.

Hard to go wrong with a Vegas vacation...except, of course, if you're not ready to do a lot of walking. And wow...running out of water in Vegas is NOT good! Hopefully, they'll get it together in future years!

I've heard mixed things about those RnR races - because they're privately owned and not races for charities (which always seem better coordinated) I'm sorry you had such a yucky experience. The good sounds like it was definitely good though. Vegas is always a fun time! Keep up the great work hon! Hope you have a great day!

Very cool that you were able to meet JLITT and her DH. Maybe the race coordinators will be more organized next year. Have a great day.

Oh that foot massage sounds sooooo good! I bet you enjoyed that!
That was REALLY SWEET of you to turn all the way back to get those brownies, you are a trooper and a true friend.

WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW On the RNR Marathon in Vegas, was this their 1st year in Vegas? I ask b/c RNR marathons have been going on for years. I did my 1st marathon through RNR in San Diego and it was great, everything went smoothly, weather was AWESOME, and the second one was Country Western Marathon (still held by same company just CW) in Nashville. Though me and my sister did it through The Leaukemia Society so they pretty much had everything already planned for us and made sure we got to where we needed to be, etc. Sorry you had to experience this especially your poor husband. I cannot imagine a marathon event running out of water at some stations, how awful.

GLAD TO HAVE YOU BACK, MISSED YA!
Maria

I'm glad the foot isn't the worse for wear! I walked up to fashion show mall, around a lot of it, and all the way back Tuesday. Seriously, what was I thinking?

You should've left the brownies - I would never have known - but I'm glad you didn't & appreciate all that effort!

Wow, what a disappointment. The good stuff sounds really really good, though. Yay for a foot massage, brownies, and friends!
Hope your day back to work is welcoming:)

That is a shame about the race.
You got a lot of walking in, that's great you weren't uncomfortable afterward. Did you have a fun road trip with hubby?

I think all RnRs are probably growing way too fast and the management isn't controlling the issue. Some say for pure greed? If you look at the LV RnR "official" FB page, it has a lot of bad stuff there. Even people collapsing with no aid. I'm pretty sure I won't do another and apparently Sav was pretty well organized. Maybe I just don't like big races.

How did your husband do? I'm sure JLITT62 really appreciated the brownies. You are so sweet! At least it's a very short work week for you.

I've done 3 RnR's now (one marathon, two Halves) and they ran out of stuff at all of them. I don't know whether that means they cut corners or that they don't have good control over people who are handing things out. But to run out of water is not a good thing. People running slower marathons seem most vulnerable. They were out of mylar blankets when I finished (fortunately DH was there with my jacket). I heard lots of complaints from slower marathoners this year in SA that there was little to eat or drink at the finish line and that some of the aid stations ran out of water. Given the heat (which wasn't a surprise) that's really worrisome to me. It is a zoo in the finish area and I suspect many early finishers helped themselves to way more than their share. But the race organizers should either control that or plan for it. IMHO :-)

I hope we'll be seeing a race report from you in the near future. I'm glad your feet held up. That's a good sign.

I had some friends say the same thing about race. They were really bummed out by the whole experience. Which is kind of sad because it was their first RnR.

Sorry it didn't turn out quite the way you envisioned it, but great you got to meet up with JLITT62. I've heard some not so nice things about the LV half marathon from others - hopefully they will work the kinks out, but running out of medals is absolutely HORRIBLE. Poor planning on someone's part - shame.

Well glad you got to meet a sparkfriend!!! That is awesome! It makes things much more difficult if things are UN-organized.....sorry to hear about that. Sounds like a good trip though.

Personally, I've always thought that LV is a huge sewer pit. Absolutely nothing fun about it. However, some enjoy it and to each their own. I didn't realize you drove; wonder how long it took. I met my cousin there a few years ago, before she died. It takes me about 7 hours from SanDiego. (driving the speed limits and stopping to stretch) Some do it in 5 hours.
