A Call from the Podiatrist

Tuesday, November 08, 2011

Yes, I've been keeping up with my Slim in 6. I finished my 3rd day. I slept in this morning so I had to workout this afternoon.
On to the phone call.
He said that he did think it was a fracture but could have been a bone reaction. Not so bad that it actually fractured but there was some injury being fixed. Bone scans show activity.
He said that I should try a 1/4" lift in my shoe on the left (injured) foot and see if that helps the hip height issue. It should also help with the shin splints that I get in my right shin and not the left.
He also suggested I get some Superfeet insoles to put in my running shoes and to perhaps try a light stability shoe.
I'm going to try to pick up a heel lift tomorrow on my way home. I'll see how it does.
Is it Friday yet?

I hope you were able to get some inserts and the lift. I have Superfeet, 2 pairs one for the sneakers and one for the high heels I wear, mostly in my boots.

Yay glad to hear you're getting some answers, not glad to hear that after all the time I've been away you're still having all these foot problems, you'd think with all the advances in modern medicine they'd be able to work out feet wouldn't you!

Sounds like a good suggestion. Does he think that one leg is slightly shorter than the other? My cousin has that problem and has to have special shoes made for him to adjust to his personal body. I really hope the heal works out! I'm always praying that your soreness goes away, you work so hard even through the pain. emoticon

Glad you got some answers. Do you feel better? Asics has a great light stability shoe in the 1160, if you can still find that style. For some reason when they updated the new 1170 they made it more neutral.

I use the Superfeet insoles and I like them -- I use the Berry version.

I have to say that I am skeptical about the lift unless your legs are actually different lengths. If one hip is higher because of leg length differences, then a lift is definitely the way to go. On the other hand, if you don't have a leg length difference, I'd consider an evaluation to determine the true source of the hip height difference. If it is muscular/skeletal imbalances, best to address the root cause through specialized exercises and/or PT.

Some more elliptical and slim in 6

Sunday, November 06, 2011

I decided since my calves were so sore yesterday that I would cut back a little on the elliptical so I did 20 minutes instead of 30. I'm not sure if it was because of the elliptical on Friday or the fact that I was wearing my Skechers shape-ups on Friday. Those shoes really do make you unstable and I only wore them because my clogs were bothering both feet and they are tall enough to balance the boot (on it's final day).
My outer left calf was sore on the elliptical this morning so I'm glad I didn't go longer.
Then I decided I'd start Slim in 6. Yes, not very intense but I thought it would be good to start back slow with the lunges and squats and such. Also, it is low impact which is what I need right now. I did Start it Up and Slim and Limber this morning. I guess that'll be the workout for the next 5 days.
I did not take measurements, but I did take pictures. Sorry about the messy hair and the weird light.

We'll see if this tones me up at all.
I hope everybody is enjoying their extra hour. I certainly am.
Happy Sunday!!

I'm glad Malika was there to help! You're looking pretty toned to me. I know if I had to put up with a boot, I'd use it as an excuse to behave rediculously. You're doing an impressive job of easing yourself back into diversifying your workouts, yay!
I haven't tried those Shape Ups, and now I'm kind of glad. I'm already unstable enough with "Arthur" in my toes and ankles.
Jennifer decided she wanted to try 2 of Billy's new workouts with the resistance bands today. Those workouts are not for the faint of heart, they had us panting and cussing and sweating as much as Bob's! The bands are a little awkward and exhausting, but makes you feel like you got a LOT done. I'll try Ripped in 30 in the morning and report back.
Yes, I wouldn't mind 25 hours a day as long as none of it was work time;)

I would suspect the Sketchers rather than the elliptical. The calf muscles support the back of the ankle and help to bend the ankle as you point the foot. If the shoes were making you unstable, the calf (and lower leg in general) would have had to work more. The elliptical, especially in its default settings, works the butt and the glutes more than anything else, although, of course, the whole leg is involved in stepping.

I have really liked Slim in Six and feel the strengthening has helped me run without injury. I moved on to Keep It Up, then Mix It Up and now I'm doing Shape It Up, which is fairly challenging (at least for me) because you do everything with weights. I havn't tried Tear It Up yet.

Good luck!!! Are you having a boot-burning ceremony?!

Saturday is going to be busy

Saturday, November 05, 2011

Hey all!
He did finally call yesterday evening but of course I was indisposed. He left a message and an email about setting up a time next Tuesday to talk. I emailed him back that 4pm was a good time. I'll be home from work (and not in the bathroom).
I decided to get on the bike this morning so I wouldn't overwork my foot. I ended up with over 13000 steps yesterday emoticon.
I'm going to bake another batch of the leftover Halloween candy cookies since we still have candy leftover. Then we're going to take Grandma out to lunch. Should be a nice day even if it does rain....looking pretty gloomy out there.
Have a wonderful Saturday :-)

DH is frothing at the bit to get it done, but his foot is really bothering him & I told him he'd get no sympathy from me if he didn't stay off it. Yay for Friday

Friday, November 04, 2011

I had planned on trying out the elliptical yesterday afternoon but I ended up waiting around for the podiatrist to call. No call.
This morning I got in 30 minutes. The foot felt pretty good. It feels a little weird in shoes. My ankle wasn't particularly happy after I was done. It got lazy being in the boot. I'll be drawing the alphabet at least once a day with my foot to get the ankle back on track.
I still haven't heard from the doc. He emailed yesterday morning asking for a good time and phone number. I gave him work and he already had cell. The good thing about the Kaiser email system is that I can see if my sent messages have been read. He didn't read my reply. Thanks for nothing, doc. Maybe I'll hear Monday but I'm sort of doubting it.
Still it's Friday and that's a great reason to be happy.
Have a fabulous weekend! :-)

I emailed the podiatrist some questions

Wednesday, November 02, 2011

Here are some questions/issues:
If it wasn't a fracture, what was on the bone scan? I know it can pick up cancer, infection, arthritis, etc. It would be nice to know so I can avoid doing whatever it was again. I don't ever want to be stuck in that boot for two months again. I feel like I have wasted two months for nothing.
I know you just want to dismiss the hip height issue but my right hip is higher than my left. My left shoe shows more wear than my right. I get shin splints a lot more on my right side. My left ankle (outer) tends to get sore. I think there is an imbalance issue that needs addressing.
Do I need a different arch support in my running shoes (other than the ones that come in them)? Should I try a stability shoe? A more cushioned shoe?
I realize that 6 weeks no running/jumping is standard for a fracture but if there was no fracture is it really important to wait that long?
Thank you,
Natalie

So glad you emailed him and got a reply. Hopefully he will get back to you soon with answers. I like your plan if you don't get the answers you need - definitely try to get an appt in sports medicine.

I have an issue with the hips too. I used to get really painful shin splints and no one could explain it - I would get them from walking at a slow pace and as soon as I would start walking and they would last all day and happen all the time. Orthotics didn't help - it wasn't until I saw a chiropractor and they mentioned the hips being out of alignment. It took a few adjustments and they started to go away. I still get out of alignment but don't see a chiro anymore (too $$) - I use these therapy balls and lie on them for a few minutes each day and it seems to work itself out when I start to get slight pain every now and then. I hardly get them now.

Hope he gets back to you with quality answers!

Perhaps the higher hip won't turn out to be a medical issue, per se, but imbalances like that DO affect your running and can lead to pains if not injuries. Even if it isn't covered by your insurance, I would investigate getting an evaluation from a physical therapist or sports therapist with an eye towards identifying what sorts of exercises, etc., will help correct the imbalances. A good exercise plan can really help. It takes time (I've been working on my imbalances for over two years now), but it really does help. I remember when Dee went to her podiatrist, he diagnosed a leg length difference but told her she didn't need to do anything about it. A sports massage therapist told her otherwise, and doing something about it has made all the difference for her.
