I emailed the podiatrist some questions

Wednesday, November 02, 2011

Here are some questions/issues:
If it wasn't a fracture, what was on the bone scan? I know it can pick up cancer, infection, arthritis, etc. It would be nice to know so I can avoid doing whatever it was again. I don't ever want to be stuck in that boot for two months again. I feel like I have wasted two months for nothing.
I know you just want to dismiss the hip height issue but my right hip is higher than my left. My left shoe shows more wear than my right. I get shin splints a lot more on my right side. My left ankle (outer) tends to get sore. I think there is an imbalance issue that needs addressing.
Do I need a different arch support in my running shoes (other than the ones that come in them)? Should I try a stability shoe? A more cushioned shoe?
I realize that 6 weeks no running/jumping is standard for a fracture but if there was no fracture is it really important to wait that long?
Thank you,
Natalie

Here is the reply:
Hi Natalie,

You raise good questions and I'm so glad that you have taken the time to ask. Because you have a number of questions I think it would be better if I give you a call back and address each one to your satisfaction. I will attempt to reach you today or tomorrow

Why he couldn't have taken the time yesterday to answer in person, I really don't know. GRRRRR.

my hips were rotated .5mm away from each other but that small amount put a lot of impact on my left knee. sometimes the pain was so bad the thought of chopping off my leg above the knee with an ax did not seem painful at all! And this was when I was in my 30's and just riding horses, no other physical exercise! My chiro fixed it!

Wow, that is so frustrating! I agree with another commenter - you may be better off with a sports specialist or orthopedist, or even just a different podiatrist.

Sounds to me like you need a sports medicine or kinesiology specialist. I'm behind on reading your blog, but I'm wondering if the physician was trying to solve the problem and not looking at the lifestyle/life goal concerns.

I hope you get some satisfaction

They are very time crunched, but it sounds like you have a doc who cares. Keep us posted on your progress. Hopefully, this will be a big month for you...getting back on your feet...literally!

So glad you emailed him and got a reply. Hopefully he will get back to you soon with answers. I like your plan if you don't get the answers you need - definitely try to get an appt in sports medicine.

I have an issue with the hips too. I used to get really painful shin splints and no one could explain it - I would get them from walking at a slow pace and as soon as I would start walking and they would last all day and happen all the time. Orthotics didn't help - it wasn't until I saw a chiropractor and they mentioned the hips being out of alignment. It took a few adjustments and they started to go away. I still get out of alignment but don't see a chiro anymore (too $$) - I use these therapy balls and lie on them for a few minutes each day and it seems to work itself out when I start to get slight pain every now and then. I hardly get them now.

Hope he gets back to you with quality answers!

Perhaps the higher hip won't turn out to be a medical issue, per se, but imbalances like that DO affect your running and can lead to pains if not injuries. Even if it isn't covered by your insurance, I would investigate getting an evaluation from a physical therapist or sports therapist with an eye towards identifying what sorts of exercises, etc., will help correct the imbalances. A good exercise plan can really help. It takes time (I've been working on my imbalances for over two years now), but it really does help. I remember when Dee went to her podiatrist, he diagnosed a leg length difference but told her she didn't need to do anything about it. A sports massage therapist told her otherwise, and doing something about it has made all the difference for her.

Easing back into shoes

Tuesday, November 01, 2011

In case anybody wants to see what the brownies for the part looked like, here they are:

I got plenty of riding in on Sunday, Monday and this morning. I even did some strength training yesterday since i had taken the day off work for a super long weekend (off today as well).
We didn't have as many trick or treaters as we thought so I made some leftover halloween candy cookies:

I healthified the recipe a little by using whole wheat flour.
Here it is in case you've got leftover candy to get rid of:
recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detai
l.asp?recipe=1863691

I went for my appointment today. I dutifully got there and had an x-ray taken. Then I waited about an hour to see the doc. He even brought me a print out of my x-ray. It showed absolutely nothing. No evidence of a fracture at all. He's not sure if I ever had one. Fabulous...I've been walking around in the darn boot for almost 2 months and I might not have needed it. Yes, I'm pissed. i can ease back into shoes. 3 hours/day for a few days to see how it goes. I can do the elliptical if it doesn't bother my foot. No running for at least 6 weeks. I'm sure that's the advice he gives everybody with a fracture. When I asked if it could have been caused by my other hip being higher...he dismissed it. Doesn't seem to care what caused it. I can try emailing him. I think they were busy but that's still no reason to brush off my questions.
Back to work tomorrow. Still have to bring the boot with me. Kind of silly but I'll do it anyway.

WOW seems like they were brushing you off. YOu are right even if they were busy that should just rush you out. I am very blessed all my doctors take their time and answer all my questions, though I am high RISK for everything and I am sure if something goes wrong (GOD FORBID) they don't want to be responsible.

So happy to hear that the boot is coming off and that there is no fracture!! That's a little crazy about not even being sure there was ever a fracture...so why have you wear the boot then - just in case? I can definitely see how that would make you angry (I'd be too). But the good thing is that there is no fracture and you are almost rid of that boot.

Kind of disturbing that he was just brushing you off too - my doctor does that occasionally and it's annoying. I know they are busy but you are still a patient and deserve to have your questions answered. emoticon

Saturday Morning

Saturday, October 29, 2011

Thursday morning I did get up to do some biking. Good thing because I met my BFF for dinner at the Cheesecake Factory. I tried out their new skinnylicious menu and got the chicken soft tacos without the avocado and crema. Very tasty. I'd order it again. Before that I had my brows and upper lip threaded...ouch. My upper lip still feels a little weird this morning. Hmmmm. After dinner we headed over to Sephora and Bath & Body Works for some retail therapy. A very nice girl's night out. When I got home, my husband was home. All in all a great day.
Friday no workout for me. Too tired in the morning and no time in the afternoon. We were meeting a friend for dinner at the Indian buffet. So tasty and I was very bad. After dinner we walked around Fry's Electronics.
This morning I got in 14 miles on the bike and did the strength training I was supposed to do yesterday. All is good :-)
A couple of loads of laundry to do today, some grocery shopping and baking some brownies for a party tomorrow.
The weekend is shaping up nicely.
Have a good one :-)

Glad to hear that Cheesecake Factory has jumped on board with healthier options. I know they've gotten a lot of flack for their high calorie menu items and lack of complete nutrition info available.

I've never done my lip, but whenever I get my eyebrows threaded they ask me lip too? And I'm all offended like why do I need it? haha

Retail therapy is right up there with exercise therapy for me.

Wednesday Musings

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

I've been good about getting my workouts in the mornings this week. Monday I did do my ST in the afternoon but Tuesday and today I did my biking in the morning. Glad to have it done early but some days it feels so hard.
On my way home from work yesterday my check engine light went on. I had gotten gas in the morning, so I stopped when I could and tightened the gas cap. That didn't help so I headed over to the nearest Toyota dealership to have them check it out. $140 for a diagnostic...fine. I was hoping they'd tell me that it just need to be reset after the gas cap was replaced....nope. Two hours and a total of $500 later my car is okay. Air flow mass air sensor needed replacing. I guess that's why it's been kind of sluggish and nearly stalled a few times recently. Glad to have it taken care of but boy that's a chunk of change.
My husband is a mechanic for Land Rover but he's at Land Rover school this week. He might have been able to fix it had he been around. Just my luck.
I may be getting together with a friend this evening for dinner at the Cheesecake Factory. It's been a while since we've been. No, I won't be getting any cheesecake...don't like it. I guess that's good since it will save me 800 calories. No morning workout tomorrow if we do meet up. The girls stay out a little late ;-)
Foot update: Hopefully the boot will be off by next Wednesday. Not sure though. It's feeling a little sore today. Might just be from the boot but I really don't know.
Kitten update: she was up in our closet last night. I was in bed reading and noticed some movement. Looked up and she was heading through the bedroom into the hall. She stopped and we looked each other over for a couple of minutes.
Happy Wednesday!! Looking forward to the weekend :-)

oh the Cheesecake Factory is my downfall. Even without eating cheesecake the food is so luscious.
Don't even get me started about that sensor for the gas and oxygen. My Honda seems to have it happen every other time I get gas. I replaced it 2 times and then gave up. I am sure you are right about it causing that jerking feeling, but I think there is a problem with gas sometimes. I have had that light come on, just to not come on the next time I start the car up. So I gave up.

Oh maaan car troubles SUCK!! It's the WORST spending a big chunk of money like that on something as boring as car-issues.... just to keep boppin' around safely. Sigh.

You're really lucky you don't like cheesecake!! I'd have a heck of a time NOT getting cheesecake at the factory! But you're right, it'll save you 800+ calories. Not worth it!!

Glad your foot is healing!!

What bad timing with the car; sorry! Enjoy girls' night out - I've heard CF actually has some healthier stuff on their menu now. Crossing fingers for the great boot release!

Weekend Stuff

Sunday, October 23, 2011

Friday night I baked chocolate chip cookies for my friend who is going to Israel.

Saturday morning I got up and did a nice ride on the bike in preparation for the tasty food we'd be having:

Then I got dressed and we went to Taco Bell for a snack since the food wasn't being served until 4pm but the wedding was at 1.

(chicken burrito spreme fresco style)
I have no pics of the wedding which was all in Spanish so I didn't catch all of it, but here is what I had to eat....carnitas and the table setting.

We stayed until about 6:30 and then went home to change into a little more casual clothes and head over to the restaurant for the going away party. I forgot to get a picture of the falafel I had. It was a little soggy...I was disappointed. Dinner wasn't until about 9pm.
We got home very late but I did get up to ride the bike again:

I've been having chocolate shakeology with unsweetened almond milk for the past week as breakfast. I'm going to see if it makes any difference after 30 days.
My husband went out for an 11 mile long run. By the time he got back and showered we were both ready for lunch. We headed to Southern Kitchen and I got turkey sausage, egg whites, hash browns and rye toast. I did eat all the egg whites and half of the rest. He took care of any leftovers ;-)

We stopped at Petco to pick up some kitten food.
Have a great rest of your Sunday.

Sounds like a fun weekend! You looked lovely for the wedding - I've got one in 3 weeks & the ceremony doesn't start til 7 pm! Ugh!

The kitten is doing really well if it's playing with toys - the hiding thing is normal even when they're not feral! You'll be having fun with it in no time. And probably getting scratched up, too.

    That blouse is lovely!
Nice mileage. I'm still thinking about a track stand. I bought Billy's new dvd's, maybe I didn't have to tell you that;) they haven't arrived yet. But my comfy bike needs a new back wheel too, and taking care of that is a pain.
Anyways, love the piks.
The shake is not a bad idea at all, I think I have some that I purposely forgot about because it tastes like dirt, but if I get some chocolate protein shake, maybe I can blend them and use it up. I forget how good dirt makes me feel.
