Time for an Update

Thursday, September 15, 2011

My ST schedule is Monday and Thursday for lower body and Tues and Friday for upper body.
The lower body consists of a lot of different leg lifts (either seated or lying), donkey kicks and I have been doing squats but making sure to put weight on my heels. I've been strapping on a 2lb ankle weight on the good leg to compensate for the boot.
Upper body is all seated except for push ups. I just started the hundred push ups challenge on Tuesday and will be doing it Tues, Fri and Sun.
I've been biking when I can. I got in some yesterday and today...trying to keep some cardio fitness going.
I went ahead and ordered the shorter model of the boot. The large was was making it hard to drive because it would get stuck under the seat making it uncomfortable. I'm lucky it wasn't on my driving leg and that I don't drive a stick. I checked with the podiatrist who's covering for mine and he said it would be fine.

Week one on the boot is nearly done. Hopefully only 3 more to go. My foot has been feeling pretty good. I really haven't noticed much soreness at all. I did get the results from the x-ray last Friday. They were unable to see anything so they figure it's pretty small. I guess when my doc comes back from vacation, I'll probably got in to see him. I'm not exactly sure what's going to be happening. I suspect he'll be surprised since when he left, he thought I had tendonitis.
I think the migraine that I've had for the past few days is finally gone (fingers crossed). It was bad enough this morning that I stayed home from work, but it's good now.
Looking forward to Friday and the weekend.

I hope those three weeks will passes fast for you and you will get back on your feet soon. Is that a stress fracture you have been diagnosed with? Been there, done that... I was doing the New You Bootcamp with my boot on bcz it uses a lot of stability ball that the boot allows to do... I am all heart with you! emoticon

I never thought of ordering a smaller boot. Course, I had broken my leg in 3 places and it was VERY obvious on the x-ray. It was my driving foot, so that made life interesting for 8 weeks in a cast, plus the weeks in the boot.

I knew you would figure out an exercise routine anyway!! Determined Soul that you are!

How About Some Food??

Sunday, September 11, 2011

For dinner on Wednesday, I made mapo tofu:

Friday night we went out to Crawfishaholic. I'm not a shellfish fan and didn't want anything fried, so I got the Korean BBQ beef ribs. Tasty:

We went to the Asian buffet yesterday. Always nice to get some tasty veggies:

Chicken souvlaki for lunch today:

I was able to ride the exercise bike with the boot on Saturday. I got 10.6 miles. I ended up walking around quite a bit because I was looking for pants to wear over roboboot. My foot has been a little sore today. I did get on the bike in the morning but only went about 30 minutes because my foot wouldn't get comfortable in any position. I'll rest it for a few days and see how it feels before biking again.
I was able to get some ankle weights so now I can do some leg raises for lower body work. It wouldn't be good to do side raises with roboboot on one foot and unweighted foot on the other.
I hope everybody enjoyed their weekend. Have a good week.

Ginormous boot!!

Saturday, September 10, 2011

4-8 weeks in that. Now to find a shoe of the correct height to wear on the other foot. The clog is almost right. And I have to find some super bell bottom pants to wear so they can fit over it. Looks like there will be some shopping going on this weekend.
Have a good one :-)

Fracture?? Really??

Thursday, September 08, 2011

Bone Scan Report:
There is evidence for focal fracture in the left mid foot in the
region of the lateral cuneiform or possibly the base of the third
metatarsal (precise localization is not possible on this study).
If clinically indicated, radiographic correlation may be useful
for further evaluation.

No wonder it hasn't been getting any better. I think I have to go in for the full boot. It never hurt very bad at all.
Weird.
On a happier note, tomorrow is Friday :-)

Well it's an answer - and it will heal, which is good. What is the timeline, how long will it need to be stabilized? So interesting I wonder how it happened...
In any case, knowing must give you a little relief and it's not OA...
Stay well this Friday and have a Shabbat Shalom.

My, my, my -- glad the physician went for root cause!

One of my training companions for my first marathon started having foot pains when the runs got very long. She was eventually diagnosed with a broken big toe and had to drop out (of course!) When/how she actually broke the toe remains a mystery.

I twisted my ankle and broke my 5th metatarsal, had to have a plate and 6 screws put in to fix it. Sometimes we brake easy. emoticon

I Got a New Shoe Today

Tuesday, September 06, 2011

Even after being good and icing my foot, and stretching my calves and resting my foot yesterday (I play bass drum with my other foot), my wonky foot was sore today. I even wore the clogs and it wasn't happy. I emailed the podiatrist and he suggested I come in so he could give it a look. He poked and pushed and had me walk up and down the hall. He asked if I had any musculoskeletal issues and I said, I have arthritis in my back and knees (and probably hands). What kind? Osteorthritis. Hmmmmmm. Any hip issues. I said one of my hips is higher than the other and I've been going to a chiropractor to see if anything can be done (and it makes my back feel better).
I walked out with a new shoe:

He said to try it for a week and see if it helps. He said they sometimes put a cast on people's feet but didn't think my problem warranted it...too drastic.
He also made an appointment for a bone scan of my foot to check for arthritis. That way if it was the issue I could just ignore the piddly annoying little soreness and just run on it. Yes, other things could show up on the scan but it would be nice to know what the deal is. Then he said that he will be out of the office next week (away from email, too) but one of his colleagues will let me know the results.
He's off on a week long bicycling trip in Oregon. I sort of doubt he told all of his patients.
It's going to be an interesting week. I hope there are no inspections in the lab. I'm not supposed to wear open-toed shoes ;-)

I hope this solves your problem. Please take care of yourself, and definitely be proactive with that doctor if you don't get the results you want. It seems like many doctors do not understand runners and how hard it is to be away from running and/or be told not to do it. I hope your doctor isn't one of these (mine is supportive, and it helps).

Feel better soon!

I really think in your case the open toed shoe is not going to count!

Hopefully you get good results from the bone scan!

thanks, you just reminded me to make an appointment w/ my chiro for the Monday after my long run!

I'm sorry your having foot issues. I had to wear one of those lovely blue shoes for six weeks once after toe surgery. The worst part of feet problems is you can't run. Hopefully they'll get you back up and running soon.

I am so sorry you are going through this, I will keep praying for you and your foot. What will work say if you can't wear open toe shoes?

Keep us posted. WOW long week bicycle trip, well I guess doctors deserve vacations too! LOL.....

Hope you figure out what is going on. I imagine the unknown part that keeps you from moving forward and even feeling confident that simply resting it will work is not good.

INIT2LIVEIT 9/7/2011 7:19AM

Would work really give you a problem seeing that the shoe is obviously a medical contraption? and no toesies sticking out...
I do hope it gives you major relief and fast. Any answer is helpful, cause then plans can be made based on them. The unknown can make us feel we have no control...
May your Wednesday fly by, hey we are over the hump!
