Holiday Pictures...Yes, It's Food.

I got up and did The Butt Bible Lower Body Level 1. It's a very good body weight lower body workout. Boy my butt was burning!! :-)
After my shower, I started making food. First, I baked some Espresso Hazelnut Chocolate Chip muffins (low carb) for my husband's breakfasts this week:

Then I baked some Oatmeal Sundrop (natural M&M's) cookies:

I boiled up some potatoes and my husband cooked some bacon for German Potato Salad:

We grilled extra lean turkey burgers and some zucchini:


I only ended up eating about half of my plate so I'll be having the other half for dinner.
We played Rockband with my brother for about 2.5 hours. I'm the drummer and I decided to see what kind of calorie burn I would get....252. Not spectacular but I was sweating :-)
I hope the week to come is a good one. At least it will be short.

My boyfriend and I were thinking about playing some rockband after dinner tonight! I dont have an HRM or else I would see how many calories I burn while playing the drums because BOY do you sweat!!

    252 is great! Especially since it's an add-on calorie burn, living life and burnin' it up! The zucchini ==looks amazing! and I'm slow to get excited about zucchini. I don't mind it, it's a very versatile vegetable, but I don't get excited too often. Enjoy the kitchen adventures!

    Wow, everything looks so very deelish! Your potato salad looks better than ours. Ours was good but I think we need to simplify.
I love Sundrops! If I made cookies with them, oh man, that would be a bad idea.
Rockband sounds like a great alternative to amputating your foot. I never would have guessed it would burn that many calories, actually. Great job working up a sweat!

A Nice Holiday Weekend

I guess it's been a while since I've blogged. Yes, I'm still here. I've been wearing the clogs a lot. By Thursday evening the tops of both feet were a little sore because I really haven't broken these shoes in yet. I wore my Doc Martens on Friday. Friday night I tried out the put water in ziploc bags and put them in your shoes and then freeze them to help stretch them. I think it helped. Saturday morning I took out the shoes and removed the ice bags and the clogs did feel a little roomier.
Saturday was also a day of groceries and laundry.
Today we did some cleaning because my brother is coming over tomorrow for a BBQ (indoors on the Griddler). I got in a nice 11.6 mile ride on the exercise bike this morning (foot was a tiny bit sore...not sore exactly....kind of stabby/tingly/nerve weirdness on and off but not for long). I wore some running shoes to see how my foot would feel. Pretty good...a tiny bit sore after walking around a lot in downtown Mountain View. We met my brother for some Mexican food...sorry, I forgot to get a picture of the tasty chile colorodo. My brother needed a new battery for his watch so we went to Sears. We all proceeded to buy some jeans. I got a pair of men's shrink to fit Levi's 501s. I'm hoping I remember the formula correctly...women buy the waist 5" smaller than their hips (I got as close as I could...the smallest they had was 30"). Oddly, I can't seem to find anything on the internet about it.
I promise to get some pics of tomorrow's BBQ goodies.

    I didn't know the shoe trick, how cool! I don't know that formula either. I like men's jeans because I can't figure out why they think women want their jeans to almost go up to their breast bone. Anyway, I hope those worked out for you.

Midweek Update

Hi all!
My husband and I went out on Sunday afternoon and picked up a cheapie exercise bike over at Sears. It didn't take very long to build and I even managed 7 miles in about 30 minutes. It definitely felt good to sweat, but it's no replacement for a run.
Monday my back was complaining for some reason so I decided not to do the Butt Bible. Still kind of cranky on Tuesday, so I rode the bike again...10.6 miles :-)
I talked to the podiatrist on Tuesday afternoon after a lot of email tag. I have been wearing my running shoes (Nike Air Pegasus) loosely tied since my foot started to bother me last Wednesday. The doctor told me I should be wearing a stiffer shoe and suggested I wear clogs. As it happens, I do own a pair of black ones. I've been wearing them today and I must say, my foot feels a lot better in them. They restrict the movement on push off so they should help the top of the foot tendonitis to heal. I wish I had known that last week and I would have started wearing them then.
I woke up with a migraine but ended up having to go in to work because I had to meet with one of our study subjects. Luckily it was an early morning meeting (7am) and I came home after that. I rested in bed for a bit and had another cup of coffee...it feels like it's gone now emoticon
Monday night for dinner, I made tinga de pollo. Yummy spicy chipotle chicken...it turned out really well.

If my back is happy tomorrow, I shall do some Butt Bible. If not, some biking.
I have decided that I will not run in the San Jose Rock and Roll Half Marathon on 10/2. Even if my foot healed today, I wouldn't have time to build up my endurance for that race. Next year.
Sorry this blog is a little scattered....maybe some residual migraine effect.

    Hopefully you will be at it again soon. The exercise bike may actually help you run better once you can get moving again. At least your cardio fitness won't go into the tank!

Glad your doctor told you about wearing clogs, even though you had to deal with the pain for about a week before hearing that clogs are better, but now you can walk around more comfortably! Yay!

    Clogs do help foot issues for sure...they help when my archs start to hurt!

I'm sorry about your 1/2... you will rock and roll it next year for sure, but pushing to get your endurance back will only make other things worse, so you are smart!

    I never thought of clogs for your foot, yay for something finally helping! My dr told me to wear them often because they keep my toes from bending. They do get a lot of relief from that.

I had hoped to say that I did my 11 mile long run, but the foot isn't having any of that. Now it's sore just above the outer ankle and on the top of that side. It was like that yesterday, too. It did do that the last time it was hurt so I guess it's just one of it's phases. The hope of doing the San Jose RnR on 10/2 is pretty much gone at this point unless I can get a good run in next weekend. Too sore to walk (or I don't think I should) or do the elliptical. Feeling depressed. My husband is out running now. I wish I wasn't so envious. Makes me feel like a crappy wife.
Let's talk about something happier, shall we.
About 2 weeks ago, I got a BodyBugg. I was curious how it would compare calorie burn-wise to the FitBit I already had. Here are some stats:

FitBit Average Calories Burned per day : 1617
BodyBugg Average Calories Burned per day: 1771
difference between them: 153
FitBit average steps taken per day: 11216
BodyBugg average steps taken per day: 10335
difference in steps: 881
Pretty similar. These are two not normal weeks for me. I only got in one run and not too much strength training because of my various injuries. The BodyBugg can take up to 10 minutes to decide to turn on once you have it on. That could account for the difference in steps.
How about some food pictures:
Friday night we went out for pizza. There is a place we wanted to try that makes desi pizzas which are pizzas with Indian food toppings. We got a palak chicken pizza...very tasty:

Last night we wanted some veggies so we went out for Chinese. Mu shu pork, BBQ pork with Chinese broccoli and chicken fried rice (probably should not have eaten all that since I'm getting zero exercise). It's a little out of focus, sorry.

I'm hoping the next week brings healing to my foot so I can get back to some running (or at least walking) and I plan to do the Butt Bible 4 days/week according to it's schedule (as long as it doesn't bother my back).

Sorry to hear about your foot still hurting and you aren't able to run. I totally hear ya about looking at others running and being envious of them. I remember when I could play soccer games (which is alot more of sprints) and I could just run run run and then when I got DVT/PE and had to be on blood thinners they said I could not run b/c leg would get swelled up too bad, which it did (trust me, I tried and I was in tears) and then I would see someone running while passing them when driving and I would just start balling in the car, it was depressing, but little by little I just started to jog which feels terrific now it just too patience. I am sure will be out running in no time.

    Haha Love the name Butt Bible! So funny! emoticon Sorry to hear about your foot. emoticon I get that very often when I kick up the miles. I read on Runner's World Website once that it is due to your muscles waking up and getting too much of a workout. I feel for you though, it hurts! I soaked my ankle in epsom salt water every night and kept off it for a few days. Otherwise it would just kick it up again. Grrr... The epsom salt really worked great though! emoticon BTW, that pizza looks amazing! (if it had daiya vegan cheese) Were you able to pick out the toppings to make yourself at home? emoticon

    Hey Nat! i know exactly how you feel with that crappy wife line. that is how i felt when i had to quit running. because i KNEW that my husband would not go out and get the exercise in with out me. sometimes i wish i didnt know so much!

sorry the foot is being such a booger. sometimes you just have to hang back and lay low on the exercise. it's okay to give your body a break!!

  Sorry to hear that your foot is still bothering you. You have every right to be envious of your husband. It really stinks that you have an injury preventing you from something you really want to do.

I've been waiting to hear about your run this weekend. I sure do wish it would have been better news. I (and you) know it will heal and pass, but you can't help but feel down about it. And who wouldn't be jealous of anyone else being able to be out there running? That's not a bad wife. Now if you beat him down when he gets back, well......

Just do what you are able and concentrate on healing for when you can race. The time will come.

    I hope that rest will do it some good. I know how you're feeling with your hubby out for his run; all I can say is that given time your foot will get better or you'll find something else to do.

    Sorry about your foot. I have had a similar experience and it is soooo aggravating not to be able to run!
The Body Bug sounds like a good weight loss tool. I am going to check it out.

Can't believe you actually spent the big bucks on a calorie counter, lol! emoticon I could get a sandbag AND an Ugi for that!

With an injury like that, you can be damned sure of one thing: you ARE officially a runner now! Congrats, here's your first punch. Now, be mad, get depressed, get lots of rest and remember: there's ALWAYS a comeback from these enforced breaks, as long as you let yourself heal. And luckily, there's always another great race just around the calendar leaf. emoticon

    Sorry your foot is still not better. I do hope it gets better soon. That's a lot of calories you burn doing the day. I only wear my heart rate monitor during exercise, maybe I will try wearing mine for a day to see what it says, now I am curious. That pizza looks so yummy. Have great rest of your Sunday!

    Sorry to hear about your foot- perhaps total rest to avoid that stress fracture turning up?? I read your earlier blogs.. I have stress fractures in my upper back, the pain never went away, so I got retired from long distance running..
I had to take years off running- perhaps use a ergometer and give your foot the rest it needs..
Keep off it and let it heal- start up turtle slow when healed- or just be unlucky and get retired permenantly.. Life is choices my friend, your standing at the cross roads.. Make the right choice especially if it hurts to stand on...

being retired sucked.. But now any day I am upright is a great day- I race walk without the high impact.. I had to compromise and found a middle way solution..

    I'm so sorry to hear of your continuing foot problems. Have you every had a gait analysis? It doesn't have to be a fancy program -- just someone filming your feet from behind can provide very useful info as to what your ankles are doing when you run. I had a lot of problems with my left foot earlier this year (after running several marathons in a row) that sound similar to some of what you are describing. My trainer took video with his iphone and from that it was easy to see that my ankle was allowing my left foot to wobble from side to side when I landed on that foot. That helped us figure out a strengthening plan for that leg which (so far at least), seems to have solved the problem. I did have to stop running for several weeks to get rid of the pain so that I could train again.

    I am sorry that things are not going the way you had hoped. At least for the moment - may they pick up!
You are definitely smarter about it than I was. Stopping now is way better for the long term where your body is concerned.

The bodybug was always something I had wanted to try since I saw it on the BL. They both sound fairly accurate. Boy you burn a lot of cals!!! emoticon

Busy Days and Another Shoe Fail

Sunday evening we went for Thai food. There was a Bollywood dance class going on down the street so there were lots of people around and all of the restaurants were crowded. We had to wait about an hour to get a table so we walked around for a while. No dancing, though.
Monday was a busy day at work. We had training on the new mass spec machine. Standing for over 5 hours on the concrete floor of the lab really did my back in. It definitely was not happy. I added insult to injury by going home and doing Butt Bible Lower Body 1. Even though it was all body weight exercises it still made my back unhappy. Iím thinking it was the glute bridges.
Tuesday my back was still a little sore so I decided to defer my run to Wednesday. It definitely felt happier about getting up and walking around at work. No training so I was looking at data and sitting at my desk but I made sure to get up frequently. When I arrived home, I saw that FedEx had delivered a package for me from Roadrunner Sports. I had ordered yet another pair of shoes (call me crazy). The Brooks Dyad 6. These are supposedly the shoe for low arched neutral runners like me. I walked around in them last night and couldn't decide if they were comfortable or not. I took them on a little test run on the treadmill. It felt like the arch was weird and crushing my foot against the top of the shoe. When I took the insole out, I noticed that the arch was pretty far forward and came in pretty far. Also the insole was very thick...nice and cushy but I think more than I need. It really felt like there was not enough height. They were plenty wide. Just weird. Maybe I should have iced my foot afterward.
Dinner last night was Chicken Tagine. Just a couple of chicken breasts cut up and sauteed. Then I added a can of rinsed garbanzo beans and a jar of tagine sauce (my husband picked up at Cost Plus/World Market on Monday). We had it over whole wheat couscous (organic even). Very tasty.

My back felt great this morning. I tried the shoes again this morning and but I think they had already aggravated the tendon on the top of my foot. I even went as far as pulling out the insole and putting in one from my Nikes. That didnít help. I put my regular shoes (Nike Air Pegasus) on by it was too late. Run cut short so I wouldn't do any damage. Ice bath for 15 minutes. Obviously not "my shoe".
Iím hoping my foot is happy by Friday so I can try another run in my regular shoes. Iím thinking Iíd like to go outside for that run. The treadmill hasnít been my friend. I donít know if Iím just running weird on it and itís making things worse or what. I was fine running outside on Sunday. Itís looking less and less likely that Iíll be running my HM in October. Not even sure if Iíll be running the December one in Vegas.

    Sorry to hear your shoes didn't work out. I hate buying new running shoes. emoticon With all the miles we track in them, it's like a comfort blanket and forms to our foot shape. Then when they go bad, it's like losing a friend. Newer shoes just never seem to be the same. emoticon Until a few months after using. At least you got yours from Roadrunner Sports, they have a great return policy right?

    Too bad about your shoes. I have been running on Nike Air Pegasus for years and years. I switched to Nike Zoom Vomeros because I liked the little lighter weight. Of course, both there Nikes are neutral cushioned shoes.

My advice is stick with the shoes that work, Nike Air Pegasus. If you have money burning a hole in your pocket you can try the Zoom Vomeros. But my foot is not your foot. The Zoom Vomeros are a softer ride than the Pegasus.

The Chicken Tagine looks yummy! Good luck making your feet and back happy!

    Up until recently I never understood the whole shoe thing - but with more mileage I totally get it and know when I need new shoes. Good luck in the quest for the right one. I hope your foot feels greta today!

    Make sure you return the shoes and get your money back for them! You seem to have terrible luck with shoes...
You can still do the HM, maybe treadmill running isn't for you, when you think about it its not a great surface to run on...

    I can totally identify you with the multiple shoe purchases. I thought I was in the right shoes, but now the more I read about cushioning possibly causing more injuries, I'm wondering if that could be what caused my knee/foot issues. I should have a more minimalist pair I read about waiting for me when I get home today.

RRS is dangerous - because it only takes 1 day for stuff to get to me here in CA. I just can't stop sometimes! I'm running a 5K down near an RRS store this Saturday, so I'm thinking I might go in and see what they say about my shoe choices.

I really hope you get everything figured out soon!

    Boy can I relate to the shoe problems. I have a very, very wide foot and it is extremely difficult for me to find shoes that fit my feet without hurting them. Hang in and keep trying shoes until you find one that really works, then buy 3 pair because you know once you find one that works they discontinue it. Hope your foot feels better soon.

    I think you should get fitted locally. It is hard to tell from descriptions whether a shoe will work. That certainly was the case for me. I order online, but only shoes that I am familiar with.

    Those dang feet! Well really, dang shoes. Hope you work this out soon. I am happy you are being smart and not pushing, though, and are realistic about the possibility of not being able to race this year. Hope you can, but know that if not, it is still possible in the future.

I walk by a Cost Plus on the waterfront, but I haven't been in there in years and forgot about those sauces, I gotta check that out!

It's so frustrating trying to figure out all this stuff. But you gotta take care of your body. Still, you've got 5 weeks & you can do a lot of walking.

    Yum! Big time on the food, looks deeeelish! Sorry to hear about the shoe fail, that really stinks. And then your foot starts up again, too... emoticon I think I'm gonna be a Nike girl for a while, I love the new shoes so much! Seems like Asics did something weird to their shoes where the heel is now so wide compared to my old pair. At least they don't hurt.

    BOO on the shoes!!! That's not good! Are you able to return them??? I know the feeling - putting on the "wrong" shoe is almost instant! I'm sorry they didn't work out for you - I was excited for this pair!

The food looks killer and I hope you're back to 100% soon!! An outdoor run sounds absolutely fabulous! I hope you're able to get it done!!

    Dang girl! don't give up yet! I understand the difficulty in finding a shoe. I went through a few before really knowing my feet. Perhaps the aggravation was still there? I am sure that you will work things out. How are the roads around your home - runnable?
