Wonky Foot and CLX

Monday, August 08, 2011

I really wish I knew what was up with my foot. Today I wore my Nike Air Pegasus shoes (smaller size because my feet have gotten bigger in the last year emoticon) and the top of my foot that had been sore was feeling good but both of my arches were sore and the wonky foot was sore near my ankle. I noticed when I was walking that I was over-pronating...pretty much along the inside of my foot. That didn't use to happen in those shoes. Something really weird is going on with my feet recently.
When I got home from work, I changed into my Asics Kayano (stability) and my feet felt great. Normal walking. I don't know what has happened to my gait. Is it because my feet have expanded and gotten bigger from age (I know I'm only 45 but your feet to get bigger as you get older because the ligaments stretch out)? Is it from the chiropractor trying to even out my hips? I don't know..but it's weird.
Experiment number 1: wear the Asics tomorrow and see how my feet feel...apparently I need to keep a variety of running shoes around for my weird feet.
I did do my CLX today.

Lean Circuit 2
Sumo Squat Anterior Delt Lift - W 12.5 R 12
Double-Arm Row, Single-Leg Lift with Band - W 17.5 R 12
Single Hamstring Curls with Lateral Raise - W 12.5 R 8 (will go back to 10 pounds next time)
Runner's Lunge with Double-Arm Row - W 17.5 R 12
Lateral Raise with Abduction with Bands - W 10 R 12
Plank with Single Arm Row - W 15 R 12 (10 on wrist started to bother)
Reverse Lunge, Lateral Raise - W 7.5 R 12
Posterior Deltoid Raise with Leg Lift - W 7.5 R 10
Squat with Double-Arm Anterior Delt Lift - W 5 R 12
Those plank rows really do a number on the stabilizing hand. Maybe because they've been sore from arthritis recently.
I also decided to do the 200 situps challenge. I did my test on Saturday and did 63 situps. That put me at week three. Todays sets: 21, 27, 21, 21, 35.
Any explanations about my weird feet/shoe issue would be welcome. I supposed I could go to a podiatrist but then I'd have to have two appointments because at Kaiser you have to be referred. Sort of a pain.
I'm hopeful that the stability shoes will help. I visited the Mizuno website and did their shoe fitter program. It's actually really neat. They ask a lot more questions than the other sites. It determined I was a slight over-pronator. Probably true since the 3 professional fittings I've had can't quite agree= 2 say neutral, 1 says slight over-pronator. I'm thinking I don't always over-pronate but that's a guess because I can't look at myself running.
Enough weirdness for one day.
Have a great night :-)

Sounds like we might be going through similar running ailments. I've got a followup tonight with a chiropractor who thinks me uneven hips might be causing my ongoing knee pain and plantar fasciitis in one foot.

I've tried changing my shoes to see if it helps, but can't seem to find a consistent answer to my problems.

I hope you get over this little bump soon to get back on the road to being ready for that half!

I agree with WONDERWOMAN, maybe a trip to the foot doc is in order. Perhaps some special insoles or something. Sorry you are bothered by the wonky foot (and I love that word too - for a minute I had Willy Wonka on the brain). Hope you figure it out. I always heard your feet shrink when you get older, but who knows. emoticon

I hate it when somebody suggests that inflammatory foods could be triggering arthritis and other stuff, but sometimes it helps if I lay off bread, dairy and soy for a while. Its definitely not a cure, tho, and may not apply to you, but I just thought i'd mention it. I have a variety of shoes, too, my feet and calves seem to like change.
Are you over pronating because of the soreness, or is that just natural for you?

I really think you should go the podiatrist route. We can all guess and be "Monday Morning Armchair Doctors" - but with all the wonkiness (I love that word) and the fact that you are training for a HM, it is probably the best, healthiest thing for you and your feet. It will most likely reduce your confusion and stress about this issue. Remember how long you contemplated the chiro and how well that turned out?

I've never had much luck with Nike. Something about the arch throws my foot off. It is strange that your foot has grown in the past year. Good job with the CLX and the situp challenge. Is the situp challenge open to all?

Wish I had a suggestion about the feet, but I'm afraid I don't. Sounds like you've gotten some good ones.

Hmm, I'm older than you & my feet aren't getting bigger . . . yet, anyway. They did get bigger when I was in maybe my late 20s or so - I have big feet for my height! I slways assumed it wa because I spent many yrs having to stand while I worked . . . which might also explain why I'm so fond of sitting now . . .

I did the Mizuno foot test and it was spot on. It is neat!
Here is something that I read on runners world, in their forum - neutral runners that do all different kind of distances do use different shoes. Neutral for short runs and light to moderate stability shoes are worn for their long runs. Apparently as the run stretches out the stride/foot strike alters somewhat. Maybe because of tiredness or added flexibility to the foot after running for so long?
It's possible you got some inflammation there that hasn't quite healed yet. Perhaps a question for your Chiro? Can you email him?
If I recall these are all fairly new shoes, I don't think our feet can grow that quickly. Do any of your toes feel uncomfortable in them? That would be a good indication of them being too small.
Hope this is of some help. Feel good!!!

hope you get it figured out soon!

It could be that with your feet getting larger, the arch support in those smaller shoes is no longer in the correct position.

I find that running has enabled my forefoot to spread out. I can separate my toes a lot more and get a better push off. So I need wider running shoes, but not necessarily wider street shoes. I still wear the same size in street shoes, but much bigger running shoes to allow my feet to move and flex (and swell when they are hot.)

It does sound like your arches need strengthening -- wobbly ankles can be a symptom of that. (The arches are really supported by the muscles in your lower leg as well as the foot itself.) Do your feet point straight ahead when your run? Turning your feet outwards puts pressure on the arch.

My Foot Does Not Like The Treadmill

Sunday, August 07, 2011

My foot felt great this morning. I put my running shoes on and walked around the house...still feeling good. I even jogged around the living room a couple of times..still feeling good. I put on my exercise clothes and turned on the treadmill. I decided I would not try to go running on the trail for 9.5 miles but just try to get a short run in since it had been a week with the sore foot. I started out slow (2mph) and it was good, sped up to 2.5mph and still okay, turned it up to 3 mph started okay and then I could feel the tiniest bit. I had decided on a 20 second run/40 second walk pace to ease back in (I was originally going to go 30/60 but the Galloway Ultimate 10K app I was listening to didn't have that option so I chose the closest). It felt a little bit sore on the first run so I tried loosening my shoe laces a little, still a little sore on the second run interval so I walked for a minute (still a little sore) and got off. I went downstairs and tried jogging in the living room..a little sore but less than on the treadmill...hmmm....weird.
I decided to get on the elliptical. I got in a total of 6.1 miles today. Not the 9.5 I had hoped for but it did burn a nice 602 calories according to my Polar.
I plan to elliptical and strength train. On Thursday I'll try another run on the treadmill (maybe) and see how it feels. Next Saturday I hope to do my 9.5 mile run....outside. I may or may not actually finish my HM training program before my HM in October but I will do the best I can.
In a few minutes we're heading over to the in-laws to get a family picture taken. I think we are going out to dinner after that.
Not a bad Sunday, just not quite the Sunday I had in mind.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and have a great week!!

I am sorry to hear that the pain in the foot continues! Feet are funny appendages, though. My mom and I have the "same" pair of running shoes and same size, everything. Whenever I wear hers to run, however, my feet start hurting and my knees are sore. The smallest things can change how well we feel during a run I guess. You will do great on your HM, though! I agree with JLITT62, 10 mi run is pretty darn good prep for the 13.1. The adrenaline will have you going so fast, you'll think your feet have wings!! emoticon

Hey...Friday Came and My Foot Feels a Lot Better :-)

Friday, August 05, 2011

I missed blogging about two CLX workouts. I did Lean 3 on Wednesday and when I got home from work today, I did Lean 1.
Lean Circuit 3
Squat with Cross-Body Chop - W 12.5 R 12
Reverse Lunge and Arnold Pres - W 10 R 10
Chest Fly with Hip Lift - W 10 R 12 (will try 12.5 pounds next time)
Kneeling Overhead Press and Center Crunch - W 10 R 10
Push-Up Side Planks - W 4 toes 8 knees (wrist bothering me)
Dead Lift Frontal Press - W 10 R 10
Traveling Push-Ups - R 2 toes 10 knees
Chest Fly, Abduction - W 10 R 10
Army Crawl - R 12

Lean Circuit 1
Single-Calf Raise, Bicep Curl - W 12.5 R 10 (hoping that doesn't bother my foot later)
Tricep Push-Ups - R 10 knees (arms really tired today)
Split Lunge with Biceps - W 12.5 R 10
Stationary Runner's Lunge, Double Triceps - W 7.5 R 12 (will try 10 pounds next time)
Bicep Curl with Hamstring Curl (right and left) - W 10 R 5 each arm
Plank with Single-Tricep Extension - W 10 R 10
Reverse Lung, Double-Arm Bicep Curl - W 10 R 12 barely
Supine Tricep - W 15 R 10
Sumo Squat Calf Raise with Bicep Curl - W 10 R 10 (hoping that doesn't bother my foot later)
My foot was feeling a lot better today. A little sore near the ankle but that might be because I thought I should put my Superfeet inserts in my shoes today for a little arch support....the thought being maybe it would make my foot happier. I'm not sure if it did. When I took those shoes off after I got home from work, my foot felt much better. So no Superfeet.
The workout today did have some calf raises so I'm hoping that doesn't end up bother the extensor tendon on the top of my foot that was bothering me before. It definitely didn't hurt at all while I was exercising so I take it to be a good omen. I'm icing my foot right now just to be safe.
It was a busy day at work. We ended up moving the new fluorescence detector over to the old machine. I will have to run it on Monday to make sure it's doing what it's supposed to do and that I tightened all the connections good enough so there are no leaks. Then some more method development since this detector appears to be a lot move sensitive than the old one.
Trying to decide what I want for dinner. Since it's Friday, we'll be going out. Hmmmm...
Have a great night and an excellent weekend!!

Today's Run----Fail! (Warning...rant!)

Wednesday, August 03, 2011

I don't think I mentioned it but at the very end of my run on Sunday, the top of my left foot started to feel sore during the run intervals but okay when walking. I was nearly done so I just finished up the mileage. It was a little sore the rest of the day but I figured that I may have just tied that shoe a little tight. I was also wearing the Nike Lunar Eclipses because I wanted to give them another shot before deciding they weren't for me. I had worn them for the two short runs on Tuesday and Thursday. They still made my right shin a little sore and did so on Sunday, too. I think I give up on those shoes.
My foot was still a little sore yesterday so I gave it the day off. Today it was barely sore so I thought I'd give it a whirl in the shoes that had been making me feel the best...Nike Air Pegasus. Maybe there is something weird about the treadmill because even though I had been walking around the house and didn't feel anything, as soon as I started walking on the treadmill my foot started feeling sore. I attempted the first run interval, but it got even more sore so I stopped. By this time, it was too late to try to do my CLX so that will wait for the afternoon. I did ice it and took and ibuprofen.
I am thinking I will skip all the short runs this week and just do the long one on Sunday. Hopefully it will be feeling better by then. Otherwise, my whole training schedule is messed up. Boo!
I'm sad because I was really itching to run today. Oh well. At least it feels good right now. We'll see how it is once the ibuprofen has worn off. Actually after I iced it and took my shower, it felt pretty good so I'm staying positive that it will be happy by Sunday.
There should be no problem keeping up with the ST because it's pretty stationary.
They're repaving the streets in our neighborhood including ours this week starting today. I'm hoping that I'll be able to find a place sort of close by to park when I get home. It's not that I wouldn't walk farther, but walking around at 5am is a little sketchy sometimes. I wish they had done this when we were on vacation, but it never seems to work out that way.
Enough ranting. On a happier note, it's Wednesday!! Halfway through the week is always a good thing. We'll be having some whole wheat pasta and turkey meatballs for dinner...comfort food and healthy, too.
I hope you are all having a great week!! Keep up the good work :-)

I have a couple of funky foot/knee issues and I'm still hoping that strength training. IT band stretches, foot massages and getting more pounds off will free up some room to re-engage with running. I'm not there yet.

I had a foot massage with a pedicure (my 2nd ever) while on vacation. It was extremely therapeutic for the ball and arches of my feet. Hmmm, pedicure therapy, 22 bucks or so every two weeks* . . .starting to sound good.

* I haven't checked local prices or found a good place in town yet.

I just went through something similar with my back. Running didn't do it, but I still had to stop all activity and ice it for about 4 days. Finally on Monday I was able to start running again. Definitely rest it. It's better to take a couple days off, than to push through and end up with an even worse injury that could "bench" you for weeks or longer.

I hope it feels better soon!!

Well, that's a downer! Probably resting it is the best idea. My run this morning was supposed to be a tempo, but with 94% humidity, it became a chore just to keep going. But I did 6.5 miles even if they weren't fast. At least the temp was only in the low 70s with a pretty nice breeze off the lake. Hope the foot feels great by Friday. Happy Hump Day!

Sorry about the run-fail, altho I do think it's a win since you didn't run thru the pain, but I know how frustrating it can be, too.

Sometimes I'll feel a little something in my knee & can't figure out if it's a normal ache or something else, which is part of why I chose the treadmill over outside today, despite being great running weather - because I thought maybe I felt some twinges on sunday's run & maybe because it was on the rd . . . But gotta run on the rd in Vegas!

I've been waking up too early the last couple of days, but still feel a whole lot better. My body is no longer one tight knot!

And while I feel less bloated today, sometimes it's like the weather - just wait 5 minutes!

The wisest thing to do with pain is take some rest. Hopefully the ice, ibuprofen and rest will clear this issue up soon.

Sorry about the disappointing run, better luck next time, they can't all be great. I think I would toss out those shoes that are causing your problems. Sounds like a terrific dinner for tonight, what time should I be there, lol. emoticon

It didn't happen but it isn't a failure. You stopped because it would have been unwise to continue. Don't worry about falling behind. Pick it up wherever you are, and know that you can do this. emoticon

If construction ever works out when you are not home, or not having to go to work that day... buy a lotto ticket!

That stinks that the Lunar Eclipses seem to give you issues but at least you have another pair to wear! What names for sneakers, huh? I hope your foot feels better soon and your training schedule stays intact!

Busy Monday

Monday, August 01, 2011

I definitely did not get enough sleep last night. My FitBit said 4 hours and 40 minutes. Not good. I did get up at 2:30 and do my CLX, though.
Lean Circuit 2
Sumo Squat Anterior Delt Lift - W 10 R 12 (will try 12.5 pounds next time)
Double-Arm Row, Single-Leg Lift with Band - W 15 R 12 (will try 17.5 pounds next time)
Single Hamstring Curls with Lateral Raise - W 10 R 12 (May try 12.5 pounds next time)
Runner's Lunge with Double-Arm Row - W 15 R 12 (will try 17.5 pounds next time)
Lateral Raise with Abduction with Bands - W 10 R 12
Plank with Single Arm Row - W 15 R 12 (4 on wrist started to bother me so next
time I will try supporting myself on another weight to take the strain off)
Reverse Lunge, Lateral Raise - W 7.5 R 10
Posterior Deltoid Raise with Leg Lift - W 5 R 12 (may try 7.5 pounds next time)
Squat with Double-Arm Anterior Delt Lift - W 5 R 12
Very busy at work but think I figured out what the problem with the new machine is. Not sure if we'll just moved the detector over to use on the old one or not. I'll have to consult with my boss later this week.
I am also trying to feel my way around the team leader situation. I guess I should put a formal message up on the message board announcing my arrival.
Had a Chiropractor appointment this afternoon. It's nice getting a little massage. I think my hips are even starting to even out.
For dinner I tried out a new recipe that I found on for "Absolutely Perfect Palak Paneer." I modified it by using:
2 tablespoons of oil instead of 6
3 serrano chilies instead of 2 dried red chilies
1 tsp ground ginger instead of 1 tbsp grated fresh ginger
6 oz non-fat greek yogurt instead of 3/4 cup sour cream
16 oz bag of frozen spinach instead of 3 pounds fresh
14 oz (whole package) extra firm tofu instead of paneer or ricotta cheese

It turned out nice and spicy and creamy. Definitely a repeat :-)
Happy Monday night!! I better get to bed soon so I have more than 4 hours and 40 minutes of sleep tonight.

That looks so yummy; I am glad to hear the non-fat greek yogurt substitution worked out! Greek yogurt is so versatile, and delicious . . . I am not doing so well with this vegan conversion, lol, there are just some things I don't want to give up. Awesome job on the CLX! I hope to join you in spirit tomorrow AM with some yoga and weight lifting! emoticon emoticon
