I'm Back

Wednesday, May 11, 2011

Sunday morning I finished week one of the Galloway 5K training. Then we drove down to LA for the funeral of my oldest friend's father. A very sad occasion but I did get to see my sister and have a Mother's Day dinner with her. After the funeral, I took my husband to my parent's wall crypt. I'm surprised I remembered the number as it's been 10 years since I was last there.
The funeral was on Monday but I knew I wasn't going to be in any shape to drive back up here, so we stayed the night and drove back on Tuesday.
Tuesday morning we were all set to use the tiny hotel gym. Just as we were going to ask at the front desk for the key, two people entered the gym. It only had 3 pieces of equipment and some weights, so we knew we were out of luck. We decided we'd just run/walk on the street. So down Sepulveda Boulevard we went and around the corner onto Ventura Boulevard. I was listening to my Galloway app and it ended when we hit Land Rover Encino (about 1.9 miles away from the hotel). Then we walked and did a little running back. A very nice workout. After a relatively good breakfast at Denny's (I got egg whites, English muffin dry, chicken sausage and turkey bacon...I ended up having only 1 slice of the bacon) we headed back home.
It was definitely nice to be back and see my kitty and sleep in my own bed. I totally did not want to get up and go to work this morning. I ended up not doing my workout this morning but that's okay. It ended up being a sort of short day because we were trying to draw blood from the fellow that I work with but we couldn't get enough tubes..her vein collapsed (as sometimes happens). We'll try again tomorrow. Since I didn't have to do all the spinning in the cold room today, I was able to leave a little early. I did Jackie Warner Xtreme Timesaver Training with 3 pound weights since I haven't done any weights for a while. Whew...I forgot how much that workout made me sweat. Then I hosed myself off and went to the Chiropractor for an adjustment. A little sore now, but that is to be expected. I will be getting up in the morning to do my run..It's pretty warm around here and it's much better to get the exercise in during the early morning hours.
Happy to be back. I've got some whole wheat spaghetti on the stove and turkey meatballs in the microwave (no time to go shopping). Have a happy Wednesday night. I missed you all.

Missed you too. Good for you for getting that run in! I'll bet there are lots of nice stretches to run down in L.A.

Nice to read about your workout with Jackie, too. I'm quite impressed with her Xtreme Abs, so I've kind of been considering looking into her other vids...

Welcome back! Sounds like you're doing great with the Galloway plan. I've been having tummy issues again the last few times I've tried to run :( And while I've now lost the 5 pounds I gained over Easter/Passover, I'm just feeling totally unmotivated and blah. I did go and get the Biggest Loser Yoga DVD the other day but won't have time to try it until tomorrow. By the time I get home from CCC I have no energy left to do anything. Thank goodness tomorrow is Friday - I'll be so happy to have a day off! Woohoo!

We missed you too! Sounds like it was a good visit for a sad occasion. It's weird how such things can be good - getting together with family & friends. All the cousins & my brother were at my sunt's funeral cept me & my sister.

Haven't been able to get my runs in this week due to illness & I'm missing them.

Jackie is tough, but I like her!

sorry that you had to make that trip, but it was good that you were able to see family, friends and spend time wtih the Hubby! it's great that he is running with you.
I am glad that you are taking a chance on the Chiropractor. I really hope it helps out. it is hard when you have those irritating pains and cant seem to get the "regular" docs to figure them out.
As i was lazily spreading cookie dough in to a pan yesterday, i though how ashamed you would be to present my creation as dessert to your friends. but i did, and even though it wasn't pretty and barely presentable, it tasted GRRRRRReat! it's already too stinking hot to spend time in my kitchen making all those little balls and opening and closing the oven a gazillion times. haha. thats my story and i'm stickin' to it!

Yes, I'm Still Here...Just Busy

Saturday, May 07, 2011

Friday morning I did do my Galloway walk/run for 2 miles. The back felt good. I was tired, though. I only got about 4 hours of sleep the night before. Work was busy and had lots of trips to the cold room. Only slight tingly from that.
I saw the chiropractor that afternoon and he showed me the x-rays. I have mild scoliosis and my spine is also twisted making one hip higher than the other. The plan is to go 2 times a week for 2 weeks and then once a week for a month as long is there has been improvement. That sounded reasonable to me. It was definitely weird having an adjustment.
On Thursday night I had dinner with my best friend for her birthday. I baked her some gluten free chocolate chocolate chip cookies:

Friday night I baked the gluten free red velvet cake for the party today.
Here it is with just the middle frosting:

All frosted:

And decorated:

We just got back from the party. Everybody had a good time and the cake was a success :-)
I am going down to LA tomorrow for a funeral on Monday. The father of one of my oldest friends died on Wednesday. A very sad time. But also nice because I will be seeing my oldest sister tomorrow and can celebrate Mother's Day with her.
Have a great one and I'll talk to you on Tuesday (or Wedesday).

really hope the chiro helps you. When I first went, I had a lot of left knee pain and it was because my left hip was rotated down 5 degrees or something vs the right hip and caused more pressure on the left than the right. Was so glad when that went back to where it belonged, knee stopped hurting!

Love the pic's

Damn, I was almost going to be in south CA myself - learned Friday night that my aunt had died - I was really torn about going, but the funeral is today & it just didn't really give me any time to even think of going. Even if I had, I probably would've come back on a red eye tonight, since DH leaves for a business trip to CA tomorrow - oh, not to mention it was in San Diego. Anyway, again, glad I'm not there cause I'm in pre-TOM hungries & it all looks wonderful.

Busy Day Yesterday and Today

Thursday, May 05, 2011

I had no time to blog yesterday so here's the recap.
I thought about doing run/walk in the morning but I was exhausted so I slept in.
Lots of running around at work and then it was off to see the chiropractor. He asked a lot of questions and took some standing x-rays. He did some pushing me around to see if it would make me hurt..not happening. He did say that my hips are uneven and that he thinks one leg is longer than the other. He also thinks that some of the back soreness may be from the arthritis. Not sure about the butt yet. I will go back on Friday to go over the x-ray results and hear what his plan is. He did say that I should do what I usually do, so I went home and did day 2 of the Galloway ultimate 5K (somehow the app skipped day 1 and I didn't realize until I was done). It felt great. No pain at all while running...a little sore this morning but not sure what it's from since it's all very random.
We had some Trader Joe's Chinese type foods for dinner: pork bun (yes, I bit in before the picture was taken..I was starving), stir fry veggies and chicken wontons. Very tasty.

I mixed up some gluten free cookie dough..chocolate chocolate chip with a little added cinnamon and cayenne for my BFF's birthday today. I will bake them when I get home and get a picture then.
I'm fasting for a blood draw right now. I hope my boss comes in soon so we can do this already. I'm starving.
Have a good one!!
Happy Cinco de Mayo!!

It's Tuesday

Tuesday, May 03, 2011

Another cold and busy day at work. The warmer the weather outside, the colder it is inside. Definitely true.
My butt definitely feels sore when it's cold. Very odd. I made an appointment with a chiropractor tomorrow for a consultation. Hopefully he can figure out what is going on.
Even though I didn't do any elliptical or treadmill, I still have managed to get in over 11000 steps so far today. Lots of walking up and down the stairs at work. Then I had to deliver some samples to somebody at Stanford. The parking lot was at least 1/2 mile from the building so I got it a bit of walking there as well.
For dinner tonight, we tried Trader Joe's Chicken Asada. We had it as tacos on Trader Joe's corn and wheat blend tortillas. Vegetarian refried beans on the side. Quite tasty.

Then I baked some low carb spice muffins for my husband to take for breakfasts.

Time to go and roll my butt and back. A little sore right now.
Have a good night!!

The food looks good! Hope the back thing gets solved. I'm thinking you might be disappointed with any recommendations to take it easy -- but that's merely a postponement. Having my leg in a cast and gaining weight for 10 years before getting thyroid medication has taught me that an interruption doesn't mean that it's over. All you want to have over is the pain and discomfort!

I think Nat should put out a self help/cook book:
How to eat healthy every night of the week for the busy person.

You are such a role model for me, I don't know how you do it! I don't want to move in to eat, I want to be your apprentice and learn what you do... and maybe bottle some of that "get up and go" that you have...

What Happened to the Weekend?

Monday, May 02, 2011

For those of you wondering, yes, I did do the elliptical on Sunday morning. I originally planned on 30 minutes which turned into 3 miles which turned into 3.5 miles (42) minutes. I definitely felt good while I was on it, but somehow I don't think it agrees with my back/butt. Later in the day they were a little sore but by bedtime I felt fine. This morning and most of today, they've been sore. Not sure if it was caused by the elliptical or because I slept funny (I woke up with a cat on my chest and I was kind of in a weird position). My plan is to rest today and maybe walk tomorrow. If I'm feeling good on Wednesday, I may try running. My back may just prefer it. It's different muscles and not a twisting motion like the elliptical.
Yesterday morning we took Malika in for her rabies and FVRCP vaccinations. Unfortunately, she also had some worms...maybe picked up in the garage. We don't let her out of the house otherwise. She was not a very happy kitty when she got home but is doing fine now.
We decided to go to House of Falafel for lunch. I had my usual, the falafel plate. We also got some fries (not pictured).

I only had 3 falafel balls and my husband had the rest.
I baked some superdoodles (snickerdoodles with cinnamon chips). Some I kept as is to give to some of my dialysis guys. The rest, I added chocolate chips to for a cinnamon and chocolate cookie extravaganza. We tasted them last night...yum!!

Another busy, cold day at work. At least I did not need to go into the cold room. It seems the hotter it is outside, the colder it is inside the hospital. Crazy!
I finally tried out my Cricut cake with some frosting sheets that they sell. I still need some practice but at least I've got an idea of how to use it. The sheets are very fragile, so I tore some of the edges accidentally. I'm hoping to get some good designs to put on a cake this weekend.

Tonight's dinner is a rehash of last Tuesday. Trader Joe's jalapeno chicken sausages and Alexia sweet potato fries. Maybe another veggie. I'll ask my husband when he gets home.
Happy Monday!

SUPERDOODLES! They look great, as does the falafel plate; totally yummy. 42 minutes on the elliptical is AWESOME. The elliptical is very difficult for me, stamina-wise; running is easier. I hope to be able to do 40 minutes on the elliptical soon!!

I didn't used to like cinnamon, but I got myself used to it by pairing it with chocolate. Great combo!

Hope the back is better today. Good job on those cricut cake cutouts, those look great. I don't have the cricut cake, just the regular cricut, but I hear some one others talk about the cricut cake and it takes time to master the skill of peeling them off the sheet. Those cookies look so good and I bet the smell and taste was even better!

Going to have to try falafels they look tasty!
So do the cookies though... I was thinking about getting my mentor teachers something to say thank you for letting me mess up the flow of your lessons to practice teaching and all your baking has inspired me I'm thinking I might make them some cookies, definitely cheaper then buying boxed chocolate!

    Hi Nat!
i think those ellipticals are a hard work out. might be that until you have used it regularly for several months that you will always get some aches from it, if it is a muscle that is aching. i would think that the pain would lessen over time/use of the machine as the muscle gets stronger.

the falafal balls look interesting. sort of like a "hushpuppie"? (seasoned and deep fried cornbread ball).

and the cookies, oh yummy goodness! i'll take a half a dozen with a glass of cold milk please!
