Busy Tuesday

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

This morning I had to go into work fasting. We're doing another experiment and we are often our own test subjects. I had 10 tubes of blood collected (the little 3ml lavender tubes). My boss actually drew it. They were short staffed in the dialysis unit so we couldn't get anybody there to do it. After both of our blood tubes were stashed in the fridge, he bought me a cup of coffee. He's actually very nice. After a few tasty swigs of coffee, I brought the blood tubes upstairs to spin down for plasma. The only problem with the 3ml tubes is that they don't have any gel separator in them so you have to pipet the plasma out very carefully.

While it was spinning down, I headed back downstairs and had breakfast...matzo with almond butter. Boy, that tasted fabulous! I must have been hungry ;-)
I spent the rest of the day between the second and fourth floor labs dealing with our plasma. Still more to do tomorrow.
My back was tingly today along with the whole left side of my body. Weird. It's not tingly now. My back is a little sore, though. Not sure if that's from having been tingly earlier or from doing supermans and bicycle crunches this morning or a combination of all of it. I did pick up a heat pad on my way home and I'm going to test it out very soon after I've rolled my butt on the foam roller.
Dinner tonight was Trader Joe's jalapeno chicken sausages, Alexia sweet potato waffle fries and some cucumbers.

I'm very happy that Passover is done with for the year.
Have a great night and a wonderful Wednesday!

I am afraid to have my blood drawn. I have to look away or I get this weird feeling in my stomach, more than likely it is my nerves. I must try that sausage it looks so good. I have a coupon for the Alexia sweet potatoe fries that I need to use before it expires. I love those. Hope the heating pad works for you.

I use the Icy Hot Heating pads that you buy at drugstore or grocery store. You wrap them around you and you are able to move about and do what has to be done. I love them, they help my back out alot.

Have a great day.

You're full of good ideas, like heating pads and carrots! I always do sit ups instead of supermans because they make me walk like an 85 year old the next day, and I need to focus on my gut more than my butt. I'm impressed you can do them. They're killers.
Thanks for your suggestion for the boxed lunches, I have my carrots all ready to go with me. I needed to hear everything else you said, too. Thanks for being such a great friend! When you have HUNGRY days and eat more than you planned, do you still track the calories?

Monday- Some Food Pictures and the X-Ray Results

Monday, April 25, 2011

Last night we ended up going out for Thai food. We got yellow curry chicken, chicken with chinese broccoli, drunken noodles with pork and some steamed rice. Yummy!!

We decided we wanted to walk around the mall afterward but when we got there, it was closed. Luckily, there is another mall across the street that is an open mall so we were able to walk around there. I think only the restaurants were open yesterday.
Today it was back to work. Very busy day and little time for Sparking. I did finally catch up when I got home.
For dinner tonight we had Trader Joe's Santa Maria Tri-tip, oven roasted potatoes with falafel spice, and some cucumbers. The tri-tip seasoning was okay but I'm not sure if I would get it again.

Without any further ado, here is the email from the doctor:
Hi Natalie,
Xray of the lower back shows some arthitis .
Here is a copy.
** HISTORY **:
Pain

** FINDINGS **:

Transitional vertebral body at lumbosacral junction, fused with
sacrum. This level will be labeled as L5.

Disc space narrowing L4-5. Joint space narrowing lower facet
joints.

No compression fractures or subluxations are seen.

** IMPRESSION **:
Transitional vertebral body at lumbosacral junction, fused with
sacrum. This level will be labeled as L5.

Disc space narrowing L4-5.

Signs of degenerative joint disease L4-5 facet joints.

--Lovely, arthritis. That's not what I've been feeling, though. I talked to my coworker (physician) and she also didn't think that arthritis was causing my soreness. She thinks that the muscles just aren't completely healed yet from the twisting with the weights and then the swerving to miss the opossum.
I emailed my doctor back:
Hi Dr. Joshi,
Thank you for the report. What does it mean regarding returning to exercise?
Thanks,
Natalie
Her reply:
Hi Natalie,
I think if you are in pain I would recommend hold off on running and jogging.
Stationary bike should be fine.
Once the pain subsides you may start back on the running slowly and if it keep recurring after that I would recommend a MRI .
Dr.Joshi

So the good news is that running is okay later. I will rest for a couple more days and maybe try some walking on the treadmill. Hopefully I'll be back to running soon.
Have a great night!

Sunday Brunch

Sunday, April 24, 2011

Today my brother and my BFF came over for brunch. I made mazto brei with crimini mushrooms and scallions for me, DH and brother. My BFF is gluten free so she had a mushroom, scallion and mozzarella omelet. We also had some awesome pepper bacon from Whole Foods. Cooked in the oven so it didn't get grease all over the kitchen. On the side were some organic strawberries and pineapple chunks. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed the meal.
As a bonus, we all watched the cute kittens in the backyard.
Not a very exciting day.
Trying to decide what to have for dinner...not sure what is open.
I hope everybody who was celebrating had a great Easter.
I hope everyone else had a great Sunday.

My day was relaxing too. Did the 30 Day Shred then made some cranberry orange scones for lunch. Just puttered around the kitchen. DH and I took the mat eating monster to a local forest conservation area and walked the trails for awhile. They are still snow packed since they are used for cross country skiing in the winter and packed snow melts slowly. I have been smoke free for 10 weeks, and DH 3, so today is the start of the return to healthy eating. I may have been running like a track star, but I have been eating like a sumo wrestler. No more excuses. I had some Greek yogurt and healthy granola so I am pretty much ready to go. Have a great day, Nat!!

A Pretty Restful Day

Saturday, April 23, 2011

We went out for breakfast with a friend of ours this morning. I ordered the Ironman omelet: egg whites, spinach, turkey breast, tomatoes and swiss cheese. It was very good except for the cheese which was not real swiss cheese but the processed kind...yuck!! Luckily it was only on top so I scraped it off. Some very non-greasy hash browns and rye toast completed the meal. I've got another half for Monday morning....no, toast...no point bringing that home. Sorry, I forgot to get a picture.
After dropping off the leftovers at home and sneaking a peek at the 6 (not 5) kittens in the backyard, we headed over to Whole Foods to get the grocery shopping done.
We ended up at a sushi buffet for lunch/dinner. I had some very tasty beef chow fun, asparagus, chicken with cucumber, bok choy , XO rolls (chow fun noodles rolled up and covered with XO sauce and chilis) and fresh pineapple. Again, no picture. Sorry.
Some laundry is in the dryer. I'll have to check to see if it's dry. Maybe see if I can see the kittens again ;-)
Have a great night and a great Sunday (Easter, if you celebrate).

Happy Friday!

Friday, April 22, 2011

I really didn't want to get out of bed this morning. It was very nice having my family snuggled around me. I did get up and even went to work.
It didn't start out very busy at work, but then we had a meeting and that made it busy the rest of the day.
I decided to try walking on the treadmill for a little bit this afternoon. For some reason my back did not particularly like that. Or maybe it was going to feel a little sore anyway no matter what I did since it just does that randomly. I only went a mile and called it a day. No treadmill for the rest of the weekend.
We went out for dinner tonight at El Rancho Steakhouse and I got my favorite, chile verde. Sorry, I forgot to get a picture. It definitely hit the spot.
When we got home, we saw 5 kittens in our backyard. One of the feral cats that we leave food out for, brought her little ones. They are sooooo adorable. I'm smiling just writing this and thinking about them.
A nice way to end the evening, I think.
Have a great weekend!
