Rest Day

Thursday, April 14, 2011

I decided it was in my back's best interest to take a rest day today. I did walk around a lot at work but some days are just like that. It was feeling a little weird today. Sort of a stinging sensation. Not very strong but still there. I don't know if a nerve is slightly irritated or if it's just the back muscles healing. Anyway, when I got home I took a shower and then rolled my back and hamstrings on my foam roller. Feels much better. Hopefully it will last. Tomorrow will also be a rest day.
Nothing else going on. Since it's Thursday, my husband is going to dinner with his model club friends so I will have to come up with something to eat. I just haven't decided yet what I want.
I've got a load of laundry in the washer. Maybe I'll watch a little TV and head to bed early today.
Have a great night. Tomorrow is FRIDAY!!!!

Rest is good. Hopefully it is only a muscle and not a nerve. We found out yesterday that my DH has a pinced nerve in the hip/butt area (DR named it, but I forgot), and that's why he has numb and tingly feeling in his leg and foot on the right side. At least now we know what is wrong with him.

Wednesday 4-13-11

Wednesday, April 13, 2011

I set the alarm for 2:30 this morning because I wanted to get some elliptical in before work. I ended up waking up at about 2:15 and managed to escape from bed. I got in 4 miles and it felt really good.
I had to prep some samples at the VA and then bring them over to Stanford to run on their mass spec since ours hasn't been ordered yet. The machine was still going when I left. We set it to stop after it finished running all of the samples. I'll find out the results tomorrow.
On the way to work, I had to swerve on the freeway to avoid hitting an opposum. Not really want you want to do at high speed when your back has been unhappy. It's been a little sore on and off since. Hopefully it won't extend the healing process to much. I'm just having a run of bad back luck. I'm actually trying to decide if I will elliptical tomorrow or take a rest day. I guess I will see how it feels in the morning.
I do want it to heal quickly. I've already promised HALFFAST that I would do the Las Vegas Rock n Roll Half Marathon with her in December. Even my husband agreed to do it. It would be helpful if I were actually up and running by then.
Would you like to see a picture of dinner? It's Trader Joe's Chicken Tikka Masala, Trader Joe's Dal Makhani, Trader Joe's Naan and Sukhi's Chicken Saag (the green stuff).

YUM!!!!
Have a great night!!

I hate driving. I'm glad we have excellent public transportation here. I hope your back has recovered.
I have to kill 2 birds with 1 chocolate and check out Adora, that is a great idea. I had a Twix last night. I haven't had anything like that in so long, all I could taste was the sugar. I may as well have stuck my tongue in a bag. Ick!

Wish we had Trader Joe's and Whole Foods up here. Their stuff sounds (and looks) delicious. I made a pasta dish with mushrooms, onions, garlic tomatoes and spinach with feta on top. Pretty yummy for something out of my head. I did add lots of spices too.

Maybe you should consider a few days off exercising completely to let your back heal. I have had to do that and it helps. My back still acts up often, but exercises such as Supermans and lots of stretching keep it to a dull roar.

Tuesday...The Doctor Replies

Tuesday, April 12, 2011

I did as I said I would and did not do my ChaLEAN this morning. I did get a reply from the doctor:
"Its ok to continue running and weights as long it is not making the pain worse .
If he pain gets worse you might have to take a break from running and weights for 2-3 weeks.
Dr.Joshi"
Since I'm not sure if my back was more sore yesterday because of the ChaLEAN and the running or from the tripping incident, I also consulted with my personal physician (a fellow who is doing a research year in our lab). She advised me to not do any running or weights until I wasn't feeling anything in my back. She thinks that my trip over the weight on Saturday may have tweaked it a little and it needs a rest. She did say that that elliptical was fine to do.
Based on these opinions, I will call today a rest day and be doing elliptical for the rest of the week. The good news is my back is feeling very good today. A few mild twinges but certainly less than yesterday. I'm hoping to re-restart ChaLEAN this coming Sunday.
It was a hectic day at work that resulted in some peanut M&M eating...not a ton, I was just craving a few and had them.
We'll be having whole wheat spaghetti with turkey meatballs and our favorite Newman's Own pasta sauce. Always satisfying.
I'll be up bright and early tomorrow to do some elliptical. I guess I'll be blowing the Couch to 5K team April Consistency Challenge by not running but my back is worth it. There will always be May.
Have a great Wednesday!!

Ooof! I know it's frustrating to continually get blown out of the routine like that, but I have no doubt that in the end, you will stick to your path to better health, even if it does mean taking time off to take care of your back. emoticon emoticon I also know that you will see this only as a temporary setback, not a complete derailment.     seeing how I just came back from a back sprain, I would take it easy. If there is some exercise you can do, like she said, that's great. I know my chiro said no running a few days later I tried, in place, and it was a no go. When I could, I did. But it was like a week later.

Easy does it!

Don't be surprised if it takes a little longer to rest and recuperate the back. Some small but important muscles there. The eliptical is a good choice, as I had walking, swimming and yoga in my mind as I read the restrictions It can be hard to settle down the urge to progress, but healing can take an annoying (yet valuable) amount of time. I hope work settles down.

Monday 4/11/11

Monday, April 11, 2011

Yes, I got up and started week 5 of C25K. I felt fabulous during and after the run. However, later my back started being sore and it has been on and off all day. More like a stinging feeling. Not a lot but it's irritating. I can't figure out what is causing it. Sometimes it happens when I'm just sitting, sometimes when I get up. It's inconsistent. Maybe I restarted the ChaLEAN or the running too soon? I emailed my doctor and told her the whole story. Hopefully I'll hear back from her tomorrow. I'm not sure if I'm making it worse or not. I don't know if I'll do ChaLEAN tomorrow or not. I think I will wait until the afternoon to see if I hear back from my doctor.
Work was super busy. That's good because it kept me from snacking on M&M's.
I had a turkey burger for dinner and my husband had a turkey burger and a salmon burger. It was a clean out the freezer of burgers night tonight.
Not a bad day.
I'm hoping my back is happy tomorrow. I really just want to workout. Especially since I just posted my before pictures. I don't want to have to wait another month and do it again.
Sorry for a downer blog.

Sorry you are getting frustrated with not being able to work out like you want too. I completely understand. I know that a lot of my problems stem from the fact that I forget that I am 47 years old and while I can do anything, I have to get there more slowly than I used to. Yesterday morning I actually slept another 45 minutes instead of running. I was so tired from up often in the night with hot flashes. That, after I spent all day steam cleaning, moving furniture around, etc. This morning I am raring to get my strength training in and I will go for a long walk at lunch. We're having burgers tonight! Great minds think alike.

CLX Redo Day 1 Including Starting Pictures & Measurements, Also Some Muffins

Sunday, April 10, 2011

The back felt a tiny bit sore this morning but it felt like it was just from having been worked out.
I took my measurements and starting photos:
Measurements:
Bust: 31.25
Waist: 25
Hips: 34.5
Abductors: 36.75
Thigh: R= 20, L= 20
Upper Arm: R=11, L=11

You can tell these are new pictures because my hair is not as messy.
I did 40 minutes on the elliptical to warm up and then did the first ChaLEAN Extreme Workout (CLX from now on).
Burn Circuit 1

Sumo Squat with Hip Lift - W 7.5 R 12 (I'll try 10 next time)
Lunge with Posterior Fly - - W 5 R 12 (I'll try 7.5 next time)
Push Up with Leg Lift - 12 (on toes)
Dead Lift with Posterior Fly - - W 5 R 12 (I'll try 7.5 next time)
Lunge with Core Rotation - - W 7.5 R 12 (I'll try 10 next time)
Bench Press and Leg Lower - - W 7.5 R 12 (I did not do the leg lower)
Squat with Side Bend - - W 7.5 R 12 (I'll try 10 next time)
Forward Lean Lunge with DBL Arm Posterior Fly - - W 5 R 12 (6 each leg I'll try 7.5 next time)
Chest Fly with Hip Lift - - W 5 R 12 (I'll try 7.5 next time)
As you can see, I kept the weights light to make sure my back was okay with it. I will increase weights on Tuesday if I'm still feeling good tomorrow. So far, I'm feeling good.
After I got out of the shower, I was ravenous and had an Ezekial English muffin with some light string cheese and crushed red pepper...sort of like pizza. It hit the spot.
Then I baked some chocolate Vitamuffins and for fun added some unsweetened coconut. My husband will enjoy the mounds-like muffins for breakfast this week.

After the muffins came out of the oven, we headed over to the home and garden show going on at the nearby fairgrounds.
While we were there, I got an EMS (Electronic Muscle Stimulation) treatment on my lower back from one of the vendors. I figured why not, it's not going to hurt anything and maybe it will help. No, I did not buy the unit for $300 but I did take a pamphlet.
We didn't buy anything, but on the way out we saw the Monster Bus:

I don't know how much the rides were but we didn't take one.
We stopped at Jack in the Box and I got a chicken fajita pita.
We'll be taking DH's grandma out for dinner tonight. We'll have to see how she feels and what she wants.
Have a great rest of your Sunday and a great week!!!

Great job on the workout. I think it was good you took the weights light since you were having issues with your back. No need to aggravate the problem.

Where did you get your 12 lb weights? I have been looking around and every store has only 10 and 15 pounders.

You look awesome! So strong and healthy. I want a 25 inch waist! I will have it.
Sounds like you had a great weekend. The indian buffet and Panda Express looked delish.
Enjoy your evening!

You're doing great! Muffins look delish. The monster bus reminded me of last year's County Fair when I took the monster truck ride. I didn't stop laughing from start to finish. It was outrageously fun. This was an experience that cost didn't matter. When would I ever do this again? (smiling)

You are tiny!! I've been thinking about adding the CLX dvd's into my routine. Good luck with it. Muffins sound tasty!
