Sore Legs.....Awesome!!

I guess I shouldn't be scoffing at the 10 pound weights. Doing the squats and dead lifts with them certainly made my legs sore today. Feels great!!
I will do some elliptical this afternoon. That should help get some of the lactic acid out of there.
I have some music on while I'm looking at data at work. I also have to look up some journal articles to see how to measure some new chemicals we're interested in on the Mass Spec.
A nice Tuesday so far. My boss is in renal clinic so he won't be around to bother me for another couple of hours. Leaves me some time to get stuff done.
Tonight I'm planning on making some Trader Joe's falafel with hummus, pita, cucumber, and tomatoes. A nice vegetarian meal. I love any meal that has garbanzo beans and this one will have it in two dishes....fabulous!
I will take a picture of my plate tonight and post if for those of you who like to see falafel and hummus.

I'm hoping for some muscle soreness tomorrow to show I did something in today's new workout!! Did I just wish for muscle soreness? Sometimes the 'new' me just scares me! LOL

    I wish we had Trader Joe's in Canada! Everytime I see someone mention it I swoon - lol. Great job on the workout! 10 lb weights don't seem like much on their own but when you do a bunch of exercises with them they can certainly burn!

    I don't even know what Falafel is but I'm going to look it up! I am also going to take the plunge and get an elliptical. Do you recommend any particular brand? My treadmill is a Proform and I know they make ellipticals as well, but I'd like some opinions before I drop $600-700!

Starting a New Weight Lifting Program

Monday morning came way to quickly for me. I really did not want to get up, but I knew I had things to do at work so I did.
I had put exercise clothes out in case I got up early enough to do a little elliptical, but I didn't get up early enough.
Fed the cat, ate breakfast and went to work.
I put the samples that I didn't run last Friday on the HPLC and got some fiber packets packaged up for our study people.
My boss had been in Austria last week so this was his first day back. He even brought me some chocolate (German, not Austrian).
When I got home from work, I started on my new ST program. It's Exercise at Home from the Muscle & Fitness Hers website. It's a 12 week three part program. I'm starting with the beginner's workout. It covers all the major muscle groups. 1-2 sets (I did 2 sets of everything) and 10-12 reps (I did 12). I realize that I am going to need to be getting some heavier weights. For some of the exercises my 10's were almost not enough. I do have a pair of 15s. I don't know if I'll be able to make the jump from 10 to 15 directly. I guess I'll just have to give it a try.
You are supposed to do the beginner workout 2-3times/week for 4 weeks. Then move on to the Intermediate for 4 weeks and then to the Advanced.
It was fun to do something a little different. And nice to just listen to whatever music I want rather than what is playing in the exercise video.
It took about 30 minutes including a warm up and stretch. I decided to do 30 minutes of step aerobics to get a little cardio in for the day.
Not too bad for a Monday.

    Oh, I should be joining you in the strength training. I love that you have exercise equipment at home - I want that in our next house! So much nicer than walking down to the gym. But then again, my husband may never see me. haha Sounds like your study is going good too! Good start to Feb!

Another Rainy Sunday-Did Natalie Bake? Why, Of Course She Did.

Firstly, my husband would like to thank everyone for their congratulations! You guys are so sweet.
It actually started raining last night and continued through most of today, on and off. It made for a nice sleep.
I decided that I would get a little elliptical in this morning and did 6 miles in 70 minutes. Good workout.
I had a little oatmeal for breakfast. Always nice on a cold (well, cold for me anyway), rainy morning.
I then baked some turtle bars. These my husband will take to his friend's house on Tuesday night. They are kind of labor intensive so I thought I'd rather do it today when I had time rather than on Monday.
Very tasty, too:

We were craving burgers, so I called my brother. Why? Because his favorite food is hamburgers. We wanted to try a place we had never been to and it is sort of close to my brother's place so I thought I might as well invite him.
My brother got a bacon cheddar beef burger, my husband got a bacon avocado turkey burger and I got a gardenburger. I ordered last and thought about adding bacon to it to see if the guy at the counter would notice but I really wasn't in the mood for meat at all so I didn't. We shared some onion rings and fries. This place lets you put your toppings on yourself. They don't have the biggest topping bar I've seen but they had the basics: lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, relish, jalpenos, salsa, mustard, ketchup, mayo, Tabasco.
I made mine with salsa, jalapenos and Tabasco. Spicy...yum!!!
For dinner tonight it is some leftovers. We have some mexican pizza in the freezer that my husband will be finishing off along with some leftover carnitas and a little rice. I'm just going to make a tuna sandwich. Craving it for some reason.

Saturday 5K

I got up and decided I need to do some cardio since I wasn't going to be running the 5K today. Put in some miles on the elliptical and felt great. After my shower, it was time to wake my husband. We both had a little breakfast and headed over to RoadRunner Sports where the 5K was happening.
After a small group had shown up, they led us to the race start (and end). The were using a running/walking/biking trail nearby. No real place for any spectators. Everybody got ready and when all the participants were there, they started. I went over to Starbucks to get a cup of coffee. I wasn't expecting anyone to be back for at least 20 minutes. The winner came in at about 22 minutes. I thought that was really fast. More people passed the finish. Then came my husband and another one of the participants. They crossed at 34:10 (husband) and 34:11 (other guy). Still more people crossed the finish.
I thought he did a great job on his first 5K. He said he did walk some of the way. He has only recently done any running (not using any training program) and it has all been on our treadmill. This is the first time he has run outside since High School.
Everybody went back to the store and got water, Larabars, bagels, fruit. I didn't see the guy who won, but the lady who came in second was allowed to pick out an outfit she liked for free. Nice winnings.
After my husband had a little post-race treat, we headed home so he could take a shower and warm up. It was kind of chilly this morning and he was wearing shorts.
We did some grocery shopping. Glad that's out of the way. Then I treated him to dim sum. Pretty good. I had a ton of chinese broccoli, a steamed pork bun , a pork shu mai (that I had to pick pieces of shrimp out of) and a sesame ball with red bean paste inside. Everything else had shrimp. My husband had a lot because he loves shrimp.
Since it was Chinese food, I'm hungry again. But my husband is sleeping on the couch. Hoping for some dinner soon.

Friday Fog

I had to force myself to get up out of the snuggly bed this morning. But once I was up, it was okay. Fed the cat (and the outside strays), fed myself and then off to work.
It was a very foggy drive. And there was an accident being cleared just a couple of exits from where I entered the freeway. Luckily there isn't much traffic at 5am, so it wasn't a very big slow down. When I got to work, I noticed that all the samples I planned to run on the HPLC did not run overnight. My bad. I gave the machine the wrong instructions and it just stopped. Oh well. It happens. I was going to run them today, but then I remembered that they were having a planned power shutdown on Saturday morning. Now it would have only taken about 14 or so hours to run the samples but that would have made it 10pm by the time the machine was done. I did not want to have to come back to work at 10pm to shutdown the machine and it's computer. I'll just run them on Monday instead.
Since I had a little time at work, I was able to do a little dancing in my office. Always nice to get a little extra cardio into the day.
When I got home, I decided to give disc 2 of the Kathy Smith Lift Weights to Los Weight a go. Not bad. Didn't seem quite as intense as the first disc, but did have a lot of balance stuff. A nice workout.
I just got out of the shower and I'm waiting for my husband to get home so we can go to dinner. Don't know where yet. I'm sure he'll want to get to bed earlyish because he's running his first 5K tomorrow. It would have been mine as well, but you all know about my knees. I'll be there to cheer him on. No, he actually hasn't been training. He ran on Thursday of this week and I think maybe he ran a couple of weeks ago. All on the treadmill. I guess we'll see how he does outside.

    Extra Cardio is always good! I did some extra cardio at work today too. I walked almost 3 miles. No dancing for me at work I sit right by the glass hallway window where everyone can see in. How funny would that be to have people in the hall stop, stare, and then fall on the floor laughing? Hope dinner was great! Enjoy the rest of the night. I have chores to finish!
