Doctor's Appointment

I did not do any elliptical today. I was tired and slept in. When I got up my joints were feeling pretty good but by the time I got to work, my knees and elbows were pretty unhappy.
I was done for the day trying to wrangle up people for our study at work, so I headed over to Kaiser for my appointment. I got there about an hour early. That's okay, on a few occasions I've even been seen early. That was not the case today. My appointment was supposed to be at 3:10 but I didn't get called back to see the doctor until after 4:00. She asked lots of questions, she looked at my knees, she listened to my heart and lungs. This was a yearly checkup originally. She said that along with the regular blood tests, she would check for arthritis and also check my vitamin D level. That's good because I was going to ask her if I could have my vitamin D level checked because I wear sunscreen every day and it's usually SPF 100. She doesn't think that I have rheumatoid arthritis, but I could have osteoarthritis. I could also be vitamin D deficient which can cause joint issues. She did send me to get x-rays of my knees since those are the worst joints. We'll see what they turn up and what happens with the blood tests. I won't be doing those until Saturday because I need to be fasting and their lab opens too late (6:30am) during the week for me to go before work. I should have some sort of idea of what's going on by early next week.
She did say no running or jumping (so no jumping jacks or jump rope...sorry, Jillian), until she at least sees the x-rays. Elliptical is okay.
So the answer is, we don't know yet.
If I don't stay up too late tonight, I'll try getting up in the morning to exercise. It's already getting late so I guess I should wind this down and get to bed soon.

    Good luck with your results. The waiting game is the hardest when you just want to know what is wrong! For my blood work, my doc also had them check my Vit D levels and I'll be finding out the results on Monday. Jillian will be very upset that you can't do jumping jacks and jump rope but hopefully she'll get over it! ;)

    Happy that you went to the Dr. and sorry you had to wait so long, I usually schedule my appts first thing in the morning or right after lunch if possible. I hate waiting in the waiting rooms. I hope you find out soon! My Vitamin D was low this summer, too hot to soak up the rays here in Sac in the afternoon. But I started taking the Costco brand multivitamin and my levels went back to normal. Hope you are feeling good today!

    Hi Nat! The results of the blood tests should be interesting. Do you know is they did a blood test called "RF" (rheumatoid factor)? The result of that gives an idea of the chances of rheumatoid arthritis. Have a super duper day!

    I would bet you are vitamin d deficient -- most of us are. But you'll know soon enough, and then hopefully you can do something about it & feel better.

    Hey Nat! glad you finally got in and have the tests lined up. bummer that you have to wait on the labs. a bit odd, huh, since you work in one.
i was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 13 years ago, but i found out that the more i let the pain be the boss of me, the more pain i was in. now i just ignore it for the most part. so hopefully once you find out what the cause of your pain is, you will be able to be the boss of it!!

It's Tuesday!!

I got to bed pretty late last night and my knees were a little sore so I didn't get up to exercise in the morning. I figured I'd do it this afternoon.
Work wasn't too busy but kept me occupied.
My ankles started to really hurt and then my knees decided to join them. Then my elbows and hands thought they might as well hurt, too. By the time I got home from work it was pretty much just the knees but I can still feel it a little in my fingers. Arthritis? I don't know. I guess it's a good thing I'm seeing the doctor tomorrow afternoon. The nephrologists I work with aren't very useful if you have a problem that doesn't involve your kidneys.
I haven't felt like this since last Thursday. If the pattern is the same, I should feel pretty damn good tomorrow. Maybe I can get a workout in when I get up because I won't be able to do it in the afternoon. I'll see how the joints are doing at 2:30.
We had baked salmon, asparagus and Alexia chipotle roasted sweet potatoes & vegetables for dinner:

I was still low on calories and wanted a little chocolate so I had a couple of squares for Dagoba Organic Xocolatl....74% dark chocolate with nibs and tasty!!

Dinner sounds yummy! And chocolate too. I contemplated chocolate last night . . . I always have my Adora calcium supplement, but sometimes I supplement the supplement. Decided against it in the end.

    Hope you are feeling better and that the docs can figure out what's causing the joint pain. Your joints should never hurt from working out. Muscle soreness is ok and expected, but joint soreness is usually something else.

Super Busy Monday! (Baked Good Picture Alert)

It may have been a day off of work, but boy I've been rushing around pretty much non stop.
I decided to try doing some elliptical today and see how the knees liked it. No problems while on the machine and just that little tight feeling when I was in the shower. Otherwise, nothing. I also did some upper body..Kathy Smith Lift Weights to Lose Weight. I had never done that DVD. Not bad. I'll have to try the lower body next.
Then it was time to meet my BFF for lunch. I got a grilled chicken sandwich and saved half for lunch tomorrow. I did get fries but between the two of us we only ate half so it wasn't too bad.
When I came home, it was time to bake some cookies. I made some orange drop cookies. Super Yummy!!!! The recipe came from my sparkfriend, Marchem.

We had Chef Meg's Slow Cooker Pork with Greens and Beans. Pretty tasty!
I also baked some whole wheat oatmeal muffins with pecans, raisins and dates.

Now it's almost time for bed. Better get off the computer and wash the dishes.

I *almost* made a cherry pie yesterday. I was in such a weird funk in the afternoon though...felt tired and cranky and shouldn't have, did an easy run. Kinda tight in the shoulders and tired now...I think I must be coming down w/ something emoticonoh no!

Cupcake Pictures and a Hot Flash

I did not elliptical today even though my knees were feeling pretty good. I may do a little walking with Leslie later and I found an upper body aerobics video on youtube I might try out to see if it will get my heart rate up at all. Lots of punches and arm flapping but looks like fun.
My brother came by and we went out for breakfast. I was pretty good: egg white omelet with broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms and cheddar cheese. A little cheese inside but most of it was on top. I took a lot of it off and actually the omelet was so huge, I brought half home. They must have used 6 eggs whites at least. This place makes 4 egg omelets normally but it looked like more than 4 whites were needed for this one. I did have an English muffin and some of the home fries.
We came back to our place and played some pinball on the PS3 and downloaded Angry Birds. My brother is now addicted and will probably get it for himself when he gets home.
While playing pinball, I had my second ever hot flash. I wasn't sure if that was possible since I'm on the pill and it wasn't an off week but there it was. Weird.
We tried out the cupcakes. They were pretty good. The next time I test it, I will increase the red food color because they weren't red enough. Also need to decrease the cocoa powder and add some vinegar because they weren't quite right. are the pictures

    Went through menopause in 2006 but no hot flashes whatsoever I was 46. Hope you fair as well as I did.

    I have thought I have had hot flashes too, but not 100% sure. My mother started in her mid 50's and I'm 45. I also wonder though if childless you have it sooner? After all, for every kid you have, you saved 8-9 eggs by not having a period right? Just a thought.

    Hotflashes started them at 32 after a full hysterectomies. Now at 43 I'm apparently going through menopause so guess what? Yup hotflashes even worse now. Cupcakes look oh so good.

    mm yum! I never got how they make red velvet, I tried to make a red cake for my niece once, an entire bottle of food colouring later it was still pink and completely inedible poor kid...

    Red velvet. Sigh. One of my favorites.

I've never had a hot flash (yet, anyway). In fact, was just talking to my mom & she said she never had one either. Of course, she also didn't go thru menopause til she was 56 and can I say just shoot me now?

Altho my sister, who is 56, is done -- don't know if she had hot flashes or not.

    Yummy Cupcakes Nat! Bummer on the hot flashes. i have been going through them for a couple of years now. dressing in layers and good air-conditioning are a must. also i own a lot of paper fans and keep them everywhere, so that i always have one on hand.
also, i take Estroven. it helps a lot. it doesn't completely rid me of them, but they are reduced. also, stress can bring them on.

Sunny Saturday

I made sure to take a shower very soon after I got up this morning so I wouldn't be tempted to do any exercise.
We did go to Whole Foods and get some groceries. I did do some swiffer vac'ing. And I've got a load of laundry in the dryer right now.
My husband was craving sushi, so we went to Tatami for lunch. It's a sushi buffet but they also have hot food. Lucky for me because I don't like sushi. The only raw fish I'll eat is lox. I was good and had mostly steamed veggies, a little teriyaki chicken, a little fried rice, some steamed whitefish, one piece of tempura broccoli, one nugget of orange chicken and some melon. We went walking around the mall for over an hour after, so I did get some exercise and worked off a little of the fried stuff.
I ended up emailing my doctor to give her a heads up about my knee issues. Obviously she can't diagnose from an email but she might have enough information to put in a referral so I can see a specialist sooner. We shall see.
It was nice and sunny today. Still cool outside but toasty in the car.
I will be baking some gluten free red velvet cupcakes tonight. I'll get a picture tomorrow when they've been frosted.

    Sounds like a great weekend. I am also happy that you have contacted the doctor. I don't think your knees should be sore this long. I do hope that everything with the doctor comes out good. Red velvet cupcakes are my worst enemy and one of my favorites. My hubby and I would go to Cupcake Craving just for those. Oh so good. I don't like sushi either. No raw anything here, except for veggies.

    Sounds like a Great day Nat! funny you made the red velvet cupcakes. i was just telling my niece today that i would make my Mom a red velvet cake for her birthday on the 25th.
glad you are getting things lined up for the doc. that helps, i am sure. wish we could email our doc!

    YUM! red velvet cupcakes, that sounds really good. It is probably best to see the doc about your knee issues, good that you are getting it looked at. Lunch sounds good!
