Yay...It's Friday!!!

Friday, January 14, 2011

My knees have been remarkably cooperative today so I will not be complaining. They were a little sore first thing but then great most of they. Now a little sore again but nothing like yesterday. I don't know what was up with that.
Today we were collecting samples for a new study. We often use ourselves as "normal" test subjects. The only thing normal about is that we still have kidney function. This morning I had to go into work fasting. Not even coffee. We needing fasting blood and a urine sample. I only had to get stuck twice but was only able to get 4 tubes of blood. My veins were just not happy this morning. Probably too cold in the hospital. After I got my blood spinning down and collected my urine, I was able to have some breakfast and coffee....felt a million times better (except for my arm which has a giant bruise forming).
I spent the rest of the day going up and down the stairs between the 4th floor where our big lab is and the 2nd floor where my office is. Can't drink or eat in the lab. I don't know if it's true of all hospitals but this one has floors that are double high...there are 4 flights of stairs between the floors rather than the usual 2. I am way to impatient to wait for the elevators. So lots and lots of stairs today. When my knees started feeling sore, I started taking the elevator...I'm not that crazy. I'll just count all the stairs as walking 3mph and log some fitness minutes. It's certainly more walking around than I do on a non-sample prep day and this one had many more steps than usual.
I am very happy it is Friday. It's a long weekend for me and my husband is coming home from a work trip this evening. I'm looking forward to a nice weekend. No elliptical until at least Sunday (depending on how the knees are feeling).
Have a great weekend everybody!

You are a brave woman. Ouch! Don't they have lab rats for that kind of testing?! And the stairs just might have done a number on your knees (especially if the pain is right below the knee cap). The power of Motrin. Or nothing a lap full or warm kitty cat can't cure. emoticon

Nat, my Mom was a lab tech and used me as the guinea pig. i couldn't say how many times a month we had to pee in a cup for her give blood, throat swabs, etc. i was 17 before i had someone besides my Mom collect a sample from me! i'd say she was checking us for drugs, but they didn't have all that technology back then.
my pencil holder is an old copper test tube holder with pot! it was Moms.

Have a GREAT long weekend!

Cranky Knees

Thursday, January 13, 2011

Warning: This is just me complaining. If you don't want to read this, that's okay.
When I got up this morning both of my knees felt fine. No tightness even. Just fabulous. No problems going downstairs to make breakfast. Great driving into work. Great walking into the hospital and up the stairs. Great until about 8am when they started to feel sore. Mostly the left one. That is the worst one. It's been on and off since. Usually sore when I'm sitting rather than doing something. Makes no sense.
I will be seeing my doctor next Wednesday (as some of you already know) so I'll ask about it then.
Oddly on my drive home not only were my knees sore but so were my elbows and my hands. Arthritis? Flu coming on? I don't know. When I got home, nothing was sore.
I thought I'd just do something gentle so I did some yoga and some pilates. The knees were pretty sore afterward but then okay when I got into the shower.
I'm in the process of icing them now. I guess it can't hurt. I'll take an ibuprofen before bed and hope for the best.
Tomorrow: no pilates or yoga or anything
At least it's Thursday. I can't wait for Friday and a long weekend.

I liked the warning. I don't know what the problem might be, but it sounds like you are doing everything to take care of it. I have aches and pains that come and go, but there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with me. You have already been to the doctor and I hope everything was OK.

Sort of like a Day Off...But Not Really

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

I got to stay home today because I just had some reading to do. I ended up having to go to Starbucks so I could really focus on the book. I do have to go into work tomorrow but that's okay.
I decided to give my poor knee a rest today because it's been sore. Actually more sore today than it has been in weeks. I don't know what's up with it. I did Jackie Warner Power Circuit Training Abs and Upper Body circuits. I'm not sure what I'll do tomorrow. I guess I'll see how the knee feels. I will exercise in the afternoon to give it as much rest as possible, if I do exercise.
I did make an egg white omelet with asparagus for breakfast. I don't usually have time during the week for something like that so it was nice for a change. Usually it's a whole grain english muffin with peanut butter (or almond butter). I had leftover tuna mac and cheese with some broccoli for lunch. I am feeling very cheesy today, so it'll be Amy's cheese enchiladas for dinner. Also got to make up some calories or I'll be way too low for the day.
It did feel almost like a day off, but having to do the reading definitely made it seem like work. I think I'd rather be at work for work.
Have a great Wednesday night all!!

Tuesday 1/11/11

Tuesday, January 11, 2011

Since I was up late last night, I decided in advance that I was going to sleep in and workout in the afternoon. It felt really good. I'm not good on less than 5 hours sleep, so I'm glad I didn't try to make myself crazy and get up.
Work wasn't too busy. We're sort of between studies. My boss is teaching this week and working on grants next week. The fellow that I work with is covering in-patient at the hospital, so she's not around for recruiting people. I have been reading a book on mass spectroscopy because we're going to be getting a detector soon and I need to know how to use it. My boss and I decided that it wasn't really necessary for me to be over that the VA just to read so I'll probably be home for the rest of the week and doing the reading here. If it becomes too much of a problem, I'll head over to Starbucks to read.
I did come home and workout. Put in 4 miles on the elliptical today. My knee was a little sore earlier today but felt good after the elliptical. Now, it's a little sore again sometimes. I'm thinking I will do only upper body weights tomorrow and give my knee a break from squats and lunges. See if that helps.
My husband wasn't home for dinner, so I made some whole wheat macaroni and cheese with tuna. Yes, I used a box. I don't like the real stuff. It was Annie's organic. I like it.
That's all for today.
Have a great night!!

Sounds like a pretty easy day. I had the same kind of day, but had to fill for one of the ladies that is still out sick. Not too hard, just sending a few applications to hiring managers for processing. It was my job before I became a specialist so no big deal. Then I spent the rest of the afternoon just looking up things on the internet and scheduling some appts for the kids pretty smooth.

Not Bad for a Monday

Monday, January 10, 2011

I was a very good girl today. I got up 2:30 just as I had planned and after doing all the little morning tasks, I worked out with Jillian (NMTZ). Perhaps I shouldn't have done the jumping jacks, jump rope and skater in the warm up. My pesky left knee has had a tiny on and off twinge to it since. Not while I was working out, not in the shower after (it just felt a little tight) but just sort of randomly today. It may be nothing since it isn't in the same location all the time. Maybe it's psychosomatic.
I did need to get my workout in this morning because I'm meeting my BFF for dinner tonight. No time in the afternoon for exercise. She's trying to be gluten free so we're heading over to Chevy's. I think I'll get the chicken fajitas. They're not too evil. I don't like sour cream or guacamole and I never put cheese on so they should be relatively healthy. It's also a big portion so I probably won't eat more than half.
In anticipation, I had an Amy's light and lean spinach lasagna for lunch. Only 250 calories and very tasty. And it's organic. A side of broccoli and it's a great lunch. I hope it'll last me until dinner.
Have a great day everyone!!
