I Didn't Bake Anything Today!

Monday, December 20, 2010

It was a nice first day of vacation. I got up around 4:30 because the cat was walking on my face. I decided to workout after my husband left for work so I had breakfast first. It was kind of weird waiting. Anyway, since it's Monday I did some strength training. I ended up doing Bob Harper's Body Rev Cardio Conditioning workout 2 (25 minutes of mostly balance and lower body work) then I did Pure Burn Super Strength workout 1 (66 minutes of circuit training) then I figured I'd hop on the incline trainer and did one of the Jillian Michaels ifit workouts. After all that, it was definitely time for a shower and lunch.
I was craving some of the chocolate covered fruit that we got for a Chanukah present so I had a few pieces. Then felt a little yucky. I guess even though my mind wanted some, my tummy didn't. I thought maybe if I danced around the living room listening to my iPod it might help...it did :-)
Tonight I'm going to roast some garbanzo beans to have as a side dish along with Trader Joe's Andouille chicken sausage and some spinach. It should be tasty.
I hope everybody had a great Monday!

How About Some Pumpkin Bread

Sunday, December 19, 2010

Since it is Sunday, I did some yoga. I know I was going to do yoga on Saturdays but since my running days got changed, so did yoga. I tried out Bob Harper's Yoga for the Warrior. I did both of the workouts for a total of 75 minutes...that's a lot of yoga. Some of those moves were super hard but at least they showed modifications. I'd definitely do it again.
I did some laundry and grocery shopping. Then I made some pumpkin bread for my husband to take for breakfast. I put in some pecans, raisins and cranberries...yum!

The batter was good and it smelled wonderful in the house. It made me happy as I Swiffervac'd the floors. It's cooling now and then I'll slice it up.
It's been very grey today. Raining on and off. Raining again right now. Very soothing.
I hope everyone had a good Sunday.

Quite a Busy Saturday

Saturday, December 18, 2010

I didn't get to bed until almost midnight and was up at 4:30 because I'm crazy, I guess.
I decided to do my GW28K W2D2 run with my neutral running shoes to see if the extra cushioning would help my knees feel a little better since they've been feeling a little sore at the end of the day. By the last running interval, I started to feel a little something on the outside of my left knee (that's the side that has the wonky ankle) but it was not really sore..more like pressure. Today, I actually put an ice pack on my knees for about 5 minutes each (it was all I could stand of the cold) before I took a shower. They've been feeling pretty damn good all day. I don't know if it was the shoes or the icing or if they are finally just feeling better. As a scientist, I know I should only have changed one variable but oh well. Now that I'm on vacation, I have time to ice my knees before I hit the shower since I don't have to run off to work.
We went to meet a friend for brunch today. We went to a place called the Depot Cafe. It is actually located at a train depot. I had the house made corned beef hash with egg whites and fruit. Very tasty and not too salty.
Afterward we went to Sears to check out their ellipticals. I thought it would be good to have something to cross train with. After trying out all of them, I settled on the Sole E35. Very sturdy, very smooth and the pedals were the correct distance apart (on some of the models they are too far apart and it feels awkward). It has set me back about $1500 but that's worth it for a way to get a good cardio workout without aggravating my knees (now that they're feeling better of course). It's going to arrive 12/23. It's a good thing I'm on vacation ;-)
We had dinner with my brother at a Mexican place. They had some very good chile verde. The sauce was very light, the beans had a faint taste of coffee (?) but were very good.
It was a good day.
I hope everybody had a great Saturday.

Sounds like you had a good Saturday! Shopping and brunch, then dinner out. Hope the elliptical works out for you and it is good for the knees. We purchased one from Sam's Club about 3 years again, but the rollers would not stay on all the way and was a safety issue for anyone that used it, so we returned and I joined the gym instead. It is a great workout. If we every give up the gym membership I might invest in one again, but I would have to do my homework on them first.

i just tried out an elliptical yesterday. it was interesting, but not something that i could see myself enjoying. though the few minutes i was on it, i could tell it would be a great work out! i might have to try them out again! it was either running without the impact or riding a bike with out a seat!
i expect a full report once you have had yours for a month!! Enjoy!

Didn't do much at all here.

I paid a fair amount for my treadmill, but that was almost 10 years ago now and I've gotten many miles out of it . . . and hope to get many more! I'm sure you're going to love your elliptical, and I really do think cross training is a good idea.

The cookies, btw, are from Liz Lovely -- next time you're at Whole Foods you could look. Actually, Whole Foods bakery is awfully good, too. Even my local co-op actually carries them, and they have a somewhat limited collection of anything. They're VERY good, and I'm very picky, too.

Enjoy your new toy. :) Sounds like you had an enjoyable, relaxing day.
The elliptical is a great workout, (remember not to straighten your knees all the way) and squatting a little, keeping feet flat throughout the whole movement really targets the whole behind.

I am sitting here at work and want to cross my legs every few minutes and keep stopping myself. It's so hard, but I am trying...

I'm laughing... "as a scientist, I should know to change just one variable".. Funny. In my new office, it was Secret Santa week and one of the guys got a gift of a framed saying "I love a good audit"! Too funny.
I love corned beef hash and allow myself some every 1-2 years! I'll take you to a place here when you come.. YUM
Elliptical at Sears. Does the console run on batteries? If so, try this converter. I wish I had found it sooner.

Last Work Friday of the Year

Friday, December 17, 2010

I decided to let Jackie Warner work me out this morning...for a change I did the Power Circuit Training. Not nearly as sweat inducing as the Xtreme Timesaver but it is a good workout. I'll probably be sore tomorrow morning.
It was a busy day at work. Lots of data to look at. Lots of cookies to distribute. A dietitian friend of mine gave me some biscotti. I never make them so it's a nice treat. I had to make sure I backed up all 4 of the lab computers and shut them down because they're doing a power shutdown tomorrow at the VA. My boss came in and wanted to have a meeting at noon...why we always have to have meetings that interfere with lunch I'll never know. I'm taking the rest of the year off so I won't have to worry about meetings until 2011.
On the way home I had to stop at the post office and pick up a package. It was actually for my husband but he doesn't get home early enough to get to the post office and we won't be around tomorrow. Lots of people were waiting for packages. This post office isn't a regular one. It doesn't have any services other than package pickup because it's the mail sorting center for the area.
Tonight we're going to the Silicon Valley Scale Modelers Christmas Meeting and gift grab. It's at a Round Table Pizza, so guess what's on the menu for dinner tonight. That's okay, I haven't had pizza for a while. I'm bringing some of the chocolate andes mint cookies to pass around and I think I'll stop for some coffee before we get there because I want a hot beverage and they don't have any...I don't want any cold soda.
It should be a fun night .
Happy Friday everybody!

The Last of the Baking for this Week

Thursday, December 16, 2010

I did another run in my new shoes this morning. GW28k week 2 day 1 (run 8, walk 1 x4). My cranky ankle was bothering me a little and I felt like I had a little shin splints thing going on the other leg. However, my knees felt fine and have been pretty good for the rest of the day. Sometimes I sit funny and tweak my knee and ankle joints and then they are a little sore. I need to learn to sit with my feet planted in front of me...I think that would help the joints heal a lot sooner.
It was a very busy day at work. I had lots of data to look at from overnight. I had to bring the chemical waste down to the loading dock at 9:45 but had to get meeting about a half hour away at 11. Luckily, the people that collect the waste came pretty quickly because I still had to prepare some papers for the meeting. My coworker and I stopped at Taco Bell for lunch...I had a fresco style steak burrito supreme. Definitely good calorie-wise, but high (as everything at Taco Bell) on the salt.
When I got home today, I baked the last of the cookies for this week. Some Chewy Molasses Crinkles (a Martha Stewart recipe...she's not my favorite person, but she sure has good baking recipes).
You've seen them before (this is an old picture because I forgot to get a new one today):

I cut up half the brownies that I made last night and packed them in a gift box. I boxed up all the cookies I'm bringing to work tomorrow for my coworkers.
As much as I love to bake, it'll be nice to have a few baking-free days.
Happy Thursday!!!

It's interesting you mention how you sit. I sit with my legs crossed almost all day and then I read that it can contribute to the exact hamstring issues I am having. Sitting pretty feet planted all day is difficult. I challenge you, we can be sitting buddies!
