Long Day

I got up and decided I'd try out the Gateway to 8K running program because it increases the running intervals very slowly and I think that's what my knees need. The first week is run 7 minutes, walk 1 minute x4. Today when I got off the treadmill my knees felt pretty good. I think they're still a tiny bit sore from Tuesdays 51 minutes of running but they are much better. I think I just need to build up more slowly than the B210K program and that's okay. I know my knees have had issues in the past...all through junior high I was in corrective p.e. because of them.
It was a long day at work. I left 1.5 hours later than I normally do and the traffic was not so great. Then I had to stop at the post office to pick up a package that needed a signature. I hate that. Finally home and ready to have a little dinner.
My husband brought home some homemade tamales from work yesterday. His coworker is a fabulous cook, so this is going to be a great dinner. He brought home 3 of them....I don't think I should eat that many...they're pretty evil. I'll try to keep it to 2 of them.
I'm glad tomorrow is Friday. I need weekend.

    Hope you got to relax a little when you got home and hope this weekend you definitely can have some relaxation time! Luckily you just have one more day and then BAM weekend is here and its all yours!

    Weekend needed here, too! Actually, today should be fairly restful for me. TOM arrived, and am looking forward to a little couch time. And a little movement, of course.

I always make up my own running plans. I read others, than do what feels right for me. Too easy to injure yourself just blindly following someone else's plan.

    yummy! i love tamales. if they are green. cant eat the red ones. tonight i made some not so christmassy cookies for my mail ladys and the folks who watch our farm when we go away. got the recipe from you favorite baking store the other day. Magic in the middles. pretty yummy stuff! no pictures though.
hope your knees get a good rest. maybe you need to take a few days off of the treadmill?

    how are your shoes? I have significant knee problems unless I am wearing the shoes that the running shoe place "fit" to my feet. Hope your knees are okay!

Taking a Rest Day

The concert last night was excellent. One of the best shows I've seen in a long time. I'm glad I got a chance to see The Wall live. My Mom wouldn't let me go in 1980 when Roger Waters originally toured with Pink Floyd. Then when he performed it at the Berlin Wall in 1990, I couldn't afford to go. I had just started a new job anyway. Luckily, people weren't really standing up until the very end so I was able to see most of the show (for a change). I got way too much side stream pot smoke, though. The people sitting next to us must have had 5 or 6 joints each. They even offered to share with us, but we declined. I had a nasty headache at the end of the show.
We did stay up pretty late. I didn't get to bed until almost midnight so there was absolutely no way I was going to work out in the morning. I was thinking of doing the Bob Harper Pure Burn Super Strength 60 minute workout this afternoon. Then I decided it would probably be best that I don't. I only had about 4 hours sleep last night so I'm pretty beat and I thought it might be a good idea to rest my knees. There are a lot of lunges and squats in the work out and they are kind of hard on the knees. After having gone up and down the stairs a half dozen times at work , my knees are a tiny bit sore. If I'm going to try running in the morning, I think it best to rest today.
Work was very busy. Lots of samples to work on.
Tonight I'm baking some salmon and I will make some latkes for the last night of Chanukah. They will be low fat because I'll put them on the griddler and use olive oil spray. I think I'll also make some asparagus. Should be tasty.
It's weird not to be working out today, I must say. It must mean I don't take enough rest days.
Have a great Wednesday night! We're more than half way through the week. I am super happy about that.

    Glad you had a good time. I would have def. been put off by the pot smoke though.
Rest up those knees. You obviously workout alot!
Would you believe I have never had/tried Salmon or asparagus? Maybe I am weird though.

    glad you got to see most of the concert. even though i am tall, i usually get stuck behind some big hairdo or a 7' tall guy. i don't think i could have taken the smoking though. my asthma would have gone in to over drive.

    We got in around midnight, and I slept to almost 6 am -- still not enough sleep for me! Did walk with Leslie again. And spent some time at the mall, since I had to get DH his traditional Hannukah present -- an Ansel Adams calendar. I've been getting him one every year since we got married, & just didn't have time before we left -- did mean I didn't get a whole lot of rest today between grocery shopping & picking up the dogs and a few other errands.

B210K W3D1 and Sore Knees

I got up this morning and my knees were feeling pretty good...just a little stiff going down the stairs to feed the cat. I filled up my 1L water bottle and turned on the treadmill. I did my W3D1 run/walk- run 17 minutes, walk 1, run 17, walk 1, run 17. It felt great until the last 3ish minutes. Then my left knee started to feel not exactly sore but something. I finished it out. When I got off the treadmill both my knees felt a little sore. I did my stretching and took a shower...probably should have iced my knees first but I was in a hurry. I did take an ibuprofen before I left for work. My left knee is still a tiny bit sore but not bad. I'm thinking that my knees need to ramp up to this amount of running (51 minutes) a little slower than the B210K program does it. I will see how they're feeling on Thursday and maybe just do the first week again (run 10, walk 1 x4) and see how that goes.
Perhaps I should have done a whole month of 30 minute runs before embarking on the B210K. I just went directly from finishing the C25K to the B210K. That may not have been the wisest thing to do.
Enough about my knees.
Today should be a pretty good one. It doesn't seem like it will be very busy at work (since I have time to blog now). We are going to a concert tonight... Roger Waters performing The Wall. Since my Mom wouldn't let me go to see Pink Floyd in 1980, I finally have a chance to see the show. I'm looking forward to it. I just hope the audience isn't standing the whole time because I would like to see some of it (at least the beginning and end when the wall isn't in front of the musicians). My brother is coming along and we'll all be going out for dinner first...a concert tradition.

    Enjoy the concert!

You may also want to just run at a slower pace. Remember, when you increase time or distance, you should decrease pace. Well, I'm sure you'll figure out what's right for you.

    Hey Nat! sounds like you are going to have fun regardless of what your knees think about it! i am sure that it is okay to go back to a point that you feel comfy with on B210k. it's your program, use it the way that it will work for YOU!

    Hi there! Yep, maybe you might find running a bit less for a bit and gradually work into it. I'm sure your body will tell 'ya - ouch this hurts! Enjoy the concert. Wish I was there, I love Pink Floyd.

I think you are right, maybe gradually working your body up to getting used to running for 51 minutes will help your knees get used to that amount of running.

I thought I'd give the Bob Harper Inside Out DVDs a whirl today. I did the two short workouts (about 20 minutes each). One strength training and the other from the cardio disk that was butt and balance. Not really high calorie burn for the 40 minutes but it did work my balance a lot and my muscles felt it. I could probably increase the weight a little. I used 5lbs since it was the first time around. I think I'll try the 1 hour strength on Wednesday. That one looked pretty intense.
Not too busy a day at work. Enough to keep myself occupied but not frantic.
I baked some fiber one muffins (recipe from Chris Freytag website) for my husband's breakfast.

Hopefully they'll taste as good as they smell.
We're having baking chicken tonight. We put it in brine last night so it should be moist and flavorful. I'm also making fiesta blend vegetables and Trader Joe's Harvest Grain Blend. I love the Israeli couscous.
It should be a tasty dinner.
Oh well, time to clean the cat box. emoticon

Its Sunday and the Rain Finally Showed Up and I Baked Cookies (big surprise)

When I got up this morning I debated with myself about doing some yoga. I finally convinced myself that I should. I can always use some stretching and perhaps it would help my sore-ish knees. I guess all the running really is getting to them. They don't hurt while I'm running. Only after I'm done. They don't really hurt very much...just a little sore sometimes. Yesterday I put the incline at 1% to see if that would take a little stress off them. They seem less sore so maybe that's what they needed. I'll continue to do that and see how it goes.
Anyway, yoga. I did the Crunch Fat Burning Yoga and Crunch The Joy of Yoga. I prefer the Fat Burning one. It's somehow more fun even though it's the same instructor.
I tried out some Harry & David Banana Peanut Butter with my English muffin for breakfast today. Wow, that stuff is tasty. Kind of expensive so I won't be getting it very often. It was a nice treat.
Did some basic chores. We needed to stop by the bank and I realized I hadn't gotten eggs yesterday so we headed over to Safeway. There is a Panda Express there so we had lunch first. We tried to have Panda last night for dinner but it was super crowded so we walked over to the El Pollo Loco...they didn't have any white meat chicken available..bummer. We ended up at L&L Hawaiian..teriyaki chicken, brown rice and broccoli. Fairly healthy except for the salt.
Today we went to a different Panda Express and were able to have it....steamed vegetables instead of rice or chow mein, broccoli beef and string bean chicken breast. Tasty, fairly healthy except for the salt. I need to be salt free tomorrow or something.
I baked some chocolate-dipped cherry shortbread cookies this afternoon. I got the recipe from my SparkFriend Silentpawz.

The chocolate is setting but we had a taste already. Fabulous!!! As I write this, the rain is pouring down. It was supposed to rain on Friday ...nope, Saturday...not much, finally we get some today.

    I have the same yoga DVD! Like you, I prefer the Fat Burning one, too. The only thing I dislike is how short the shivasana (sp?) is and that she reminds us to get "busy" being still. That word always throws my relaxation off! :0P So glad you enjoyed the session--hope your knees feel better after your next run!

    I'm so glad you tried the recipe and they came out good! I'll be making a triple batch next weekend for the cookie exchange at work. :-)

I hope the knees feel better soon. Knees are the most unforgiving joint in the human body, I think. Sometimes we just need to listen to them and ease up when they aren't happy. And I think yoga can fix almost anything...I swear by it! ;-)

    I hope the soreness of the knees goes away soon. I read somewhere, can't remember where, that if you soak in warm water with Epsom salt after any workout that causes your muscles to be sore it helps to relieve the soreness. When I was doing X Bike I would come home and soak. It helped and I was less sore after each ride. Hope this helps.
