Monday and back at work

Monday, November 29, 2010

Since it was a work day, I was up at 2:45 to workout. I couldn't decide if I wanted to do Jackie Warner or Jillian Michaels for my circuit training. I ended up doing Xtreme Timesaver Training followed by 30 Day Shred Level 1. Boy, the shred level 1 is really hard after you've just done Jackie's workout.
It was a busy day at work. It usually is after a little time off. At least it kept me from watching the clock.
I just mixed up a batch of chocolate chip cookie dough. We've got some visitors coming by the lab tomorrow so I thought it would be nice to have some treats. I also just ate 2 cookies worth of dough so that's all the cookie eating I will do. Now that I've written it down, it will be done.
I guess it's a good thing that I'm running in the morning.
I think I've had more sweets today ( I also had a few jelly bellys) than I had all last week. Odd except that I realized that it's probably PMS. TOM is due this weekend. Now it makes sense to me. No worries.
After dinner I'll be baking the cookies. We're having some Indian food tonight. Just heat and serve. I'll make some brown rice...it'll have to be jasmine because we don't have any basmati. It'll be fine.
Tomorrow, I vow no sweets. Please check up on me so that I will follow through.
Have a good rest of the evening and I hope everybody has a great week back at work.

Remember that no sweets commitment! You will feel better -- it's ok to indulge now and again, just not on a regular basis.

Lazy Sunday

Sunday, November 28, 2010

Malika woke me up at 3am because she was hungry. I went downstairs and gave her a little food. Happily I was able to fall back asleep for another couple of hours. I think this is the latest I've slept in a couple of weeks.
For some reason, I was very hungry this morning so instead of exercising right away I ended up having my oatmeal first. Then I had to wait a while before I could do my workout.
I guess I've changed my yoga day to Sundays. I tried out Shiva Rea Daily Yoga this time the Heart & Air practice. Maybe it's just me, but I have a hard time following her and the moves in this one were very difficult. Definitely not for the beginner (me). I don't know if I'm going to attempt any more of the practices on that disc. She doesn't describe the poses well at all. You have to already know them. After that I did Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown workout 1. Much better. Easy to follow and I even had a little sweat going which was pretty good 'cos it was pretty cold in the house.
We headed over to the International Gourmet Buffet for lunch. Mostly because I was craving lots of vegetables and they have a good selection. I did go back for a second plate but both times my plate was at least 1/2 steamed vegetables...yummy. I also had garlic string beans, tasty persian rice, boiled pinto beans, koobideh, and chicken kabob. A fairly healthy group of stuff.
I avoided the mashed potatoes, bacon, eggs, french toast, pasta, creamed spinach, creamed corn, etc. No desserts for me. They don't usually have things I like at the buffets. I think because I do so much baking, I prefer my own stuff.
After lunch we walked over to PetSmart to see if they had some dry food that my picky kitty would eat. We finally got some by nature brand food. It has liver in it so I thought she might approve. She love the Friskies that we feed the stray cats but I'd prefer she didn't have so much corn meal. We shall see.
We also went to the Auto Zone and got new wiper blades for both of our cars. As the rainy season is beginning it's a good idea to replace them.
I just folded some laundry and have another load in the washer.
Okay, maybe not so lazy but mellower than the rest of the weekend.
Have a good Sunday all!

I can't believe you consider that a LAZY Sunday! Wow! I laid around the house most of the day and then went for a 5-mile run. It's soooo cold in this computer room that I can only stay on here for a minute before my fingers freeze, but I at least wanted to check in with you! Will hook up the netbook downstairs as soon as I get my Garmin synced to the main pc here (DH got me a Garmin 305 for our anniversary and I finally got to use it today!). I finished WW training yesterday so now I'm just waiting for some kind of schedule. I'm afraid it won't be many hours so I will have to concentrate on finding another job this week as well. School is going well, just extremely busy. Hope all is well with you!

Rainy Saturday and Another 4 Mile Run

Saturday, November 27, 2010

I slept in until 4 today. Hungry kitties make excellent alarm clocks.
I have finish week one of B210K. I did all the intervals at 5.9mph and added a minute to the last one so I could make 4 miles. Today started out a little harder than Thursday. Some days just do, I guess but after I'd one the first interval I was raring to go.
We went to Michael's Crafts so I could pick up some cookie and cupcake boxes for presents. I wasn't sure what size cookie boxes I would need, so I got a few different sizes and styles. It depends on how big the cookies are and how many I decide to give to people. We then went to Big 5 to look at an exercise bike that will be on sale tomorrow for $55 (regularly $100). They didn't have any out for us to see. I know it would be crappy. I was just thinking it might be nice to set up in the living room to burn off a few extra calories while watching TV. I didn't want to buy one without at least sitting on it and seeing how cheesy it was going to be. I think I'll take a look at craigslist and see if anybody's got a reasonably priced (or free) one.
We tried out a new taqueria...La Mordida. Very tasty but a little salty. I drank lots of water so it should be fine. It definitely satisfied my carnitas craving and they had hand made corn tortillas....super yum! I will definitely be having something light for dinner, though.
It's been raining on and off all day. I can't complain because we could definitely use it. It's supposed to be sunny tomorrow (according to the Yahoo weather, anyway). I guess we'll see about that.
Have an excellent Saturday. Don't shop too hard.

Well, you could've been here, where it was flurrying off & on all day. Seesh, only Nov. & it's already snowed twice!

My run is today, but it's way cold this morning so I think I'll wait a while. I don't feed the cats first thing when I get up -- hence they don't start being annoying (usually) unless I've slept late.

Great job on your intervals!

Hmm. I see that there isn't a store called Hobby Lobby by you. I LOVE that place. For instance, just plain white 1lb. treat boxes are $2.48/4boxes. And they have tons of "chinese" take out boxes ( regular and mini size) in so many fun patterns/colors. Add Hobby Lobby to the list of things to do after you convince your husband to come to MN! (Perhaps he likes to ? fish? ) or save the trip to MN and go to www.hobbylobby.com

Good luck on finding an exercise bike! My mom bought one of those foot pedal things that you do while seated in a chair/couch, instead of a bike so that might be an option if you want more space.

Not so Black Friday

Friday, November 26, 2010

My brother came over yesterday morning. We went out to lunch and when we got back we put the turkey in the oven at about 1:30. According to the Butterball.com site it should have taken 3-3.5 hours to cook a 16 pound unstuffed bird. I made the cranberry orange sauce at about 3:30 to give it time to cool off because the family was supposed to be arriving at 5pm. At about 4 we started peeling and cutting up the potatoes and then cooked them up. My brother was on mashed potato duty...he makes really good ones. He did put in a stick of butter but then used chicken stock to thin them out. There were a ton of potatoes and they were very tasty.
We checked the turkey at 5pm and it still wasn't up to temperature. The family arrived at about 5:30 so we checked the turkey....not done. Again at 6....finally done. I won't be trusting the butterball website for cooking times.
Everybody enjoyed the Thanksgiving meal. Grandma complimented us on the gravy (and she is a gravy pro). My MIL asked for the stuffing recipe. They wanted leftovers. I'd call it a success.
I did Jillian Michaels No More Trouble Zones for today's circuit training. I think I need to start using 5lbs on some of the exercises because 3's seemed a little light today.
Then we walked to Southern Kitchen for breakfast. Then we headed out to San Francisco (driving and then BART, not walking) to the Auto Show. Lots of cars to see. It was a lot of fun. It was very busy downtown with people shopping so we did our best to avoid them. We did a bit of walking in San Francisco. According to my pedometer, 3.5 miles. Not bad.
Went to lunch at a pub and got really crappy service. It took a half hour for anybody to check to see if our food was ready and then my husband didn't even get the hamburger he ordered. It took another half hour to flag down our waitress and have them put in the order. My brother and I had already finished eating by the time my husband got his food. Then the bill arrived and they didn't even comp us his burger. Needless to say, the tip wasn't too big.
We were going to check out the Virgin Megastore...it's been a long time since we've been and now that Tower Records is gone there really are no music stores. It was gone. But just up the street was the Ferrari store so we went in and I bought my husband a $20 mug for Chanukah. Better than a $300 umbrella. We headed over to the Ghirardelli store next door and my husband got a little chocolate for my present. We got back on BART and then drove home.
Long day but nice.

    sounds Delicious
I didn't have the traditional Thanksgiving fest and could use some stuffing and turkey and whole cranberry sauce.

Your trip to SF sounds fun as well... its been 4 years since I've been there.. definitely time to go back ( my bff's awesome purse purchased there is in need of replacing, I'd like to try Tommy's Joynt ((as seen on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives)) Want to pick up some wine in Napa, oh of course visit my friend in Santa Clara and hit rollerskating with you!) I've been seeing SUPERCHEAP flights.. as low as $149RT in December. AHHHH!

I am going to OPEN my Jillian Michael's DVD today... I think :0 I need an accountability partner on that!

Take care and AWESOME job on making your walking and workouts fun :)

Sounds like a great time. I'm so glad I wasn't the one cooking a turkey this year. Turkey intimidates me. LOL. I remember going to the Virgin megastore often when I lived in Arizona. We used to go there and listen to CDs, then go by the ones we liked someplace cheaper. ;) This was pre-You Tube and iTunes of course.

I started a busy Thanksgiving with a 4 mile run

Thursday, November 25, 2010

I did the B210K week 1 day 2 run (4 10 minute runs and 3 1 minutes walks). The first 10 minute run was 5.8mph. I decided to up it to 5.9 for the remaining 3 runs. I added an extra minute on to the last run..making my total running mileage 4 miles. Definitely the longest I've ever run!
I just finished a bowl of oatmeal and now it's time to get started on the stuffing (well, dressing actually because it's not going inside the turkey). I've got a slow cooker recipe which should work out nicely and saves stove/oven room for other things.
We had quite the adventure getting the turkey brined last night. My husband brought home some turkey roasting bags as well as some reinforced tall kitchen bags. We started with the roasting bag. I held it open and my husband gently placed the 16 pound turkey in the bag. The turkey proceeded to fall straight through the bottom of the bag and on to the floor emoticon.
He picked it up and washed if off in the sink while I wiped up all the turkey juiced from the floor, making sure to use disinfecting wipes after I had gotten all the juices. It's a good thing he got the kitchen bags. Try number two was successful. That bag worked great. We put the brine in and I found a stock pot that would hold the turkey and we put it in the fridge. YAY!! emoticon
I should go down and start sauteing the celery, onions and mushrooms for the dressing.
Have an excellent Thanksgiving everyone!

I put together my side dishes in the morning and got them in the fridge so they were ready to pop in the oven later. I got my little one down for a nap and then did w2d1 of b210k. I ran outside for just about 4 miles. Brrrr! We got snow yesterday and the interstates were closed down from ice for most of the morning, but I dressed myself in my run outfit in the morning so I felt committed to get out there. Felt good to get a run in before wrestling with the turkey. I hope you had a good holiday!

Thanksgiving always makes for such entertaining stories!

Thanksgiving used to be my mom's big holiday. She's had birds as big as 25 lbs! Since it was just me, my sister's family, & my folks, this year it was a scrawny 12 lbs. No stories to relate.

Hope you enjoyed your meal!

Oops, almost forgot -- congrats on the 4 mile run -- awesome!
