I started a busy Thanksgiving with a 4 mile run

Thursday, November 25, 2010

I did the B210K week 1 day 2 run (4 10 minute runs and 3 1 minutes walks). The first 10 minute run was 5.8mph. I decided to up it to 5.9 for the remaining 3 runs. I added an extra minute on to the last run..making my total running mileage 4 miles. Definitely the longest I've ever run!
I just finished a bowl of oatmeal and now it's time to get started on the stuffing (well, dressing actually because it's not going inside the turkey). I've got a slow cooker recipe which should work out nicely and saves stove/oven room for other things.
We had quite the adventure getting the turkey brined last night. My husband brought home some turkey roasting bags as well as some reinforced tall kitchen bags. We started with the roasting bag. I held it open and my husband gently placed the 16 pound turkey in the bag. The turkey proceeded to fall straight through the bottom of the bag and on to the floor emoticon.
He picked it up and washed if off in the sink while I wiped up all the turkey juiced from the floor, making sure to use disinfecting wipes after I had gotten all the juices. It's a good thing he got the kitchen bags. Try number two was successful. That bag worked great. We put the brine in and I found a stock pot that would hold the turkey and we put it in the fridge. YAY!! emoticon
I should go down and start sauteing the celery, onions and mushrooms for the dressing.
Have an excellent Thanksgiving everyone!

I put together my side dishes in the morning and got them in the fridge so they were ready to pop in the oven later. I got my little one down for a nap and then did w2d1 of b210k. I ran outside for just about 4 miles. Brrrr! We got snow yesterday and the interstates were closed down from ice for most of the morning, but I dressed myself in my run outfit in the morning so I felt committed to get out there. Felt good to get a run in before wrestling with the turkey. I hope you had a good holiday!

Thanksgiving always makes for such entertaining stories!

Thanksgiving used to be my mom's big holiday. She's had birds as big as 25 lbs! Since it was just me, my sister's family, & my folks, this year it was a scrawny 12 lbs. No stories to relate.

Hope you enjoyed your meal!

Oops, almost forgot -- congrats on the 4 mile run -- awesome!

Preparing for Thanksgiving

Wednesday, November 24, 2010

I did actually sleep in this morning. Until 3:30am with the cat lying on my chest.
I put the turkey brine that had finally cooled down to room temperature in the fridge. I'll be brining it tonight. I had a little breakfast and did a little cleaning.
Then I did some circuit training.. Jari Love Get Ripped 1000 (because you're supposed to be able to burn up to 1000 calories and hour...yeah...right). It was a pretty good workout and I did sweat a lot, but only burned about 250 calories according to my heart rate monitor. I think part of the problem is they get the actual calories burned performing the strength exercises while the heart rate monitor can't do that.
I baked the Sparkling Cranberry Gems in a fall shapes cookie pan. The first batch I didn't put enough dough in the spaces so they didn't get very good shapes. The second batch worked much better:

For dinner tonight we'll be having some salmon burgers with sweet potato waffle fries and whatever vegetable I pull out of the freezer.
Tomorrow, after I do my day 2 of B210K, starts the real cooking: stuffing, gravy, turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes. It should be fine, I've got helpers (no, not the cat...she's not very helpful).
Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

Have a great Thanksgiving! We have just a normal day up here in Canada. Will be thinking of all my American Sparkfriends enjoying the celebration today. Thanksgiving is not nearly as much of a big deal here as it is in the States. Hopefully no turkey coma for you tonight.

We are brining the turkey overnight also. We are doing turkey, ham, sweet potato mash, fresh green bean and mushroom saute, corn muffins, orange-cranberry relish and butternut squash soup. I hope it all turns out really good! HA! I think the guests will be ok with 'healthy Thanksgiving'... at least I hope so!

Jojo didn't like us but I started B210K

Tuesday, November 23, 2010

Apparently, Jojo is not the cat for us. She just sat in the corner and glared at us the whole time we were there. I hope her owner will find somebody that Jojo does like to take her in. Cats definitely choose their owners. There was another cat we were eyeing at the PetSmart but Malika decided we were going to be her owners and we're very happy about it!
On our way out to meet Jojo, we stopped to have some dinner. We ended up at a tiny place called Mr. Falafel. We saw it and couldn't resist. The food was delicious..I had a falafel wrap (no tahini...I don't like it) and my husband had a chicken shwerma wrap. I couldn't finish mine but that's okay...my husband did. They make fresh hot sauce and this stuff actually had a little kick (note: I douse my food in habanero hot sauce on a regular basis so if I can detect heat...it's pretty hot).
I got to bed pretty late last night...after 9pm (which is late if you're getting up at 2:45). I did get up and started the B210K training. Week 1 is run 10 minutes then walk 1 min x4. It was weird to be back running intervals but it was still a good run. Most of the running was 5.8mph but the last 3 minutes was at 6mph because AC/DC's Heatseeker came on and that just makes me want to run faster ;-). So, very close to 4 miles...the longest I have ever run!
It's been a busy day at work. I'm actually waiting for some samples to finish drying which is why I have time to blog.
On tonight's menu is ma po tofu. We haven't had it in a long time. I do have to remember not to add too much cayenne pepper to it this time. The last time I ended up making it to hot for my husband.
I'm taking tomorrow off of work to start prepping for the holiday. Lots of cleaning, laundry, some baking to do. So even though I won't be at work, I'll still be busy...that's okay. I can sleep in a little later than 2:45. emoticon
Have a great Tuesday night everybody!!

    Maybe Jojo was shy? :)
I love love love falafel. Yummm.... Reminds me of our trip to Israel.
I like my food on the spicy side also. I never did until I met my husband and he showed me how much better food tastes with some heat!
Congrats on your run. I know I will be reading about your first marathon in the not-too-distant future. :) Never heard of B210K.
Thank you for the goodie and have a great day tomorrow!

Way to go on the training! It is hard to go back to intervals... I'm still struggling with that one, even though I haven't really been doing the B210k training. I am running differently than when I first started... more of the 'correct' way as far as running physics goes! It has made a huge difference in my speed, but I don't have the endurance I used to have when I was running at a turtle's pace! So I've incorporated walking into my runs when I need to. I know it makes you ultimately stronger, so I'll keep at it!!!!

Have a great Thanksgiving!!!!

How in the world do you stay awake, much less exercise, with that little sleep? I'm in bed by 8:30 9 -- actually turn the light off between 9 -10 -- but I don't get up til 5!

Enjoy your prep time tomorrow. This week has been a bit crazy for me, but I'm hoping to have some time to make something tomorrow to bring to my folks.

Oh, you're training a 10K next? That's awesome! I'm done with C25K, and am running my first 5K on Thursday. Afterwards I'm going to train and 8K, and then after that start increasing my pace. I use all of the Podrunner intervals, which do all the thinking for you...I just have to sit back and keep time with the music, and it's easy : )

Yeah, the interval training was hard to get used to again after finishing c25k. Unfortunately, b210k is not going so well for me. I am not able to keep the same schedule I had with c25k and I just haven't found a good alternative. Boo.

I still cannot get over how early you get up!!!

I love the intervals! That break you can take is nice and you end up progressing as long as you keep increasing the time.

I take it you are on a treadmill right? We are still in construction, close to being done. This weekend, the garage will be rearranged and I'll get my treadmill to be accessible as I am running out of options to be outside!

We're going to meet Jojo tonight!

Monday, November 22, 2010

Even though my shoulders were a little sore from yoga yesterday, I went ahead and did Jackie Warner Xtreme Timesaver Training this morning. Again, it was an excellent workout. I really like that one!
I had a busy day at work. It made the time go by very fast, though.
I'm not sure where we will be going for dinner tonight. We are going to meet our possible new cat, Jojo. I guess we'll find out if we can get along. I'm kind of torn because I don't know how our cat, Malika, will adjust. I don't want her to be mad at us for bringing a new kitty home emoticon. I doubt Jojo will come home with us tonight even if we do decide to take her. Hard decision.
I hope everyone has a good evening.
I'll keep you update on the kitty situation.

Awww exciting!!! Getting a new kitty! I know what you mean though about your hesitations... cats are so funny about their space, and have a tendency to dislike other cats right away-- at least if they are both "alpha" sorts of personalities. I hope your kitties get along! Mine is so bossy and assertive, I'm not sure she'd do too well with another cat, although I desperately want one. She's better with my mom's dogs, since she just thinks they're bumbling crazies. LOL.

Most cats will be bent out of shape for at least a while.

Puss, one of my previous cats, hated all other cats with a passion. She lived with Cleo for all of Cleo's 16 years, merely tolerating her.

She hated the boys (our present cats) with a passion til the day she died (at the age of 21). She lived with them for 4 yrs, in fact; we truly didn't think she'd live that long.

But they managed to get along, even so.

Well, let us know how it went!

I did yoga today

Sunday, November 21, 2010

Since I hadn't done yoga this week or last, I thought that today should be the day. I tried out a couple of new (to me) yoga DVDs. I started out with Shiva Rea Daily Energy Vinyasa Flow Yoga and did the Earth practice. It was okay..about 20 minutes. Then I tried out Crunch Fat Burning Yoga. I liked that one more...less yoga speaky and it was about 40 minutes. I will try the others on the Daily Energy disc...there are 7 different practices.
Had a little oatmeal with fiber one and protein powder for breakfast. Later we went out for lunch and I had a greek egg white omelet (spinach, tomato, feta...yum!, sausage and egg whites). I only had half so I'll be having that tomorrow...not sure if it'll be breakfast or lunch.
I'm going to bake some chocolate chip cookies later. My husband will bring them either to his friend's house (if he goes on Tuesday) or to work. We might be out tomorrow night (which is why I'm baking them today) to meet a cat named Jojo. Apparently her owner is moving and needs to place her in a new home. I haven't heard if that's going to work out with her owner for tomorrow night. If we like Jojo and (probably most importantly) she likes us we might have two cats.
That's the happenings for today.
I hope everybody had a relaxing Sunday.
It should be a short week for most people, so that's nice.
