The new shoes are nice

I tried out my new shoes this morning. With the insoles they came with not the fancy custom ones because you're supposed to start with those slowly and not actually run in them right away. My ankle felt good. As far as I could tell there was no pain there. My achilles tendon area felt a little sore but not sharp pain. I guess I need more stretching for my calves. I rolled them out on the foam roller after I finished. I shall try to do that every day to keep them loose.
We went to the Good Guys Classic Car Show for a couple of hours today. It was fun to see some cars that I haven't seen in a while but it amazes me how much the ones for sale were. A Chevy Nova should not be $10,000. Come on, it's a Nova.
We were starving so we left because we didn't want to eat "fair food." We ended up at a nearby kabob place. My husband had the chicken shwerma plate (shwerma, hummus, rice, salad, pita) and I had the veggie plate (falafel, hummus, tabouli, baba ganoush, dolmas, salad, pitas). It was all very tasty. The baba ganoush was very yogurty and the tabouli was mostly parsley- very refreshing since it was pretty warm in Pleasanton.
Not sure what we'll be doing for dinner. I guess we'll figure that out in a couple of hours.

New Shoe Saturday

My ankle is doing very well today. I get an occasional twinge but not always when I'm walking. Sometimes it happens if I'm just sitting doing nothing. I think the nerve is just being weird.
We went to RoadRunner Sports today and I did the Shoedog shoe fitting thing. They told me I need a light stability shoe, so I got some new shoes. My husband also had his feet checked since he had never done it. He need neutral and finally found some wide enough (New Balance). We both got some fancy insoles that are molded to our feet. Good for me, I think because apparently the arch on one of my feet is flatter than the other.
We had Thai for lunch. Yellow curry chicken, garlic chicken and bacon fried rice. Yes, bacon. Boy that was good. It was big pieces of bacon and I only had one piece. The fried rice was not oily at all.
I came home and did some weight training. Jari Love Ripped to the Core. This one has some compound exercises so that was fun for a change.
After my shower, we headed over to our local Chavez Supermarket. They have a taqueria in the store which is very good. I had some barbacoa (Mexican brisket). Very tasty.
All in all, a very good day. I will try out my new running shoes tomorrow. Don't worry, if my ankle acts up I promise to stop running.

    Take care of your ankle and enjoy your new shoes.

There is a good stretch that I do for my left ankle - the one that I fractured years ago and had hardware in and then hardware out. I did allot of PT back then, but there is one exercise that I have kept. Laying on your back, lift one leg and draw the the alphabet with your toe - do this 2x for each ankle. It is great for strenghtening the ligaments as well as blood flow. emoticon

    I'm glad your ankle is better! What kind of shoes did you end up getting this time? I LOVE my Brooks! Now that we moved there is no Road Runner around here. The local running store is Aardvark Sports. Can't wait to check them out!

    YAY! Glad you got some new shoes. They can only help. I will need some new workout shoes myself, and a pair just for running. It's a pricey endeavor so I keep putting it off, Maybe a few months after the holiday craziness is over.

I really am taking a day off of exercise today

My ankle is feeling better today but still a little sore. It was fine after I finished running yesterday but it started to feel a little sore later in the day. My back is feeling a little achy, too. I think I over did it on Wednesday and that probably did my ankle in as well (with the jumping). I guess I should have taken Wednesday off.
Today, I will listen to my body and give it a rest. Now that I have written it down, I will do it. I have a bad habit of saying I will take a day off and then do some exercise anyway. I'm obviously in need of a rest but it is so hard to take it. I feel very guilty and antsy when I don't do some exercise. But before I do anymore damage, I know I need to rest.
We had a good dinner with our friends last night. We went for Afghani food. I had some chicken breast kabob and rice. We also go a side of some potato and vegetable stew. It was all very tasty.
The candy corn were calling me in the afternoon and I broke down and have 1 serving. I made sure to count them. I didn't go over my calories and for a change was actually in range for carbs (recently I've been low but not Atkins low).
I'm hoping my ankle will feel okay tomorrow so I get check out some new running shoes. If it doesn't do better by Monday, I'll even go to see the doctor about it. Just to make sure I haven't done something horrible to it. It doesn't hurt a lot it's just sort of annoying and I want it pain free.
I hope everybody has a fabulous Friday. I'm definitely looking forward to the weekend. It's even supposed to warm up here a little.

    I hope your ankle gets better soon. I know what you mean about feeling bad about not being able to workout, but you need to rest until you are all better. Get plenty of rest...

    Hiya Nat! Been missing you but still completely crazy here. Wanted to just add something about the shoes: my husband checked his stride online and determined he was neutral plus, but when he went to Road Runner they told him he needed stability. It actually turned out he just needed a EE (wide) with support on the outer sides. Since you seem so tiny, I'm wondering if maybe you should try a narrower shoe? Just a thought :)

I know how you feel I try to get 10,000 steps in each day and the only way yo do that is to go for a walk or some cardio. BUT we need to listen to our bodies!

    do you have an ace bandage? It might be a good idea to wrap your ankle for support, I know when my ankles are being argumentative a day off workouts and wrapping it helps.
mmm candy corn, the delicious treat that has no right to be as tasty as it is. There were 5 different kinds of candy corn in this house over Halloween, lol

I finished Week 8 of C25K

I did run this morning in my new shoes because they didn't hurt my ankle on Sunday when I ran 30 minutes. I had used my old shoes on Tuesday for the 33 minute 3 mile run. Well, my ankle was a little sore this morning anyway but was definitely more sore as I started on my run. I had in incline at 0.5% and started out at 5.5mph then quickly upped it to 5.6mph. I tried going up to 1% but that didn't feel any better so I went down to 0%. I think that did help a little. I upped it to 5.7 mph and stayed there at 0%. My ankle got less sore but it didn't go away. Maybe I need totally different shoes. I did go about 3 miles even with the pain. I must really be a runner (or just stupid...maybe both).
When I first started trying to run I went online and check all the shoe advisors and they told me I needed motion control shoes because I have flat feet. Well I tried them for a while and my knees started to bother me and my ankle did, too. I went to a running shoe store and had them check me out. They told me I did not pronate at all and needed a neutral shoe so that's what I got and had been using up until Sunday when I tried a new pair of neutral shoes (ASICS instead of Nike). Maybe I need a stability shoe. A Road Runner Sports is opening up this weekend nearby. I'm going to go in and see what they recommend. I'm hoping I just need a new shoe rather than a new ankle.
I suppose I'm really completely done with the C25K. I can run 3 miles and would run farther except for that ankle. Once I get that worked out, I will try running longer. Maybe do the B210K so I can join Laura's team.
We're heading out for Afghani food for dinner tonight for our friend's birthday. I'm eyeing some chicken kabobs on the menu. I think I need some extra protein as I've come in slightly low the past few days.
It should be a good day. Very quiet here at the VA since that actual VA employees have the day off. Being a Stanford employee, I have to work but that's okay. It gives me a chance to say Hi to the veteran's on their day.

    Hey have you considered seeing a treadmill rather then just the people working in the shoe store? I was getting loads of leg pain when I first started running, turned out my feet turn out, the podiatrist put inserts in my shoes and I haven't had any problems with them since!

Good on you for finishing the program though!

    Hi there!!! Yes new shoes would be much easier than a new ankle!!! I have Asics and Saucony that I run in. My knee hurts a little today, but it didn't hurt when I ran. I run w/ a brace as a preventative measure. Have you thought about a brace for your ankle? More for support.

I ran last night and was upset. Yes you read that write. I had NO FREAKING PODCASTS. emoticon.

I flagged them as unplayed like you said and the blue dot got filled to 100% again, so I thought I was good. I unselected all of them except the on I wanted on there and low and behold last night.. it was not there!

So I check now and the one I wanted is 1/2 dotted...grrr. corrected and trying again now. Teach me for booking out of the office w/o verifying it was there! I still got in a 38 minute run instead of the podcast at 45. Had just enough light too. Tomorrow there is a 20% chance of rain in am, hopefully it doesn't. I can squeak in a 45 minute run tomorrow and not be in the dark. that won't last long though!

I was going to take the day off of exercise

When I got up this morning, I was still sore from my weight workout on Monday. Upper body, anyway. My arms especially. So I thought, I'll just sleep in and take the day off of exercise.
At work, I'm participating in a fitness challenge with a group of ladies in Nutrition & Food Service. We compete against other groups to see who gets the most fitness hours. You have to submit weekly the number of minutes you did as low, moderate or high intensity. This has forced me to wear my heart rate monitor every time I exercise because I can't tell sometimes (especially doing weights) how intense it is.
Anyway, we got an email from our leader implying we need to step up our minutes. I saw the totals and perhaps some people are fudging their numbers. I figured I'd try to get in a workout today just to add more hours. So I did Tonique which they were showing On Demand. It's a shortened version of the DVD that I have (but haven't tried yet). Pretty good workout. 30 minutes, gets you sweating. I did not use hand weights because: 1. I was trying to rest my upper body and 2. I've never done the workout before and figured it would be good to go without. Then I did just the lower body exercises of Jari Love's Slim & Lean. I got in over an hour of exercise. Not to shabby for a day off.
My foot is feeling much better. I did some extra calf stretches and that seems to have helped. There was some jumping/jogging in place in the Tonique and it didn't bother my foot. Fingers crossed for a good run tomorrow (at no incline and maybe not 3 miles).
I think the water is boiling for my whole wheat (organic, of course) penne and I've got some 3 bean chili and aparagus to have with it. Should be a tasty dinner.

    Ha. I mis-read the title and thought that you said that you were taking the day off TO exercise ( as in skipping work) and I thought.. WOW, now there's dedication to "the lifestyle!"
Too funny. I need to not read the blogs when I'm in a hurry to get out the door. I'm off to a free seminar at REI on Winter Wardrobes/dressing to play outdoors :)
