My first Open water Triathlon

Monday, August 15, 2011

Richard and I survived my first open water sprint triathlon. Richard has done plenty, but a first for me. It was hard swimming that far without any wall hang time. I swear sometimes I think I am Kilroy when I hang on the wall. Made it and did meet that goal. Not sure if I want to do the Toyota Sprint tri with the 800m open water swim. I was really tired after 500. The lake was so low, we have the worst drought in years. The last 25m the water was so shallow that my hand hit the bottom of the lake. So I figured I should just walk it in. Richard had a bike wreak that gave him so road rash and bent folks on the bike. He was able to bend them back and finish the race. But the bike is replaced. He has had it 25 years, so I think he could use another. So two weeks from now we are doing the Hotter that Hell 100 in Wichita Falls, Texas. Should be fun is the middle of this heat wave. We got lucky with the tri. Rained the night before and and the sun didn't come out until we were done. Photos on my spark page.

WooHoo and way to go! It gets a little easier every time. Silver City, New Mexico is having a cool "fun" ride on the first of October. 52, 72, or 106 miles along part of the Tour of the Gila course. You should come join us.

COngrats on your first OWS... Here in the Northeat the vast majority of ours are all OWS...no way around it... And it's an accomplishment to finish.. be proud!

Congrats!!! I found my first (& only so far!) OWS triathlon pretty scary. This drought is just BAD! We got our boat off of our lift for the last time last weekend...the water is just TOO LOW! And, I don't think we'll be getting the jet skis out, either.

Anyway, a sprint with an 800 meter OWS! Yikes! That sounds TOUGH. And, I've looked at the Hotter than Hell. Was thinking about doing it several months ago, but I haven't trained for it. And, in this heat!! I hope you have a wonderful, safe ride!

First 10K

Saturday, March 26, 2011

Did my first 10K today. It was a really hard route with lots of hills, all up and into the wind. Just kidding about that part, but it did have lots of hills. I am glad to have said I did it, but it was very tough. I will have to train a little more seriously if I do another. I find sprint triathlons less difficult. Maybe because of less running. My bad knees are talking to me, hope they are not worse tomorrow. I guess there is a reason the ortho doc said don't do more than a 5K. I will probably have to follow that advice.

Congrats on you raccomplishment! Sorry to hear about your knees. That's too bad. But, there are so many other things you can do... like, as you said, the 5Ks and tris! It sounds like they are just easier on your body!

Again, CONGRATS! You DID IT!

Way to go on your accomplishment!

Pay attention to your knees. I was out for 2 months after walk/jogging a full marathon. The doctor indicated that I had soft tissue damage.

You want to be able to do all that you enjoy without injury! Maybe a bit of swimming, or water exercises this week will give your knees a rest?!?

Big D marathon, half marathon and 5K

Wednesday, December 08, 2010

My triathlon partner just finished the White Rock half marathon. Really made me want to be there but with my bad knees I didn't think a half marathon was in my future. She also motivated another co-worker who used to work out with us to shoot for the Big D half marathon in April in Dallas. She pointed out to me that if the contestants on Biggest Loser could do a marathon, I can do a half. And you know their joints are all shot. Currently I can do 4 to 4 1.2 miles without much problem. I remember not to long ago that would have been impossible. So here goes, new goal. Don't tell my orthopedist, he will not be happy when he has to put my knees back together after that run. I am going to start training and go for it. That race also has a 5k, so I can fall back on that if needed. Never thought I would do a tri either, and I have 4 of those done for 2010. Wish me luck! Gotta run.

I have to agree with LILPAT3. A trip to the ortho might be a wise choice to lay out Your plan. I went to see an ortho before my first half to have my knees checked. The pain I've got is due to a tiny bone spur. Just saw him yesterday for some foot pain; same diagnosis.

You have plenty of training time, so that's not an issue. But, before you do something that could impact the rest of your life, I'd get a doctor's opinion.

Listen to your body...if it hurts quit doing what is bothering you. That said, my ortho told me I would never run again, and apparently he is right. However, I am doing my first marathon in March. I am going to walk it and race-walk as far as I can. No shame in having to walk. I hope your training goes well and I know you will complete whatever you decide to do! emoticon

Move done, back to work

Saturday, November 27, 2010

I finally got the house sold and fininshed the move. Now I just have to build the barn, fence, and supervise the house building! And I thought I had time to train? Oh well, somehow I have to make time for workouts. Afterall, its part of the lifestyle right? Did get a 4 mile run in today and it felt great. Sleep will just have to be optional.

Fun 5k- Trek or Treat, Allen, Texas

Tuesday, November 02, 2010

We ran as the Scooby Doo cast on Oct 30th 5K in Allen, Texas. I was very excited because I got to take my dog and running partner Ellie on her first run. And yes, she played the part of Scooby. The kids all got it, but some of the adults thought she was Super Dog. Not sure what that was all about. She was first in her species group. Mainly because the other dogs were running with very slow owners. I still haven't broke the 10 minute mile mark. Very disappointing. See the attached pic. We are crossing the finish line "Scooby style!"

She's a good little runner. Starts running around when I get the leash. I have a retractable leash, so helps when she needs to stop and smell something
