A Whale of a Story

Wednesday, March 23, 2011

If you read a recent front page story of the San Francisco Chronicle, you would have read about a female humpback whale who had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso and a line tugging in her mouth. A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farallon Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed an environmental group for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her. They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her.

When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed them gently around as she was thanking them.

Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives. The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth said her eyes were following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.

May you and all those you love be so blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you. And, may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude. I pass this on to you, my Spark family & friends, in the same spirit.

PS - This was an email that was forwarded to me the other day. I changed the last paragraph to make it Spark-appropriate. I just checked Snopes.com. This is a true story and a real photo, but the photo is not related to this story. Here's the link to the Snopes.com report. www.snopes.com/photos/animals/whalet

Sherrey directed me to your blog. Thank you so much for sharing this story. It is not only beautiful but amazing. One can see how the environmentalists are so passionate about their jobs. Sometimes animals can give more thanks to humans than humans can. Hopefully however we will help just for the pure joy of helping.

I believe every living animal knows when it is being helped. Such a kindness may not change the animal's basic instincts towards humans forever, but if only for a few moments, makes our contact with them something special. Enjoyed the story. Thanks. -- Lou

This is an email that was sent to me.

Be nice to others because time WILL make a difference!

One day you will no longer be the big dog...
Just the old dog...

And my friend, we are now the old dogs

HOWEVER, OLD DOG IS . . .

. . .BETTER THAN. . .

. . . DOG-GONE.

I think you are barking up the wrong tree....and that really bites. If I can collar my feelings, I will roll over on my thinking about your blog. Well....it is time for me to flea the area and find my warm bed....before I am in the dog house.

Hope you can fetch some fun this week.

Best wishes always....Bill

Gas Registry

Here's your grin for today - a sure sign of how riduculous gas prices could get!

    Very cute....and so accurate.

Gas prices seem to make the news.....but consider those "special" energy drinks. One of my co-workers drinks 2 to 4 of those 5 hours energy drinks a day.....at $3 each. That has to be about a bazillion dollars a gallon. But they do work!! After he drinks on of them, he has plenty of energy to discuss rising gas prices. See....we are all interconnected.

Hope you are having a great weekend, Nancy. Best wishes...Bill

Sadly, because we have to, we all will eventually get used to $4 or so per gallon gas prices, then we'll be happy when it settles back at $3.50. We're so gullible. -- Lou
