Day 143 Accountability

Monday, June 11, 2012

Sunday --

What a difference a day makes. Each day, Harry is getting better. Thank you for prayers and well wishes. This morning, I left him and went to watch my girlfriends participate in the Naperville SheROX triathlon - the one that I was training for when I injured my knee. I wanted to make sure Harry was set with everything he needed before I left for several hours, so I didn't get there until the bike portion. I didn't find my friends, but got to talking to one of the race crew who was going to open up the roads to traffic after the last biker went by. He told me that I could go ahead and bike the route, so I did -- just in front of the police escort that was protecting the last biker. It was a blast! Then I rode the 5K run route backward and found my friends around mile marker 1. I rode along side them as they walked/jogged to the finish. Snapped a couple of pictures of them, and cried when they crossed the finish line. I don't know why that was so emotional for me, but it was! I see it as such a huge accomplishment - one that I still dream of completing.

emoticon1 - Exercise - 15 mile bike ride to and from, as well as on the bike race course of the SheROX triathlon.
emoticon2 - Calories - 1,900. I burned a lot of calories today.
emoticon3 - Sleep - at least 5, plus a couple of hour nap after the bike ride. Spark curfew - 11pm. Night-night.
emoticon4 - Freggies - 1 fruit, 6 veggies.

June 2012 accountability goals --
1 - Exercise at least 30 minutes per day. Per the book, "Younger Next Year," I am going to shoot for 6 days a week of exercise - 2 days of weight training (I'm taking a weight training class) and 4 days of aerobic exercise, mostly biking and swimming.
2 - Track my food and limit my calories to less than 1700 per day. Goal weight is 145 pounds by end of June, so cutting back on calories this month.
3 - Sleep 6+ hours per night. Stop Sparking by 10pm. The number of hours that I sleep is directly related to how late I am Sparking/Facebooking. I've been having a hard time making curfew the last few months. I'm cutting it back to 10pm this month. If I can keep the internet curfew discipline, my sleep will fall in line.
4 - Eat 1 fruit and 4 veggies per day.

That was so nice that you could take part unofficially and enjoy seeing your friends finish. Keep that picture in mind as you heal and believe that one day you, too, will join them crossing the finish line, feeling proud of having been dedicated, determined, focused and positive. Good news about Harry. Hoping his healing continues. -- Lou

Day 142 Accountability

Sunday, June 10, 2012

Saturday --

I brought Harry home from the hospital on Saturday morning, a day later than anticipated. He was running a low-grade fever on Friday morning, and just didn't feel well enough to go home. Saturday morning, he was dressed and ready to go at 8am! What a difference a day made. The doctors still have not determined what the cause of his dizzy spell/nearly passing out/turning greyish was that landed him in the ER. They told him to go home and heal for a couple of weeks. They changed one of his medications that has a side affect of dizziness. If the lightheadness isn't gone in a few weeks after recovering from surgery and being off that medication, then they will pursue more testing.

I was at the hospital the last 7 days, so I'm a bit off track with my workouts and haven't recorded all my food this week. But, I have to say that in the hospital, they put Harry on a heart-healthy diet -- low sodium, low-fat, low-cholesteraol (eat cardboard, according to Harry) -- so I ate pretty healthy there, too. I got a guest tray and had dinner with him each night. I stayed overnight the last 3 nights in his room -- it's no wonder he's so tired during the day, they wake him up every 2-4 hours during the night! Dang, we both crashed on the sofa for several hours this afternoon!

Sunday would have been the day of my first triathlon - had I not messed up my knee. Instead, if Harry is OK with me leaving him alone, I'm going to go cheer my girlfriends on in the race and see what a triathlon is like from a spectator's viewpoint. There are a couple more triathlons in August that I may still attempt to participate in one of them. My girlfriend Cheryl said that she'd do the Pleasant Prairie, WI tri with me. I see there is a "super-sprint" there -- it's a 1/4 Mile Swim, 10 Mile Bike, and 2 Mile Run. Those are nice distances for a first timer. I may see my Spark Buddy JaneTris there, if Cheryl and I do that race. I've got to check Harry's calendar. His son is planning to visit in August - just not sure when he is coming yet.

A friend posted this on her Facebook page. I wanted to share it as my Spark update, but it's too long of a quote, but too good not to share --
ďA bar of iron costs $5, made into horseshoes its worth is $12, made into needles its worth is $3500, made into balance springs for watches, its worth is $300,000. Your own value is determined also by what you are able to make of yourself." Author Unknown

emoticon1 - Exercise - None, except for a short little walk with Harry, per doctor's orders. I slept a good part of the morning/early afternoon, then went to 5pm mass and grocery shopping afterward. Do you know how long it takes to grocery shop when you're reading and comparing labels for sodium and fat content? Geesh!
emoticon2 - Calories - 1,861. Tried some of the low-sodium munchies that I bought for Harry. Not bad, once you get used to having no salt.
emoticon3 - Sleep - at least 8 hours, if I count the 3 hour nap after getting home from the hospital. Spark curfew - 1am. Going to bed now.
emoticon4 - Freggies - 1 fruit, 6 veggies.

I'm late in my blog reading! I'm so glad Harry came back home. I know the worst place to rest is in the hospital, so it's good that you both took it easy in the afternoon. Consuming low sodium food is really not all that bad once you get used to it. I found it a lot easier to give up salt than to give up sugar.
Take it easy my dear, one day at the time!

Has he had heart tests done? I assume that he has. That was probably the first thing they did. It's good they cleared up that carotid artery. Hopefully, that solves it. Your goals sound great for the day. I am the same way with staying up too late sparking (maybe you noticed last night, and it is likely an hour or so later here than where you live. Did you mention you were taking courses? What in?

Glad you both are back home; no one gets any rest in the hospital. I have to assume they checked for ear problems causing the dizziness, but mentioning it anyway. You are doing great for the week you've had. I love the quote. Thanks for sharing! Rest up and enjoy this day.

Day 141 Accountability

Wednesday, June 06, 2012

Tuesday --

A roller coaster day for Harry. Tuesday morning, surgeon told Harry that what happened on Sunday had nothing to do with the carotid blockage, there is something else going on that landed him in the ER. Surgeon called for a neurologist consultation. Surgeon said carotid surgery is necessary, but not urgent. It can probably wait a month or two while they try to find out the root cause of the dizziness. Surgeon ordered a CTA (CT scan with dye) that is more specific than the CT that was done on Sunday.

Neurologist visited on Tuesday afternoon and agreed with the surgeon - carotid endarterectomy is needed, but not urgent, and that something else is going on. Neurologist ordered an EEG, which Harry still has not heard the results of. Later in the afternoon, the CTA results came back showing carotid blockage could be as much as 95%. Now, the carotid endarterectomy is more urgent - would Harry like it this week or next? It is scheduled for this Thursday - probably early in the day. Surgeon will take a vein from his leg to bypass the blockage, cut the blockage out, then sew the leg vein in place of the cut out section. They will use general anesthesia for this procedure. He'll stay in the hospital til Friday.

Thank you in advance for keeping Harry in your thoughts and prayers for peace during this bump in the road; for successful surgery; that God will guide the surgeon's hands; and that the doctors are able to find the root cause of what is going on.

Day 140 Accountability

Tuesday, June 05, 2012

Monday --

Thanks for you concern about Harry. His stress tests came back fine on Monday, so his cardiologist ordered a carotid artery ultrasound. That test revealed that Harry has greater than 70% blockage of his right carotid artery. Tonight, they did an MRA (an MRI with dye) to locate the exact location and size of the blockage. It's a 2cm "tight restriction." He's apparently lucky he hasn't had a stroke.

The surgeon will be in to chat with Harry on Tuesday morning about his options, but the cardiologist told Harry today that he is most likely going to have carotid endarterectomy surgery. We'll have more details after the surgeon's visit on Tuesday.
