Helpful tip for a day of HEAVY cooking

Wednesday, November 21, 2012

When in the kitchen and doing a lot of cooking I always hang a plastic grocery bag on one of the drawers. As I empty boxes of items, cans of food, egg shells, peelings, etc. while preparing meals, I have the plastic bag handy to put the "empties" in. It saves a lot of going to the trash can while preparing several dishes. I have been doing this for years and it is a big help.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL OF MY SPARK FRIENDS.

DID IT RAISE OR DID IT RAISE??????

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

This morning I made the dough for sour dough rolls. I am making 3 pans of rolls for Hubby to take to hunt camp next week. I usually make 9 pans of rolls, but someone else is making them this year too. Our temp today was in the low 40's, so I put the dough in the sun room to rise because it is warmer in there. As long as I don't let the sun shine on it, it is okay. Well, Hubby and I have been cleaning most of the day and guess who forgot about the rising dough. I should have made the rolls around 2:00 pm and I remembered it at 5:30.....the dough had overflowed the bowl. They sure will be "light" since the dough rose so much. I have now made the rolls and am waiting until they rise again so I can bake them.

Outside My Sunroom Window

Monday, October 01, 2012

When we moved here a year and a half ago, we had no idea of some of the things we would see here. There is a little private airport just across from us. We can see the Blue Ridge Mountains from 3 sides of our home. Our deck is on the sunroom end of the house. We can sit in the sunroom, on the front porch, or on the deck and watch this powerful little red and white plane pull up gliders. They usually do this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday's. It is very enjoyable to watch. You can tell when the little plane lets go, because he really revs his engine and head back to the airport. When the glider comes back in, it is a beautiful sight. They can turn in a very short space. There are 3 gliders that are used most often, but others do come also. They have signs on the main streets for glider rides....only one person and the pilot (who sits behind the passenger) can go at a time. WE were going to give a glider ride to our granddaughter until she found "Mama" couldn't go with her. Maybe next year..........

This second picture shows how beautiful the view is of the sky and mountains.

Very pretty! Joe would love to see that, he is really into planes.
We are always amazed at the sites we see out here. Usually once a week military jets fly over head and practice maneuvers nearby at Greenland Gap.

Our visit to Humpback Rock on the Blue Ridge Parkway

Sunday, September 30, 2012

Today Hubby and I took a little drive up the Blue Ridge Parkway. We stopped at Humpback Rocks. It was a farm dated back to the 1800's. There was a spring house where veggies and other items were kept to stay cold. Places for gardens, pens for razorback hogs and they were made to be bear proof, barns for animals, bee hives, cow shed. There was an old farm house that had a lady quilting. I couldn't do too much walkig even though I had my walking stick. It just hurt my leg too much. Hope the doctor can see me tomorrow when I go with Hubby.
