My Thanksgiving cactus is confused

Wednesday, February 08, 2012

I noticed a couple of blooms on my Thanksgiving cactus a couple of weeks ago. When I went to move it to a different location and water it this morning, this is what I found.

That's beautiful. I'm already seeing azaleas and dogwoods blooming on my street. This is the warmest winter we have had in a long time.

My son invited a few friends over. He's getting Little Caesar's pizza. I'll have veggies and fat-free ranch dip as well. I'll have a slice of pizza and veggies.

Decision made.......We decided to make chili......As I said, we have friends traveling and they are on a stopover tonight. I am also making a chicken/broccoli ring. You put chicken, onion, dijon mustard, parsley, lemon juice, broccoli and mix all together. You use crescent rolls and lay out on pizza pan like a star with a hole in center. Put the mixture on the rolls and pull the tips of the rolls toward the middle hole and tuck under to make a ring when it is done. Bake......yummy. I took applesauce cake out of the freezer to thaw.

We are going to a friend's house for the Super Bowl. We'll have dinner there and they are serving chili which is better than pizza or brats. I plan to have one plate of snacks and to skip dessert. Since I will have a soda, that's my dessert.

Have fun with your friends!!

Guacamole...yes a little high in fat, but it is the good fat, and I don't eat a lot of it. Low-fat poppers, pizza (not sure if I'll have any), veggies with salsa, baked wings and salad. I was very careful about planning the menu for the Superbowl!...and my mom agreed!

Electric Pressure Cooker

Tuesday, January 10, 2012

For our anniversary, we got from daughter and son-in-law an electric pressure cooker. I haven't used a pressure cooker in years and when I did (back in the 60's) it was used on top of the stove. I loved it and used it a lot. I was a little hesitant in case it jiggled too much and exploded. That happened in home ec class in high school. On this electric one, you just set the pressure and time and it does everything on its own. Well, let me tell you, this one is really a wonderful appliance. Yesterday I made honey/garlic chicken in it and it was so fast and so good. I cooked 4 pieces of chicken in 7 minutes. I browned the chicken in it as directed, put the honey, garlic, and soy sauce on it and put the top on and set the timer. This electric cooker is so easy. This would be a good investment for someone who doesn't have much time to cook after coming home from a busy day at work. It also seems it would save on energy because you wouldn't be heating the stove up and cooking for long periods of time especially in the summer when the a/c is being used. It says it will cook a meatloaf in 15 minutes. I am getting ready to look over the book to see what I will cook next. Thank you Carla and her Hubby.

I grew up watching my grandmother and mother use pressure cookers. I can still remember one disaster when I was about 7 and my mother was cooking turnips on the stove top pressure cooker. It exploded and turnips literally covered the ceilings and walls of our kitchen. HAHA! Alas, I never used one and when I got married, I told my aunt to not give me a pressure cooker (this was the gift she was known to give everyone for a wedding gift). My mother still swears the pressure cooker is an awesome kitchen tool.
Since I decided to start canning, I have used the pressure canner a few times and made it through unscathed. Funny thing though - I won't use it in my kitchen. We hook up the propane tanks to a burner on the back patio and do it outside. LOL
I am all about trying new appliances, so maybe I will face my pressure cooker fears and give this one a try. Besides, your chicken recipe sounds awesome and the fast meal prep time is even better!

Wow, never heard of an electric pressure cooker before. I do love my stove top version when in a hurry though. Especially when I decide last minute to make dried beans. emoticon

Awesome. Didn't know that it came in electric. Mine still sits on the stove. I must check it out since I am usually strapped for time. Conversely I've begun using a crock pot - it cooks while I sleep, but this would make just as much sense for me. Thanks for sharing.

I have a stove top pressure cooker and it exploded one time too. I had to even clean food off the ceiling! What a mess that was!!!! I'm much more careful when I use one. I think I would like the electric one, it sounds much easier and safer too! Thanks for telling us about it. I didn't know they had electric ones.

Thanks for the input. I have looked at electric pressure cookers and wondered if they really did what they claim without the danger of a traditional one. I think this will be an investment that I will make. emoticon emoticon

Master Bath Finally Done

Thursday, January 05, 2012

We have been working on the master bathroom for several months. EVERYTHING has been redone......all brand new, even the potty.....lol.... There was a fiberglass shower with a seat previously and Hubby sawed it in half and took it out. Hubby installed the cabinets and did all of the work except the tile. Our son did the tile and our cabinet maker made the panels around the tub to match the cabinets he made. We have been remodeling this house since we moved in here December a year ago and we are finally DONE. We still need to do the wall treatments, but that is coming soon. The lady behind us is painting a picture to go on the tub wall.

Shower tile with leg stand for shaving legs:

Shower with curtain:

Bath wall unit with sinks:

Jacuzzi tub with panels to match cabinets:
