The Joke is on Me

Friday, November 25, 2011

Well, yesterday was Thanksgiving (I know you know that) and we had a nice dinner. However, we are having our true Thanksgiving dinner on Saturday after all of the other "kids" get here. Last night we had ham (I fixed Mom chicken), a buttercup squash dish that Carla made, homemade sourdough rolls, cooked carrots. Seemed like a little bit of food for a "big" meal. Everything tasted good and we got full. We were sitting here after dishes were done and we had taken Mom back to the nursing facility and Hubby said, "Why is the oven still on, is something in it"? Went into the kitchen and looked and there was our potato casserole that I had forgotten to get out of the oven for dinner...it had been in the oven almost 3 hours......lol..lol... Well, I had Carla taste it and it was fine. I think what saved it was it was wrapped in foil and didn't even burn. GUESS what we are having with our tilapia tonight??????

I am still laughing at your blog. It seems like something always happens in the kitchen on a holiday. lol In our house, it wouldn't be a holiday meal without the smoke detectors going wild. Enjoy the potato dish with your tilapia. emoticon

I did something similar. We had turkey, but I also made sarmas (cabbage rolls) and forgot about them until almost everyone had eaten their fill. They were fine, but I have a lot more of them left over than I thought!

Early Thanksgiving Day Celebration

Thursday, November 17, 2011

Today was the Thanksgiving Day celebration at the nursing facility where Mom is living. She has adjusted very well and seems to really like it there. Of course, she would like better to be in her own apartment still, but I am proud of her for how she is doing since she knows she has to be where she can have 24/7 care. Dinner was to be at 5:00 and I went at noon today to help get everything set up. We had dinner in the "fine dining" room. We had to take off all of the table cloths, scrub down the tables, and then put all clean tablecloths on, placements, and then decorate the tables. It was really very nice. Dinner for guests was only $3.00 and bring a side dish. We set over 110 table settings. We had 3 long tables using both sides of the table for the dishes brought by guest. There was so much food. Mom enjoyed her dinner very much and was happy Hubby and I were there with her. The residents are able to eat in the "fine dining" room every day. It really is like eating at a restaurant because they take their orders for dinner and beverages. They do not put any soda cans or milk cartons on the tables.....they drink from stemmed glasses. The only ones that don't eat there are residents with special needs. We had a very nice dinner and was blessed to be there with so many fine people.

Sad Day

Wednesday, November 09, 2011

Monday and Tuesday my friend and I were at Mom's apartment getting it emptied out and packed. Mom had a fall in February and had been living with Hubby and me from then until middle August. She insisted on having her own place and we got her an apartment close my. Then she had a fall in September (her 4th fall) and broke her pelvis bone in 2 places. She had only been in her new apartment for 3 weeks when she had the fall. She has been in rehab ever since and is doing well in recovery. She is at such a high risk of falling that she can't live alone any longer. It has been decided she must have 24/7 care and she will be living at the nursing facility where she has done rehab. I am so happy that she is only 5 minutes from me and I can visit her everyday and take things to her. It is so sad to pack up her things that she cherishes so much. She loves her "what nots" and I have kept all of them. I can leave them for several weeks on her shelves and then take different ones to rotate them so she will still be able to enjoy them. I was having a really hard time doing all of this and my daughter Carla (PINKNFITCARLA) called me and said her son (my #1 grandson) had been in an auto accident and was on his way to the hospital. I just couldn't take any more and I had a melt down. Thankfully he is okay and wasn't seriously hurt. His car didn't fare so well because it will be considered totaled. Thank goodness the lady that hit him has insurance and it will cover the costs, but he will have to purchase another car. Most important of all is that he is okay. I am feeling better this morning, but will be returning to Mom's to get some more things done. My friend and hubby are going today and then my friend will be going home. She has been my friend since grade school and we are very close. I am so fortunate to have such good friends and family and my spark family. I always look for the positive in everything and I know things could be a whole lot worse so I am thankful. Nancy

Sending hugs and prayers to you and your family! So glad to hear that your grandson is OK. I'm sure it's emotional for all of you with the transition with your mother to a nursing facility.

My mom fell in October and has a crack in her pelvis bone too. I have been living at her house to take care of her the last few weeks. She also broke her wrist in 2 places and had surgery to put in a metal plate. It wasn't easy being a caregiver, but I was glad I could take time off from work to help.

Hope you can take some time for yourself to relax. Hang in there!
Hugs!

Wow - that is a lot for anyone's plate. I'm so glad you have family and hubby to support you through this. It's for the best for your mom but how difficult a transition period. Stirs up all kinds of feelings about who they are and the role they have played in your life and all of that is changing. Not looking forward to that day for me but I know it is coming. Hugs and prayers!

So many things piling up at once...meltdown appropriate.
It's really good that the rehab/nursing home is so close to you! I hope your mom's recovery continues to improve. It makes us appreciate every day.
So sorry to hear about your GS's accident and happy he was not seriously hurt! A woman rear ended me a couple of years ago and totalled my car, but I had no serious injuries (even though I DO miss that car). A lot of times there are aches and pains that turn up within two weeks after the event from the force of the collision, so he needs to take it easy for a while and watch for any additional symptoms.
Here's hoping the rest of the year is filled with better news!
Take time for yourself and be grateful for the things you can do.

I know its hard for you that your Mom can't live in her own place anymore, but its great that you live nearby and are able to visit her daily. What a great idea to bring her some of her treasures and then switch them out after a few weeks. You are a good daughter and may God bless you for that!

We have been through having to admit someone into a nursing home and it is hard, but they are watched and taken care of. It is hard to go through their things and try to figure out what to bring into their room, but like you say, you can always switch them out. Glad to hear that your grandson is OK. Cars can be replaced. Stay strong and think on the good things in your life.
