Mom in Rehab

Saturday, September 24, 2011

As most of you know, Mom (86 years old) fell and broke her pelvis bone (in 2 places) last Saturday morning in her apartment. She was in the hospital until Tuesday when she was sent to rehab. The rehab is only 4 miles from our home and I go there 2-3 times a day. I am so thankful it is close so that I can go often. She has been living with us for the past 6 months (because of a fall at that time) but just insisted on getting back her independence. Her home, before here with us in February, is 2.5 hours away so all of her friends are there. Not many people will be able to get to visit her. She is eating well, and doing the therapy as they ask her to do. She got into a whirlpool yesterday and just loved it......that was a first for her. She isn't allowed to get up on her own, but she sometimes does because she forgets. My daughter Carla (PINKNFITCARLA) is here this weekend for my birthday on Monday and to spend some time with Mom. I am so glad she is here. We are printing pictures and going to take her some frames for her walls tomorrow to hopefully make her not feel so alone. We were there for her dinner today and took this photo when she had finished eating.

My mom is 82 and went thru the same thing a few months ago when she fell and broke her shoulder and had to have it replaced. She stayed with me for 4 weeks but insisted on going home and is doing good now. We are lucky to still have our mom with us

Tuesday Update on Mom

Tuesday, September 20, 2011

Got a call from the hospital early Monday morning saying that Mom was being discharged Tuesday and what facility did I want her to go for rehab. Well, I was completely at a loss.....we only moved here in December and you know I wouldn't have even thought of checking out any rehab centers.....didn't even consider needing one. The case manager suggested a few and then I called my neighbor to see if she knew anything about any of those. She said one of them was the best rehab around here and it is very nice, clean, well-managed and a very good reputation. We immediately got in the car and went there. I was amazed how nice it was and very happy that we had that one as a choice. The facility has a craft room, aviary, tv room, porch areas for patients to sit. I hurried over to the hospital and told the person in charge, which one we had chosen. She got on the computer and said she had sent a request to 3 places and the one we chose had answered yes. We right away sent a confirmation that we wanted Mom to go there. Today Mom will be moved so she will be able to start her rehabilitation which will probably last 6-8 weeks. All of the paper work was done for us and I had a great weight lifted from my shoulders. The good thing is, it is only 5 minutes away from our home. We can just run over there everyday or even several times a day so she will have some company. She came to stay with us in February after a fall she had. All of her friends are where she had lived all of her life which is 2 1/2 hrs away...That part is sad. She did make several friends here at the senior center but most of them have no transportation. My next-door neighbor really likes Mom and went to visit her in the hospital, so I am sure she will visit her in rehab too. I know it will be lonely for her, but I at least can go really often to visit. Please keep her in your prayers that she will have a speedy recovery.

Picture taken exactly one week before Mom's fall. In the picture is Mom (great-great Grandma), Aaron (Daddy) and 5th gneration-Levi

This is a beautiful picture. I am so glad we made it work last week to get the picture!

It sounds like the rehab place is nice from all you've said. I will see it this weekend since I'm 99% sure we are coming up. Well, me anyway. Not sure about Meghan with her new job. She won't get her schedule for Sunday until Saturday afternoon :-(

I'm so glad you were so lucky with locating a rehab facility so quickly and it sounds like a good one - I know how stressful that is (went through that with my Mom about a year ago).

Getting her into the rehab place certainly seemed to go smoothly. I hope the same for your mom's recovery. How wonderful that it too is close (just like the hospital was) and I am sure your mom will make many friends there.

Update on Mom

Monday, September 19, 2011

First, I want to thank everyone for all of the well wishes, prayers, spark goodies and comforting words to me and my family regarding Mom. Yesterday, when we went to visit, she was complaining of shoulder pain and they did come and take an x-ray. I didn't hear anything so I am guessing nothing was broken there. I will check when I go visit this morning. When hubby and I got there yesterday she was eating breakfast and seemed in good spirits. Hubby is so good with Mom and can almost always make her laugh. The physical therapist came in and decided since she was having the shoulder pain, she would not give any therapy until that issue was addressed. The therapist just talked with her. Mom's appetite is healthy so hopefully this will strengthen her. As of right now, I don't know the whole game plan......but I should be talking with the doctor today. Not much happens in hospitals on weekends. Later in the afternoon, my neighbor and I both went to visit Mom and again she was doing pretty well . Her favorite thing for food is a strawberry milkshake so we stopped on the way to get one for her and she was really happy about that. Mom is 86 years old and I know we have a long road ahead of us with the broken pelvis trying to heal. She did not have to have surgery (thank goodness). If anything is good in all of this, the hospital is only 5 minutes from my home, so I can just pop in there very easily. Again, thanks for all of the support you have extended to me and my family because it is greatly appreciated. emoticon to everyone....

Gift for Our 5 Generations

Thursday, September 15, 2011

My really good friend in North Carolina sent me a photo frame with a picture of our 5 generations. I had no clue she was sending anything. The frame is very unique to me as I have never seen anything like it before . I haven't had a chance to talk to her since he was born (he will be 2 weeks tomorrow). We have dialed each other to talk on several occasions, but we keep missing each other. emoticon Char for such a wonderful gift.

That is so great. Before my mom passed away ten years ago we had some pictures taken of the five generations with two of my grandkids and their little ones. If I hang in there another 6 to 8 years, I may have that again with me being in the 'oldest' spot.
Levi is a sweetie and I am so glad you got to see him finally.
